Alcoholism is a chronic disease and worldwide problem where an individual becomes dependent on alcohol and it damages organs like the brain, liver, and heart. It is generally defined as compulsive and uncontrolled consumption of alcohol that detrimentally impacts one's health, relationships, and social standing. Factors that can contribute to alcoholism include poverty, unemployment, peer pressure, and stress, while health issues caused by alcoholism include heart disease, cancer, liver disease, and brain damage. Treatment involves developing self-control, getting support, raising awareness, attending de-addiction centers, counseling, group therapy, and using behavior modification techniques.
