2. There is a low student/professor ratio, so students get lots of
help. Also, many of the students are first generation students
(they are the first one in their family to attend college) and over
80% receive money to help them with their tuition and books.
So the university is very helpful.
Where is ASU?
4. Mascot: Dominic the Rambouillet Ram
• Dominic stands as a proud symbol of Angelo State University.
• The Rambouillet are compact, white-wooled sheep that have
long, curving horns.
• The ram is a great symbol for ASU because San Angelo has
long been the center of the Texas wool and mohair industry.
• Today Dominic attends ASU activities, ranging from the
Official Ring Ceremony to outdoor athletic events. During
football games, Dominic stands on the sidelines.
5. Roscoe and Bella Ram
Roscoe is the crown—some might say clown—
prince of Angelo State University while Bella is
the princess. Seen at most sports events and
many community activities, Roscoe and Bella
lead cheers, hand out candy to children and
greet students when they arrive on campus.
6. Hand Signal – Ram’s Head
• The sign is made by bending the middle and
ring fingers down over the palm and covering
them with the thumb. The extended index and
pinky fingers are then bent halfway to
represent the curve of the horns.
7. Ram’s Head
• The Ram’s Head is also in the University’s
logo. The horn of the Ram rises out of
the “U” in “ASU” and sweeps back
around the “S.”
• When used without the “A” and the “S,”
the Ram’s Head is still seen on the “U”!
• The football helmets also have horns.
8. Gum Tree
• Angelo State University’s “gum tree” stands as one of the stickiest
traditions anywhere!
• The gum tree is speckled with thousands of pieces of used chewing
gum plastered to its split trunk and limbs.
• Legend has it that a student placed his gum on the tree before asking
his girlfriend to marry him. When she said yes, the happy young man
said the tree gave him luck. Since then, hundreds of students have left
their chewing gum on the mesquite to bring them good luck on tests
and in life.
