Immediate Challenge: Investment Decision
Process
Objective:
• Improve risk option valuation (investment decisions) for NASA
portfolio of over 1000 R&D Projects under pressure of smaller
staff and budget constraints.
Activities
• Establish technology priorities and challenges based on NRC
Technology Roadmap, NASA Technology Roadmap and
Investment Strategy, and Design Reference Mission scenarios
exploration roadmaps.
• Identify which technologies enable mission capabilities and
options.
• Identify associated uncertainties and risks.
• Identify market and academic enablers

Objective: Use Intelligent Agents to
Accelerate Manual Processes
Solution needed to help decisions and identify investment priorities
TAPP was performed for
HEOMD/AES to assess the degree
of alignment between proposals
submitted for AES funding and
Strategic Goals
The degree of alignment is shown for
NASA centers, Strategic Knowledge
Gaps (SKG), Science and HEO
needs, Technological Benefit and the
commercial mission Inspiration Mars

ai-one’s Space Research Framework (SRF)
ai-one’s SRF is a knowledge framework and toolkit
for research and process improvement leveraging
the NASA Strategic Technology Area taxonomy and
Roadmaps for space exploration.
SRF makes it possible for researchers and analysts to explore,
curate and score NASAs knowledge base by concept(s) through
an interactive dashboard.

SRF - What is it?
• Cloud based service uses Intelligent Agents for each of
NASA’s 300 technologies identified in14 Technology Area
Roadmaps
• Service uses Agents to find/classify/score documents that
contain any of the 300 Technologies
• Service scores documents at the paragraph level
• Agents can be directed to the web to search, monitor and
collect any documents related to a technology
• Agents can be used to identify people and other content that
may be relevant to a technology

SRF - Who is it for?
• NASA & space industry professionals that need better tools for
tagging, searching and organizing documents, plans, content
and data bases.
• NASA researchers monitoring external web sources, academic
papers, blogs, presentations, company information and experts.
• Knowledge management and IT departments that need
documents tagged with NASA technology taxonomy
• Academic researchers & students seeking to position their work
within the NASA Technology Area Roadmaps
• Companies seeking to identify opportunities for their technology
in planned space missions

SRF – Short Term Roadmap
• Phase 1 Completed Jan 2015: Build the prototype solution with
agents for the 13 Highest Priority Level 3 Technologies as
identified by NASA with three dashboards for the following data:
• NASA 14 Strategic Area Roadmaps
• AES (38) Research Requests
• SBIR/STTR 2015 Solicitation
• Phase 2: Add the top 83 Level 3 Technologies to the Agents and
more content/documents to explore (ongoing effort)
• Phase 3: Integrate external search capability to use same
agents to crawl web for unknown research, people, institutions
• Phase 4: Add balance of agents and enrich data with other
sources to provide user with additional dimensions
