Sheikh Akij Uddin, born in 1929 in Khulna, overcame early life hardships and began his entrepreneurial journey in Calcutta during the famine of 1942-43. He started his success with a bidi production business, eventually establishing the Akij Group, which has grown to include multiple industries and employs over 32,000 people. By the time of his death in 2006, the group had made significant contributions to the economy, including paying substantial taxes and receiving awards for export performance.
