Joy Porter taught American and World History at Allendale-Fairfax High School for the 2005-2006 school year. To prepare, she attended conferences on managing student behavior, writing essays, and instructing to state standards. She also completed the district's induction course, growing in areas like classroom management and unit planning. While her first year was challenging, she learned and intends to apply those lessons. The superintendent recommends her highly and believes she will succeed in any subject or district.

Dear Madam or Sir:
As superintendent of Allendale County Schools, I am pleased to recommend Joy Porter
for a teaching position and write this letter on her behalf. Joy taught American and
World History at Allendale-Fairfax High School for the 2005-2006 school year. Joy was
recruited from Michigan for the opportunity to teach in South Carolina in a school where
most of the children are living on or below the poverty level.
To prepare for her teaching assignment, Ms. Porter attended a conference hosted by
Edison Schools in Atlanta, GA. There she learned more about managing student
behavior, teaching students who to write essays and instructing according to South
Carolina's state standards. She also passed the Allendale County's Teacher Induction
Course where she was able to grow in the areas of cooperative learning, classroom
management, and putting together effective unit plans. In addition to these activities, she
also attended professional development meetings throughout the year. Through these
meetings she incorporated her lesson plans in accordancewith her students' results on the
RIT reading and MAP language usage tests.
Although Ms. Porter had a challenging first year at Allendale, she shared with me that
she had grown as an educator. She intends to use what she learned to her next teaching
assignment to help her become a more effective teacher.
Joy plans to also pursue her master's degree in special education. I think she will make a
great special education teacher as well as social studies teacher. I am confidant that Joy
will be successful in her next district no matter what subject she is teaching.
I appreciate all the hard work Joy had put into teaching our students. She will be missed
dearly by me as well as the staff at our high school. I wish the best of luck to her.
Paula Harris, Superintendant
