Amelia Earhart was one of the greatest female pilots who set numerous records as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and between the United States coasts. She embarked on a flight around the world in 1937 but disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Despite an extensive search costing $4 million, her plane was never found and the circumstances of her disappearance remain unknown.

12. The Unknown She left California on May 21,1937 "I have a feeling that there is just about one more good flight left in my system and I hope this trip is it. Anyway when I have finished this job, I mean to give up long-distance "stunt" flying."

13. The Crash It has been determined that the plane went down some 35-100 miles off the coast of Howland Island. A life raft was stowed on board but no trace has ever been found the raft.

15. Search and Rescue President Roosevelt authorized a search of 9 naval ships and 66 aircraft at an estimated cost of over $4 million. On July 18 the search was abandoned by ships in the Howland area.
