Celebrating Shakespeare
As part of a national exhibition series, the
Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida
International University, in Miami, is hosting
“First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shake-
speare,” through February 28. The “First Folio”
(printed in 1623) is the first-known published
collection of William Shakespeare’s plays.
Copies of the original edition owned by the Folger Shakespeare Library will be
displayed this year, in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto
Rico. This 2016 exhibit series marks the 400th anniversary of The Bard’s death.
In Miami, museumgoers will be able to see the folio itself, attend an open mic
event and enjoy a movie night that will turn part of the museum’s exterior into a
screen for the film The Tempest (2010). Related events held elsewhere on the FIU
campus will include a virtual-reality simulation of Shakespeare’s London and an
improv show. For details, call 305-348-2890 or visit folio.fiu.edu.
This month, a “First Folio” exhibition will also be held at the New Mexico
Museum of Art, in Santa Fe, February 6–28. To find other exhibitions in the
series, visit ala.org/programming/firstfolioitinerary. —Grace Qian

American Beauties in
“Music City”
The 1955 White Penguin (at left)
was one in a series of solid-bodied
electric guitars with gleaming
white finish, and golden binding
and hardware, created in the
1950s as top-of-the-line instru-
ments. This guitar is one of the 75
instruments featured in the exhibi-
tion “American Sound and Beauty:
Guitars from the Bachman-
Gretsch Collection,” on display
through July at the Country Music
Hall of Fame and Museum in
Nashville. The instruments range
in age from the 1930s through the
1980s. Many are being displayed
publicly for the first time.
Constituting the largest set of stringed instruments ever
displayed by the museum, the exhibition showcases historic
Gretsch guitars collected by guitarist-songwriter Randy
Bachman, of the classic rock bands The Guess Who and
Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Call 615-416-2001 or visit
