1.Introduction
In Nathan’s My Freshman Year (2005), she was involved in a university community again as a freshman to know the difference between International and American students. She finished her research as a participant observer which means the researcher who is both insider and outsider during the cultural studies. Nathan did everything as an “observation-participant” to study the college life and students. She studied like a real freshman and lived in the dormitory. However, she is a middle-aged woman who has the different experience and generation from freshman. She is not “native”to the culture.
Since I am an international student, I always feel so different when I came to UCSC community. The cultural , life habit, study environment, everything are so fresh and challenging for international students to involve in. When I firstly came in College 9, I felt that everything is so international and corresponds to the theme of College 9 ---“International and Global Issues”. During International orientation, I met and made friends with so many Chinese students. Between our conversation, I found that most of us confused in the new environment. The communication is the most serious problem and it is difficult for us to involve the community. Chinese students lose their confidence easily because the native languages between Chinese and English have totally different background and logic. The general trouble is hard to communicate with others, which makes students become more silent and reticent. People can improve their ability of language by interacting with American students. However, most of Chinese students are willing to stay with Chinese friends. Students are too shy to interact with Americans, so they have no chance to improve our language. Also, some Chinese students don’t care about involving with American community and just hang out with Chinese. Moreover, in the class, Chinese students should have a long time to adapt with the new circumstance because of the language, the culture, the teaching style and the thinking model. According to these findings and feelings, my research question is : “How can Chinese students become more involved in college life?”
2. Research design and methodology
In order to answer the Research Questions, I decide to do the interview with Chinese and American students to collect the specific data. Since I am a Chinese student, I am both an “insider” and an “outsider” during my research. Because as a Chinese student, I can feel the true confused emotion and challenging which most of Chinese students face now. Also, as an interviewer, I must interview the Chinese and American at the same time objectively.
2.1 Research context
UCSC is a public university with more than 10 thousand students and one of 10 campus in the University of California system. A campus with world-class facilities and one of the most visually s.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS COUNSELING
RECOMMENDATION FOR C~~RLES F. CHELEDEN, CLASS OF 1986
When asked for the first words that came to mind to describe Chad,
his teachers used "cheerful, sincere, quiet, intelligent, dependable,
attentive, hard-working, observant, thorough, and friendly." In the categories
of evaluation for which colleges seek information, they rate him soundly
"excellent" in all categories.
Chad's sophomore and senior A.P. English teacher says that "I have found
him to be unfailingly pleasant and friendly to work with. Chad is a hard-workin,~;
serious student. He is currently holding a B average in the A.P. course and
seems to thrive on the spur which others, who may be a bit sm~rter than he,
provide for him. He is u student who is willing to listen to and to profit
from the instructions and comments of his teacher. Chad will do very well at
a solid, challenging college. His genuine cheerfulness and outgoing manner
will make him a success, coupled as they are with a great deal of determination
and willingness to work ;-'d.:cd."
In Chad's 4th year of Classics study, his teacher, the chairperson of
the department writes that "Chad reveals an alert and attentive mannerism
which generates for him quick comprehension of the subject matter and generally
good grades. He seems to me to possess good analytical skills and well developed
verbal sk~lls evide~~ed in sharp questions and wel~ phrased responses rendered
in both written and spoken forms. It is my impression that Chad is well
organized and efficient and, therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending
him for a good college."
The junior year American Government teacher under-scores that: "when
Chad speaks, all listen; however, in my class. I find him more of a good listener
than a frequent questioner. He seems always willing to go the extra mile
in class and did except, ional work for me."
The chairman of the History department, and currently Chad's teacher in
American History notes that "Chad is a fine student. His preparation for
each class in thorough and he thinks and reads critically and possesses a
deep fund of knowledge. He is a demanding questioner and writes adequate prose.
Chad seems to be intellectually curious about everything. His motivation is
beyond question. Every summer he has taken courses in the summer school. He is
an independent thinker whose seriousness of purpose makes him an ideal college
candidate."
2. Other teachers say of Chad that he "is always attentive; shows consideration
for others; prepares well for daily work; participates in discussion; is a
pleasant stud(~nt to teach; works th0!;:oughl~1i.n cla.~s;3.nc.pGSS~~SSCS gool stud.!'
skills." Almost at the end of his first semester senior year, Chad is maintaining
a 3.1 average in our demanding college prep environment and his teacher comments
in all his courses are very positive.
Chad has had very interesting and educational work experience in banking
and real estate which has occupied a good deal of his summer time and has
fashioned some serious career directions for him in that field. At school, besides
his academic work, Chad has been involved in our Championship Crew team as
coxswain and rower and will join the varsity squad this season. He is also
active on the school yearbook; with the Boosters; and in the Photography and
Spanish clubs. He plans to visit Spain on our school trip this coming spring.
Chad also works as a busboy on weekends; and takes an "Infroduction to Business"
course this semester at the bank where he works during the Slli~ers.
Chad is also a musician, playing the trombone, flute. guitar; and for
many years, the piano.
Chad is a quiet thinker, mature and likeable. He is an individual who
has proven abilities as a student and interesting and significant experiences
beyond school work. with confidence in his history at the Prep, he has our strong
recommendation for the education and develop~ent of his fine abilities that lies
ahead.
