Allen Chastanet outlines his plans for Micoud South which include increasing youth employment by 50% through new jobs, ensuring free healthcare for the elderly and disabled, reopening the St. Jude Hospital, providing land and assistance to farmers, bringing higher education to the south by opening a second campus of SALCC, upgrading sports facilities, and developing a football academy. He believes development is long overdue in the south and will create new economic centers by building a highway and new cruise terminal to connect the region and provide jobs. Chastanet also wants communities to have input in budgeting and prioritizing spending to give them ownership over their development.

BUILDING A NEW
SAINT LUCIA
2. Allen Chastanet is a proven
leader. He has already proven his
leadership skills in the airline and
tourism industries and as
Minister of Tourism. Through his
leadership, the UWP has been
modernised and is now a strong
united force in the present
elections.
“There is no excuse for the plight
of the poor, or the poor living
conditions that an increasing
number of Saint Lucians have to
endure. I am tired of the
mediocre management of our
economy and unhappy with the
inequity that exists in our
society, said Allen. “If I can make
a difference in the private sector,
then I am confident that I can
make a difference in people’s
lives. This is what inspires and
motivates me,” he says
passionately.
“Development of the south is
long overdue,” he says, “we will
create economic centres in
Soufriere and Vieux Fort by
building a new highway to
provide easy access to the north
as well as to connect the new
centres. A new cruise terminal is
planned for Vieux Fort and the
staffing, equipping and opening
of the St. Jude Hospital will be a
priority. These developments will
be a huge source of employment
for people from Micoud South,”
“I also wish to allow communities
to contribute to the budgeting
process by identifying

Government spending that is
most important to them. They
will have an input in deciding
what is a priority in their daily
lives – will it be repairs to schools
this year and road building or do
we wait until next year for a new
playing field or improved
drainage. This sort of input will
give people a real sense of
ownership of their communities
and the country as a whole. The
seventeen members of
Parliament do not possess all the
answers and I think it is
important that we build a
genuine partnership with the
people who elect us to serve
them,” Allen says.
