Private Investing Strategy
INVESTMENT OBJECTIVE
Risk adjusted performance is the focus that guides us. In the equity
portion of a client’s portfolio, we attempt to take less risk than the
S&P 500, while attempting to outperform the S&P 500 over the long
term.
OUR INVESTMENT PROCESS
The portfolio is a “go anywhere” strategy, meaning we may be invested
in equities, fixed income or cash including any market cap or any style,
domestic or international. We utilize a well thought out defined sell
discipline, in addition to a rigorous buy discipline.
We follow our discipline rigorously.
TOP-DOWN METHOD
One-half of the equity portfolio is a
top-down method. Investments in
this portion of the portfolio are
selected first by study of the
macroeconomic picture, quantitative
factors and technical analysis at a
sector level. A weight of the
evidence process is used to select
the sectors for emphasis in this part
of the portfolio. Once the sectors
have been selected quantitative and technical research is employed to identify
the industries of note within the preferred sectors. An effort is made to
identify every publicly traded company within those industries in the “sweet
spot”. Fundamental and technical analyses are used to trim the list down
to about 20 names. If our process does not identify 20 names, we may hold
a portion of the portfolio in cash or add to fixed income, currency or
precious metals Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

BOTTOM-UP METHOD
The other one-half of the equity portfolio is a bottom-up method. More
than 3000 securities are screened for multiple Earnings Per Share (EPS)
revisions higher over a six month time frame. Those companies that pass
the screen are then studied individually using both fundamental and
technical research to bring the list down to about 18 names. Again, if our
process does not identify 18 names, we may hold a portion of the portfolio in
cash or add to fixed income, currency or precious metals ETFs.
STRATEGICALLY CHOSEN,DILIGENTLY CUSTOMIZED
Depending on the client risk tolerance and
goals, the equity portion will differ in
proportion only. In other words, the stocks
owned are strategically chosen in each client
portfolio and is in a proportion that is right-
sized for the client’s needs. For the fixed
income portion of a client’s portfolio,
investments are selected using a rate
anticipator style. Fixed income investments
will be taxable or tax-free depending on
the client’s needs. Typically, investments are
made in individual bond issues or ETFs.

BluChip Dividend Strategy
The BluChip Dividend Strategy seeks to invest in companies with rising
dividends. Typically, the companies are high dividend yielding, high quality
large cap stocks. The yield is high due to the stock being out-of-favor and
therefore cheap on a relative basis. These shares are typically a very good
value.
As the dividends of these stocks
rise, the price often follows. In our
research, we study the guidance
from the company as to how much
they intend to grow the
dividend. Historically, investors can
rely on the guidance given by
company management relating to
the intended growth of dividends.
This is because corporate managers
know that if a company fails to grow
the dividend as much as expected the stock price would suffer. Corporate
management has a vested interest in a strong stock price. So, the
management of the company normally only promises the dividend
increases that they can deliver. That’s very useful in improving the
likelihood of investment success.

Utility Dividend Strategy
The Utility Dividend Strategy seeks high dividend growth from a portfolio of
quality utility stocks. The portfolio may include electric, telephone, gas and
water companies. We look for utility stocks that are paying a high
yield. We get further guidance from the company as to how much they
intend to grow the dividend. Historically, companies are highly accurate
with the predicted growth rate. Naturally, if they inflate the predicted
dividend growth rate, the stock price would suffer. We look for those
companies that have a high growth rate of the dividend. We then study
each stock individually using both fundamental and technical research. We
typically own 10 names in this portfolio when fully invested. The portfolio is
equally weighted.

MLP Strategy
The MLP strategy is looking for high-quality yield. In addition, we are
looking for growth of the distribution rate. Historically, companies are
highly accurate with the predicted growth rate of the
dividend. Naturally, if they inflate the growth rate then under-deliver,
the stock price will suffer. So, they tend to deliver at least the
dividend growth rate projected, if not more. We study each stock
individually using both fundamental and technical research.

PIM Strategy
An ETF portfolio with a goal of cash flow and some growth.
This portfolio utilizes a covered call strategy employing indexes through
ETF’s. A weight of the evidence process is used to select the sectors.
Investments in this strategy are selected first by study of the
macroeconomic picture, then quantitative factors and technical analysis at a
sector level. Index ETF’s are purchased and covered calls are written on
them creating premium income.
The goal of the portfolio is to create greater cash flow than would be
available from a diversified equity portfolio alone. The cash flow generally
comes from dividends and from the premiums the investor receives upon
selling the covered calls. This discipline seeks relatively high premium
income, dividends and moderate appreciation. The portfolio is managed
with the intent of reducing risk to less than the risk of the S&P 500. We may
own stock or bond indexes or a combination. This portfolio is typically fully
or near fully invested.

Fixed Income Strategy
Fixed income investments are selected using a rate anticipator style. Fixed
income investments will be taxable or tax-free depending on the client’s
needs. Typically, investments are made in individual bond issues, ETFs or
mutual funds. We typically invest in investment grade bonds, however at
times high yield bonds may also be in the portfolio.
