An Overview of Disruptive Technologies in Learning &Development

Disruptive technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and big data are rapidly finding their ways in the Learning and Development (L&D)space. Is L&D ready for the perpetual permutation of technology, and the ability to apply that to learning and performance support? In this workshop, we will explore the types of disruptive technologies that are transforming L&D, some practical applications from intelligent chatbot coaching to adaptive learning management systems (LMS) and empathy training using VR goggles. Case studies and best practices will be discussed.

- Put together by Richard Watson at Imperial College London 100 emerging technologies ranked by both time and disruptive potential
- I want to talk about three emerging technologies and their applications in e-learning
- Content curation/Recommender systems - the ability to suggest learning content to learners based on a number of attributes. Adaptive learning/personalized paths - adaptive can be at multiple levels, most commonly used at a course level for content in a learning path. Usually use test scores, learner’s interaction with previous content, demographic information, prior knowledge and experience level, and a number of other attributes. Some do behavior modeling and content analysis
- Branded as learning experience platform (LEP) Netflix meets Spotify Curated content from various sources such as Harvard Business Review, Forbe Magazine, etc. A library of over 9000 items curated – over a 100 Learn List – curated path for a certain skill Recommend some content based on the area of interest or what you said you are interested in improving in Include some of the algorithm a choice to see if the end users want to add in more rules

- Predictive analytics in the form of ‘people analytics’ empower HR to make more informed business decisions Predictive analytics The attempt to forecast what could happen in the future based on what has happened in the past. Analysis and monitoring Gathering data related to why events have happened and what is happening now. Reporting Outlining what has happened in a clear way that can be used for comparison in the future.
- Predict and present the most relevant content to learners by automatically creating personal learning paths. Identify at risk learners by predicting learners’ final grades for a course. Visual dashboard with Risk Quadrants. Give instructors more actionable insights.
- The indicators are normally around frequency of log in, duration of log in, grades, engagement in discussion, etc. Do not measure quality of interaction
- More than a million headsets were shipped at Q3 2017(https://www.canalys.com/newsroom/media-alert-virtual-reality-headset-shipments-top-1-million-first-time) Mostly driven by gaming and entertainment culture Main applications: medical education, healthcare, manufacturing, architecture, geography, geology Growing interest in empathy training
- Vancouver is one of the largest VR hubs in the world with over 200 companies (compare to 15 three years ago).
- First time the E-learning Guild put on a VR/AR and other alternate reality technologies for learning conference called Realities360. Still early days in terms of development and application in learning
- Soft skills training courses - public speaking, business networking, presentations, job interviews, etc. Combination of online tutorials + VR videos and practices - you can record your presentation and it provides a voice analysis for your recording.
- An app where an apprentice can point the camera at any machine in the industry and it is instantly recognised by the AI without need for tags or QR codes. The app overlays the camera’s live feed with augmented reality buttons where the learner can recap on a machine, watch more training, and double check safety elements. This is being used in environments where the trainer is looking after 10 people at a time. So by using the app a learner does not have to wait for the instructor to become available. It also allows self-lead learning.
