How to Predict the
Future
Predicting the future
is hard
Predicting the future is hard

success = f (psychology, technology, economics)
success = f (people, tech, business)
People don’t really change
that much
success = f (psychology, technology, economics)
success = f (people, tech, business)
Anythingthat peoplewant (enough)will eventually
become possible
it’s just a matter of time
We started off by looking at daily problems which
people face :
Daily problems
• Cold house in the morning
• School bag safety
• Loosing things
• Bad grammar
• Missing your alarm clock
• Messy handwriting
• Late homework
• Not eating enough healthy
things
• Phone out of charge
• Power cuts
Many common ideas !
Our company, track ‘a’ scan, is developing smart
technology that will be able to help ordinary
families to track where there food they have
purchased is (such as which cupboard/fridge),
what recipes you are able to make with the
items you have and whom has taken food out
and how much calories have been used, using
the track/scanner kit.
Eventually something along the lines of taking
coffee out of the cupboard and it switches the
kettle on
The technology behind it

Buying back time for pupils and teachers
Our Idea
To connect our doors to the technology
that can help us to intelligently manage
the flow of pupils (at the busiest times) to
improve safety, efficiency, experience –
and buy back time for students and
teachers!
What It Does
• It uses GPS to know where you are, which race
track you are at, and the best racing line for that
track. It projects the line onto the visor. It uses
arrows to show the line: Green for accelerate,
yellow for lift off, red for brake. It also has a
speedometer projected onto the visor as well. The
speed can be changed from KPH to MPH.
Racing Line Helmet
Finally, we came up with the perfect idea!!!
What it is…
• Mirror Gram is designed to be your personal fashion
guider to make your clothes colour co-ordinate – it will
also advertise or suggest another company’s product
e.g. BooHoo.com
• Furthermore, you can also share your outfits online on
different types of social medias.

the Internet of things.
Sensors:
We have a modular sensor
system; adaptable to different
kinds off fish’s needs. Buy

pH:
Keep your fish safe from sudden pH changes. Fish can die
from sudden changes of pH and if you are breeding exotic
fish it is vital that you control the pH of your tank.
Ammonia:
Fish food is converted by the biological processes of the fish and
one on the waste products is ammonia. This is extremely
dangerous to a fish and left untreated a fish will die.
Oxygen:
It is important to know the amount of
dissolved oxygen in your tank. Our
system will inform you when your
aeration device is faulty. If this is left
unchecked, this would be extremely
harmful to the fish.
Temperature:
Our system includes an immersion
heater, this will adjust to you fish’s
needs. For instance, a gold fish spawns
at 20°c.

Fish can die from sudden changes of pH and if you are breeding exotic fish it is vital that you control the pH of your tank. Ammonia: Fish food is converted by the biological processes of the fish and one on the waste products is ammonia. This is extremely dangerous to a fish and left untreated a fish will die. Oxygen: It is important to know the amount of dissolved oxygen in your tank. Our system will inform you when your aeration device is faulty. If this is left unchecked, this would be extremely harmful to the fish. Temperature: Our system includes an immersion heater, this will adjust to you fish’s needs. For instance, a gold fish spawns at 20°c. Pump: Our pump has been designed to safely drain, clean and restock your tank. Save water, save the planet. This component will simultaneously drain and restock your tank so you and your fish won’t even notice the process. Have a clean and sanitary tank with our high tech pump. • 56. Don’t just Predict the Future – Build It !

Editor's Notes

  1. Then overlay with pictures of all the finals from around the country.
  2. Cisco : Obviously But we had a whole host of other companies across the UK. This is just a selection. Who do you recognise ! Mott MacDonald : Engineering Development Consultants European Space Agency ! Aston Martin
  3. So as part of the Little BIG Awards, you’ve had a stab at predicting the future. Trying to foresee which applications will be successful when we connect the unconnected. At Cisco spend a lot of our time worrying about the future and trying to predict what it might mean for internet, the network and hence our business. So I thought I would share some of my thoughts about predicting the future and seeing what it might mean for our lives and perhaps your careers.
  4. The first and most obvious fact about predicting the future is that it is not easy. If it was, then the Little BIG Awards would have been simple and we would all now be millionaires. Lets have a look at just how hard predicting the future has been for some of our most successful business people.
  5. Today Apples iPhone outsells all Windows phones by a significant margin
  6. In fact it you take into account laptops, tablets, phones, smart tvs, microwaves, fridges, etc, there are probably 100 or more things you could class as a computer in the average UK home
  7. Enough to store a less than a second of a HD movie or a few seconds of an music track – and not enough for this presentation
  8. So here’s my equation for predicting the future - success is a function of psychology, technology and economics. What people want and desire, made possible thru technology and made feasible by business. [ order is important ]
  9. But we can make another interesting observation, people don’t really change that much. These two women are separated by several hundred years but if they could meet and talk over a coffee in Starbucks they would find that they actually share a great deal. Apart from the fact that they both like to read – they also both like to look nice by wearing fashionable clothes and make-up. They both want to be healthy and fit, to eat nice food, to be entertained, to listen to music, to do less manual work, to spend time with their friends and families, to find a life partner. This was also true of ladies who lived a thousand years ago and a ladies who will live in a thousand years from now.
  10. People are a fixed part of this equation. In the grand scheme their hopes and desires don’t really change. Its technology that continually changes and makes available new ways to make people happy. Then is business that makes it a possible to do a huge scale.
  11. So if we put the focus on what people want (and have always wanted) and assume that technology marches forward – then we arrive at this Conjecture. Anything… Cures for disease, an end to death from natural causes, xxxxxx
  12. How a fitbit makes money How expensive it is to provide home care ? a Heart rate and temperature wristband which is aimed at elderly people over the age of 60 and above. We decided that we would make an App so that whoever the carer or family member is they can get the app to keep an eye on the person who has a heart problem or needs to have help.
  13. When we started researching fitness apps we soon realised that there weren't any for children. although there are many campaigns trying to solve children obesity none of them were centered around the young people having fun whilst doing them.
  14. One of the ways of preventing cot deaths is to keep the room temperature at an optimum of 14-220C, our product will alert the parent/carer if the temperature is out of this range and if the parents have smart heating our product is programmed to lower or higher the temperature accordingly. If the parents do not they can do it themselves. Babies who die from this are thought to have trouble with how they regulate their heart rate, breathing and temperature; our product will monitor these things.
  15. Our app will include a timer, an alarm, music choices, plaque level monitor and number of brush strokes, frequency of tooth brushing
  16. This stores a variable brush. It records brush strokes and if you do more than 50 strokes you will get a nice message saying ‘Awesome job’ but if you get less than 50 you will get a message saying ‘Try harder tomorrow’
  17. We starting by looking at a smoke alarm. We concluded that within a smoke detector there was a Smoke Alarm sensor accompanied by a battery supply. So, whilst using the Microsoft Block Editor we could change the accompanied device for the microbit to this smoke alarm. Brendon; Using this software, we could put it so that when it senses smoke, several messages come up, and when it doesn’t sense it for a while different messages to come up. Joe; we could also use the website we created to inform you of your friends’ progress via messages, and reward you or shame you of your current progress. Brendon: the app incorporates leader boards, notifications, advisors and a wish list to show you how much money you have saved by not smoking. But how does it work? Joseph: This is the idea we have. (points to picture on the board) inside the band is a smoke detector which will detect the smoke from your cigarette and send the info to your phone noting down that you smoked. The band will be rubber, with a wide range of available colours. You can inter-change the area where the smoke alarm is with different colour bands to get a personalised band, so it will look stylish, and not something you want to take off because it looks clunky. Daniel: The app will also have a wish list. You can input the type of cigarettes you smoke and how often you smoke one, and every day the app will give you notifications on how much money you have saved by not smoking those cigarettes. The app then totals up the amount and shows what you can put it towards. For example, if you didn’t smoke for a week, and you usually smoked one cigarette costing one pound a day, you’d have saved £7. This would be shown on the app (points to board). It would also show how many more days you would need to stop smoking to save enough money to buy the thing you want. For example, a ps4. (point to board showing picture of PS4 with only £293 left to go beneath It with £7 saved beneath that).
  18. To get an idea of what we are doing we put together a PowerPoint which consisted of 200 pictures then we went through it and narrowed it down taking two items from each page and then we decided on a cats eyes (road stub). The few things we thought about making the cats eyes do was: Weather Monitoring The weather monitor could tell you if there was ice/water on the road and contact gritters .etc. We thought it could measure the temperature, see if oil spilled on the road. Traffic tracking We thought the traffic tracker program could count the cars (per hour). It could contact emergency services (Crashes, Fires .etc.)It could give you alternative routes by connecting to the sat nav / GPS. How it could help the environment We thought it could help the environment by measuring the air quality (pollen, help hayfever, cars giving off CO2) It could save power by turning off street lights when there are no cars on the road. We thought about the safety We thought the safety program could have features such as: speed tracking and it could contact police if someone was speeding. Again it could contact the emergency services (accidents, crashes, fires .etc.) We thought we could create an app/ website We thought the app/Website could have a GSP/ Maps to show the quickest routes if there's been an accident. And the construction of the product We thought the construction could include: it being water proof, insulated, heat resistance. We are think about making it sponge so it could absorb water, having it in bright colours/ reflective so drivers can see it in the dark so they don’t run them over. It would obviously be connected to the internet.
  19. SOLAR PANNEL NEW TECHNOLOGY LOCK CANVAS IRON ZIP COLOURS CHANGE TO YOUR DESIRE TIMETABLE SLOT AND SCANNER CONNECTS TO LOADS OF APPLIANCES THE BAG HAS A INBUILT TRACKER TELLS YOU IF ANY OF YOUR SCHOOL BOOKS GO MISSING
  20. The pen is going to record the motion of the writing using a motion sensor. A pressure sensor will detect when a word begins and ends. An app will be used to convert the characters using OCR and another app will provide a spell check dictionary. If a word is spelt wrong, the pen will beep. It will display alternative spellings for the word on the side of the pen and send a message to your phone with the correct spellings. The words can be added to a database on the phone to be used to make a game.
  21. is a stress ball designed to help those who have stressful lives and may be too connected to their devices, to connect to themselves with helpful advice from a pocket-sized Zen master. The stress ball is a sphere you shake. Depending on how much you shake it will give you a percentage of how stressed you are. Also, it measures your heart rate at the same time and has a force sensitive resistor in the stress ball to measure the pressure with the information displayed on a BBC Micro bit. Then you will be given advice via an app on your phone. This will turn on airplane mode to disconnect you with unnecessary notifications, for a set time, to keep you focused on the task at hand.
  22. The reason why we are making this is to help teachers with their pupils E.G. connects to register as soon you walk in the classroom. , two buttons with yes or no so you click yes if you have done the homework or no if you haven’t. , automatically connects to teachers computer or tablet. The a + b button act as a yes/no button – the teacher can use the app to ask the pupils a question witch will appear on the classroom whiteboard same with homework.
  23. Congestion in corridors at lunchtimes Teachers have become ‘traffic control’ No visibility of which students are in the building out of hours Not assistance-animal friendly Overcrowding and confusion at the bus stop
  24. It will help by keeping your eyes on the road by putting the dials in front of the driver’s eyes, not on the steering wheel or on the dashboard. This will eradicate the need to look down, keeping the driver’s eyes on the road.
  25. Our mission is to create something creative and innovative that we think would be different and would benefit the society in the future as they can ask the mirror whether their outfit is in style or if the pieces of clothing they have one match with each other. This would make it easy for the person with the mirror to decide what to wear. If the mirror gives the advice to wear something else instead then this will link onto another website so the person can order their item they've been suggested to wear if they would like. Our main purpose as a company is to bring something completely new into the social media and entertainment sector by connected two completely unconnected things together. Also we aim to make fashio technology more advanced and to make the dream quote Mirror Mirror on the wall, does my outfit match for the ball' come true. We think 16-25 year olds would love the fact the mirror can assist you on what to wear and redirect you to the clothing website we are looking to liase with (Boohoo) Older people would like the overall feature of being able to ask the mirror for fashion advice as they may not be familiar with the idea of new worldwide trends.
  26. Our product is a smart trainer that contains a variety of features which can track, record and monitor your progress and send the information to an app.
  27. The pedometer Measures how many steps you take and sends it to your phone. You can set a goal and you will be notified by lights that flash on the trainer. The pressure mearsure Measures the pressure you force on to your feet when exercising/ running. Can help prevent spinal cord injury. Can also act as a shock-absorber. The pulse recorder Measures your pulse and breathing rate. Can detect whether you are at risk of having an asthma attack. POP~FLIX is activated when you log into your Netflix account. We hope, in the future that POP~FLIX will not be limited to just Netflix but will have connectivity with other online, film and TV download services, for example, Amazon Prime. This means that you can enjoy popcorn whilst watching your favourite film with more ease as you don’t need to leave your comfy sofa-crease. Imagine logging in to your Netflix account from your smartphone as you leave work or school and being greeted by the smell of freshly made popcorn as your enter your home, snuggle on your sofa, put on your PJs and get settled in for an evening of filmtopia...after doing your homework...of course!
