LTE uses the Mobility Management Entity (MME) to handle mobility management differently than 3G networks. The MME is responsible for mobility management and is connected to evolved Node Bs (cells) that are grouped into Tracking Areas (TAs), which are further grouped into TA Lists (TALs). When a User Equipment (UE) moves out of its current TAL, it reports its new location to the MME. This paper investigates the performance of LTE paging, where the MME pages cells, TAs, or TALs to locate a UE, and provides guidelines for the best paging sequence.
