Alban Maria Johannes Berg or known more as Alban
Berg, was a Austrian composer that wrote many
Romanticism pieces in the late 19th- Century.
He was born in Vienna, Austria on February 9th, 1885
and dies on December 24, 1935.
Self- taught composer until he began studying with
Schoenberg in 1904
3. Compositions
Composed orchestral music which included 5
orchestral songs, chamber music, songs, and two
groundbreaking operas
LULU (1928-1935) and WOZZECK (1914-1923)
4. First
Performance
In fall of 1907, Alban Berg performed Piano Sonata
which was later published in 1908 and String Quartet
which was later published in 1910
Both were strongly influenced by young composer’s
musical gods
5. LULU
Composed between 1928-1935
First performed in 1937
Made out of three acts, however Berg died before
completing the third and final act
This opera was usually performed incomplete and yet
it became a very successful Opera
This opera tells the story of a mysterious woman
known as Lulu, who follows a downward spiral from a
well-kept mistress in Vienna to a street prostitute in
London
Explored the idea of a Feminine fatale and the duality
between her feminine and masculine qualities
6. WOZZECK
Composed between 1914-1923
First performed in 1925
Composed of three acts with five scenes each
Depicted the everyday lives of soldiers and
townspeople in a rural German-speaking town
Caused much controversy because its central character
is an anti-hero, productions across Europe over the
next five years, before the Nazi regime banished it
from German opera houses, established its reputation
8. Impacton
Music
Berg’s music combined Romantic and Expressionist
elements
Some Critics claimed that his music was dangerous to
the community as it went against some beliefs which
only made Berg argue more for his work
