Man-made environmental problems stem from overuse of natural resources due to open access issues. Environmental problems are complex as they create distortions and inequalities that can lead to conflicts. On Easter Island, overpopulation led to deforestation of palm trees, a crucial resource. The slow growth rate of palm trees meant the population outstripped the environment's ability to recover, leading to soil erosion, agricultural and fishing declines, societal collapse, and a much smaller population by the time Europeans arrived. The Easter Island case illustrates the risks of an institutional failure to effectively respond to environmental pressures from overpopulation and overuse of resources.
The document summarizes the key findings of the fourth assessment of the state of the pan-European environment conducted by the European Environment Agency. It discusses environmental challenges in areas like air quality, water, climate change, biodiversity, marine and coastal environments, sustainable consumption and production, and sectoral drivers of change. It also provides options for future action to address ongoing problems.
The document discusses the relationship between human societies and the natural environment. It notes that while nature always posed risks, human societies have now developed the ability to significantly modify their environment quickly. This introduces new risks from uncoordinated human activities that can impact natural systems. The document examines different types of risks from nature, society, and problems of social cooperation/coordination. It also discusses the assessment of environmental risks and different approaches like cost-benefit analysis and risk management. Property rights regimes and common resource issues are evaluated in the context of sustainability and management of exhaustible resources.
Radiation occurs naturally in many materials found in everyday life. Uranium and thorium are naturally occurring radioactive elements found in the earth's crust. Traces of uranium and thorium are present in glazed ceramics, glass objects, welding rods, camera lenses, and other materials. Other naturally occurring radionuclides like potassium-40, radium-226, and americium-241 are found in bananas, brazil nuts, smoke detectors, and other common items. While radiation is present in many objects and foods, the levels are typically very low and do not pose health risks.

The document suggests solutions like organic farming, biological pest control, and developing alternative energy sources to reduce human impact on the environment.
Improving the viability of probiotics by encapsulation methods for developmen...Open Access Research Paper
The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.
Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...Joshua Orris
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.
Evolving Lifecycles with High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3-D...Joshua Orris
The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

HSDB – The Hazardous Substances DataBank, now covers more than 5,000 hazardous substances, with 20 new radioactive isotopes added.
TOXLINE – merged TOXLINE core and special (Medline and non-Medline together again)
WISER – 20+ radioisotopes to be added soon; DOT Emergency Response Guidelines added
ToxSeek – a meta search & clustering tool to search over 40+ toxicology resources and databases; updated in 2007 with new sources and improved display of results
Tox Town - Port scene added
Household Products – Home office products coming soon; adding 1,000 products in 2007 (for a total of over 7,000)
Haz-Map – updated with over 220 new agents (including radioisotopes)
REMM, the Radiological Event Medical Management system, was released in early March;
REMM provides guidance on diagnosis and treatment for health care provides in the event of a radiation emergency. It is being developed in collaboration with HHS office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response.
REMM is designed for Health Care Providers (HCPs) without formal expertise in radiation safety or radiation medicine who may provide medical care during an accidental or non-accidental Radiation Event.
This site is not specifically designed for the general public.
Many resources and pages including animations describing radiation exposure and contamination.
SIS has recently released NLM’s first resource for kids. ToxMystery, designed for 7-10 year olds, allows kids to explore a house and find potential hazards in the house. Multiple choice questions are asked and once all the hazards are correctly identified, a certificate can be printed.
EPA released the 2005 Toxics release inventory in March and these data will be added to TOXMAP soon. The maps have a new and improved look and the default is the large map (with an option to go smaller)
In addition, “Superfund,” or hazardous waste sites, have now been included….
As well as expanded demographic data (population type, age, race, income) and health data such as cancer mortality or other disease mortality rates. The maps themselves have now have a more accurate appearance.
The TOXNET search results page has a new, streamlined look.
TOXNET’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB) recently added over 20 radioisotopes and ionizing radiation to correspond with REMM
A new version of the National Library of Medicine® (NLM) TOXLINE was released on TOXNET in July. Search results from the two parts of TOXLINE®, TOXLINE Core and TOXLINE Special, are now merged.
TOXLINE Core was the PubMed®/MEDLINE® toxicology subset and TOXLINE Special captured other literature (special journal and other research literature, technical reports and research projects, and archival materials).
This change allows all results to be relevancy ranked in the same way, with results displayed in only one window. A similar merged interface will be provided for the Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology/Environmental Teratology Information Center (DART®/ETIC) database in the Fall.
LactMed is a new database on the possible effects of over 520 drugs on lactation, breastfeeding, and the breastfed infant. It is designed for health professionals, such as ob/gyns, pedicatricians, midwives, nurses, as well as lactation consultants and nursing mothers. Over 50 new drugs were added in 2007.
It provides an extensive review of the literature with summary information about use during lactation and drug levels in the mother and infant. References, with links to PUBMED, are included.
Haz-Map was updated by Dr. Jay Brown. Over 220 new agents were added for a total nearing 1,500 agents
Coming soon – a Home Office Category plus 1,000 new products for a total of over 7,000 products
The Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders
(WISER) is a system designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice.
WISER added the DOT emergency response guidelines (orange book)
WISER will add 20 new agents (radioisotopes) soon.
There have been over 42,000 downloads of WISER onto PDAs and Windows lap or desktops
A web version of WISER was released in early 2006. It provides the same functionality as the PDA version and can be used by emergency responders with pcs or laptops and Internet access either onsite or back at the main facility. It is also used as a training device for emergency responders.
ToxSeek is a metasearch and clustering tool allowing users to search multiple web sites and databases (or the “hidden web”) for high-quality toxicology and environmental health information. The user can choose from over 40 web sites and databases to search – these resources are divided into 6 categories –the entire category or individual resources in each can be selected. Several new resources were added in 2007 and plans to include all resources as the default are underway
The results are displayed in relevancy ranked order (but this can be changed to alphabetical or by source). Previews of the pages can be seen. Results can easily be refined by using the clusters to help narrow or focus your search. Here, the standard for arsenic in drinking water was selected and so the results discuss an acceptable level of arsenic to be found in drinking water.
ToxTown now also has 10 new chemicals, lots of indexes (such as an A-Z Spanish, indexing the Spanish-language pages on toxic chemicals and environmental health concerns, and A-Z English, indexing the text version with direct links to topic pages), and some new environmental health locations and concerns.
In addition to toxicity and physical property searching, ChemIDplus has new flexible structure searching allowing users to find all related chemicals.
SIS has also created “web-liographies,” or lists of links on a variety of important or “hot” topics in environmental health.
Several that were added over the past year include ones on pesticide exposure, lead, and hurricanes. These list of links include canned searches of several NLM databases, including PUBMED, TOXLINE, HSDB, and, in the case of the hurricane page, TOXMAP.
The newest enviro health link is on “Dietary Supplements.”
These enviro-health links include some consumer health links, but also include more technical links as well.
SIS also now offers two “quick tours” on its environmental health and toxicology resources.
One is an overview of these resources – it is 4 minutes long and is a good way to become familiar with the variety of resources available.
The second is much more specific, and describes how to import TOXLINE citations into a reference management program and is about 2 minutes long.
A third quick tour on searching HSDB was recently completed and can be used independently or in conjunction with an NLM Technical Bulletin Skill Kit on HSDB (coming soon)
We have several new Teacher Resources: a pdf flyer for science teacher on NLM resources in general, a video, powerpoint slides, and a teacher page for introducing Tox Town in the classroom, and a for teachers page on TOXMAP
Also in the works is a Drug Information Portal an NLM-wide effort to present a coherent, organized, user-friendly portal to drug information from the entire federal government.
It includes information such as summaries of the effect on breastfeeding and of reviewed biological and physical data, articles from scientific journals and from Toxicological Journals, manufacturers drug label information, Clinical Trials information, biological activities and chemical structures, and toxicological and chemical resources links.
The pilot Dietary Supplements Database contains information on the ingredients of over 1,000 brands of dietary supplements sold in the U.S. and is designed to help not only researchers, but the large audience of supplement consumers as well.
While consumer-oriented information about dietary supplements is available from many sources, this database consolidates and centralizes the information that consumers require to make informed decisions about supplements and provides direct links to pertinent health information and on-going clinical studies at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The database is designed to help answer the following typical questions:
What are the ingredients in specific brands?
Which brands contain specific chemical ingredients?
What fraction of daily recommended nutrients is provided by a specific brand?
Can I compare the amount of a specific nutrient between brands?
What are inactive ingredients in each brand?
Which brands do not contain animal products?
Can I find studies that indicate the proven medical benefits of specific ingredients?
Can I find information on the toxicity of specific ingredients?
Who manufactures a specific brand? How do I contact this manufacturer?
What other information is available about chemicals in the toxicology-related databases of the National Library of Medicine?
How to keep up? NLM offers two environmental health listservs. Both are announcements-only.
The first is a way to keep up with SIS’s environmental health resources. Approximately once a week (and usually less often) a message is generated about new activities or updates to SIS resources.
The second listserv helps users keep up with environmental health issues in the news. MedlinePlus provides access to the latest medical news from Reuters, NY Times, etc. Rather than going to the MedlinePlus news and looking up environmental health, users can join the listserv and get a once a week message about environmental health articles published in the popular press.
I hope we’ve highlighted some of NLM’s long-standing and upcoming resources on environmental health. There are many other interesting activities in NLM’s Specialized Information Services division which we did not get to highlight today, so please contact us if you have any questions or want more information.
Thank you for your time.
