Canopic jars were used in ancient Egypt to store and protect the organs removed from mummified kings and queens, with each jar guarded by a god with the head of an animal and holding a different organ - Qebehsenuf with a falcon head held the intestines, Hapy with a baboon head held the lungs, and Duamatef with a jackal head held the stomach, and the four jars were placed together in a chest that was buried in the tomb with the mummy.
