RE: NATO California/Nevada 2013 Scholarship:
Alexia Hungerford (Bullard)
In the time I’ve known Alexia Hungerford, she’s been a quality student
who arrives early to every class, asks insightful questions, and displays
a rare combination in a student of assertive inquisitiveness and genuine
respect both for her teacher and for the class’s subject matter. Last
semester, I was Alexia’s instructor for English 202, part of an advanced
composition sequence that emphasizes critical writing and close analysis
of texts. Alexia’s first paper showed immense promise, scoring a rare
perfect score. I have only given this score a handful of times in the
eighteen years I’ve been teaching. I was impressed especially in her
ability to adapt her personal inhibitions to her advantage by using her
experiences as a prism to view and to wrestle with complex issues. Her
following papers impressed me with her creativity and analytical
sensitivity.
Often in my classes the most difficult task is to come up with an
interesting angle on a literary piece that hasn’t been beaten to death, and
Alexia overcame this with surprising ease. Her communication skills,
both written and spoken, suggest a lively intelligence and keen
observation. Her willingness to learn new writing methods and
techniques in my class also suggests to me that she will apply herself
with maximum effort upon obtaining a scholarship, not resting on her
own knowledge of what worked previously, but instead showing an
enthusiasm for new challenges. I’m confident Alexia will fulfill her
potential in all her future endeavors. I strongly recommend her for the
NATO California/Nevada 2013 scholarship. I can’t think of a more
deserving candidate I’ve mentored in all my years of teaching.
Sincerely,
David Cowper,
English Instructor
