Achieving Measurable Collective Impact with Results-Based Accountability - Common Agenda
Partners from local, state and national initiatives are working together to understand how to meet the conditions of collective impact. Organizations often seek like-minded partners in order to reach common goals. Partnerships are formed. Meetings are held. But to what end? Stakeholders are convened from numerous programs aimed at support community well-being. These partnerships often find themselves continuing to focus on the outcomes for individuals, rather than on the collective impact of aligned partners throughout the community. Over time, meeting attendance falls and partners end up falling short of measurable results. What causes these well-intentioned efforts to flounder?
This workshop series will detail how partners and stakeholders can understand and implement the five conditions of collective impact by implementing the RBA framework. Each webinar will focus on a specific condition, allowing participants to have a deeper understanding of what it takes to practically apply RBA to meet that condition. The series will also include case studies that illustrate how partner organizations can align their efforts to achieve measurable community results with sustainable change. Whether they are caring for children, elderly or disabled relatives, our research has found how stressful and challenging caring for dependents can be. So much so that many carers want to reduce their hours of work or leave their companies as a result of the conflict of demands. We know that different types of carers face different issues and therefore require different support mechanisms from their colleagues, line managers and employers. Not only is getting this right crucial for their wellbeing but it is also fundamental to business success in terms of retaining talented people in the organisation.
This workshop is designed to help organisations understand the key barriers that currently exist in the workplace for carers and how to use hacking to make small changes to the way you work in order to be far more inclusive of parents and carers alike.

Jonathan has smoked one pack of cigarettes every day for the past 30 years and is 20 pounds overweight. He works in a local plastics manufacturing plant and has a physically demanding job. Alexis enjoys working in her garden and cooking a variety of vegetable-rich meals. Joanne exercises regularly but does have asthma, for which she uses an inhaler when needed.
The community where Jonathan, Alexis, and Joanne live has extensive walking and biking paths. Joanne makes full use of the paths and bikes on them at least once every week. The community has recently instituted a wellness clinic about three blocks away from Jonathan and Alexis’ house.
Although the plastics plant pollutes the river, the company plans to install water and air pollution control measures in about 3 years. The plant is currently implementing purification measures for the river.

2. Are the members of the Davis family healthy, according to the WHO definition? Your definition?
3. Are they living in a healthy community? Please explain.

Absenteeism costs the Canadian economy $16 billion annually according to a 2013 report. However, less than half of Canadian employers track absences and even fewer measure the impact on their bottom line. Sun Life has an Organizational Health Consultant (OHC) team that provides strategic guidance and expertise to help clients identify risks and develop strategies to improve organizational health and reduce absenteeism. The OHCs have industry expertise in disability and absence management and help clients assess needs, identify areas for improvement, and recommend programs and policies to decrease absences and costs. This document summarizes key issues facing hospitals as the healthcare industry consolidates. Large integrated regional health systems will dominate as payment shifts from volume to value. Community hospitals must determine whether to remain independent or affiliate through acquisition or merger. The first step is an objective analysis of strengths, weaknesses, and market position. Scenario planning is also essential to contemplate potential paths. Cultural fit is important for successful consolidation deals. Engaging local stakeholders can help independent hospitals remain viable in their communities.
Effective Small Business Wellness (workshop)
This workshop is designed to create collaborative problem solving for participants around a hypothetical scenario (See Part 4) to create a small business wellness initiative in the community.
Participants are assigned to tables for diversity of composition (employees, employers, providers, insurers, non-profits).
The room also has experts from the community available for consultation.
The goal is to identify key elements and strategy needed to launch an effective community-based wellness initiative that supports small businesses.
This full-day workshop was conducted at the Houston Wellness Association in January of 2010 with about 30 participants

Data show conclusively that the health status of a company's employees is directly correlated to the profitibility and competitiveness of the company. This is not an American challenge, but a global challenge and responsibility. This was a keynote address to a dozen major US corporations in May, 2008. I'm happy to discuss with anyone of interest.

The National Organization on Disability (NOD) aims to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities. NOD conducts research and demonstration projects working directly with employers. Through its Bridges to Business initiative, NOD helps connect employers, service providers, and agencies to build a more inclusive workforce. NOD conducted a study interviewing 40 organizations to identify themes in disability employment. The study found that employers want assistance from a broad organization to serve as an advisor connecting them to local service providers. NOD works to help employers and providers use consistent metrics to measure job performance, retention, and career progression of employees with disabilities.
