How Corporates can get involved with Project Happy Feet Slipper RaceProject Happy Feet
Project Happy Feet Slipper Race is a non-competitive 3-5km walk in slippers (flip flops) to fundraise for education and training programmes benefiting underprivileged children and youths, especially those in developing countries. Conceptualised by Singaporean non-profit organisation Project Happy Feet, the event is run entirely by volunteers so that 100% of registration fees, donations, and spillover sponsorship cash can be channeled directly to pre-identified programmes. The inaugural PHFSR was held on 13 Novemeber 2011. Today, the race has gone beyond Singapore, to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Cebu Mactan Island in the Philippines. The event has raised in excess of SGD400,000, benefitting underprivileged children in Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Philippines. Project Happy FEet Slipper Race is able to go the distance because of corporate partners and sponsors. In this deck, Project Happy Feet hopes to share how corporate partners have helped in the past PHFSR, and recommends ways for corporate organisations to get involved through sponsorship in cash or in kind, supporting through extending networks, volunteering and participating in the event itself. Vietnam has one of the highest education rates in the region from primary to secondary school, but faces a cultural divide in post-secondary education between wealthy and well connected families, and those with neither. While wealthy families’ connections in business provide a means of employment for their children, students without means need to cut through the noise of the competition through extraordinary effort in academia. The goal of this initiative is to give students the financial stability to obtain post-secondary education and open doors to careers that change the trajectory of their families for generations to come. Without support, these students have little chance of increasing their financial standing in the community.
Students who receive ICO Vietnam Education Initiative’s scholarships will also have access to safe housing, practical life skills & emotional support, and opportunities to connect with peers, volunteers, and mentors within and outside of Vietnam.
Although our priority is to provide academic support, we believe in a holistic approach to education. We believe in nurturing compassionate, responsible, caring world citizens. Your donations and sponsorships will assist students with tuition, school supplies, gifts and awards, tutoring, field trips, leadership camps, and so much more.

2. The Context
A shortage of schools and classrooms, particularly in rural areas, limit the
number of children who have access to basic education. Although most of
Cambodian villages have a primary school, many school are still
incomplete. Getting to a school, children have to travel far distances from
their home.
2
In Cambodia, many children still have limited to no access to basic
education, and other many children gave up their basic school
level because of the poverty and migration of their family.
Poverty forces children to forgo school to support their families' most basic
needs. Some families cannot afford the opportunity cost of sending their
children to school. The time that their children would spend in class
translates to lost time that the children could be contributing to the family
income. Common work for Cambodian children includes fieldwork, tending
to cows, collecting recyclables, begging, fishing, and construction work.
Low compensation forces teachers to collect informal school fees from
students creating a barrier to education for poor children. Primary school
teachers get insufficient salaries, putting them hard to live. To supplement
their salaries, teachers collect informal school fees from students. So that,
it is barrier for poor families to send their children to school.
3. 3
