King Alfred the Great, born circa 849 in Wantage, Berkshire, was the son of Aethelwulf and Osburh and is considered the 32nd great-grandfather of Elizabeth II. He ascended to the throne in 871, successfully defended his kingdom against Viking invasions at battles like Ashdown and Edington, and passed away on October 26, 899. Alfred was known for his military reforms, domestic policies including the establishment of fortified towns, and contributions to Anglo-Saxon literature.
