This is a sample of the family technology agreement that my family has used for several years with our kids.

1. —Introduction
The following agreement is a family pact and establishes the terms by
which the Rathbun children, regards of age and hereafter referred to
as “users,” may be provided access to technology tools and internet
resources. The ability to access the internet, telephone, and other
media devices is both a privilege and responsibility. Keeping yourself
and others safe is a part of that responsibility. These guidelines do not
assume that the children are nefarious or lack judgment, but rather are
to be used as a source of reference for what is and is not permitted.
These guidelines may be altered at any time by the parents. Such
alterations are permitted by said parents verbally. Any lack of good
judgment, which may not be listed herein will result in disciplinary
action.
—Accounts
• Users may have only one email account, one workstation account
and only one profile on any given social media system or internet
service. No accounts may be established without prior written
approval (may be achieved by email) from the parents.
• When establishing an account, no false information will be provided.
Use of such systems will be in accordance to that systems’ terms of
use. If you are not age eligible to establish an account, then you will
not do so.
• Within 1 hour of updating, creating, or changing any password the
account name, user ID and new or changed password will be
emailed to the parents.
• Parents will be “friended” and “followed” on all social media sites
and will have full access to all activities done online.
• Users may not share the passwords of any account or device with
any individual outside of the family.

2. —Equipment
• All technology resources and tools are the possession of the parents
and is on loan to the users. No stickers, paints, markers or other
permanent disfigurement or marking of the devices may be made
without the permission of the parents.
• Users are not permitted to touch anyone else’s devices without their
prior permission. This includes devices that belong to fellow family
members or those outside of the family. No “hacking” or “pranking”
on other’s devices or taking “selfies” on their devices without their
permission.
• Users many not make any effort to circumventing the security
systems or limitations of access put in place by the parents.
—Safety and Security
• Users are not permitted to “hack” or “work around” any security
tools, restrictions or systems added by the parents.
• Users are not permitted to share any personal information outside of
family members and friends approved by the parents. Personal
information includes address, date of birth, age, middle names,
travel plans, etc… Users may not text or private message anyone
older than 2 years greater than the user, without permission from the
Parents.
• No personal photos will be shared or texted with those of the
opposite sex, outside of public postings on social media sites and
those that are posted will be of a virtuous nature.
• No software may be downloaded or installed without prior written
permission except for routine patches or apps from the Google,
Microsoft or Apple app stores.
• Real names will not be used on any online game systems.

3. • No texts or messages will be deleted on any site until reviewed by the
parents.
• Parents will have full access and will routinely inspect all accounts
and devices.
—Ethical Behavior
• Users shall not lie, curse or use suggestive or explicit language at any
point on any service or for any reason.
• Users shall not defame, belittle, abuse or “bully” any other person
online (or offline for that matter).
• No media, video, podcasts or music will be read, viewed, shared or
listened to if it posses explicit words or subject matter.
• No videos, movies or TV shows will be viewed if they are rated above
PG13 or TV13. No video games will be played that are rated over “T”
for teen.
—Access
• Internet access will be provided from 8am until 11pm daily.
• If any academic project or assignment receives a grade below a
“C” or is not completed on time, it will result in immediate restrictions
of all devices and internet access until the project can be
resubmitted and receives a higher grade. The restriction will be no
less than one week per unacceptable grade.
• No devices or social media accounts will be used during school
hours except for music that would not be considered distracting and
those things necessary to complete academic tasks.
• Only a reasonable amount of entertainment usages will be
acceptable on a daily basis. Users must take time to disconnect and
read or play offline daily. Users will be given two hours a day for

4. entertainment use, after all other assignments are completed.
Parents may provide additional time as school-work and chores are
completed.
—Disciplinary Action
• If any part of this agreement is violated, the user will be suspended in
incremental time periods.
• First Violation – 30 Day Suspension
• Second Violation – 3 month suspension
• Third Violation – 6 month suspension
• Fourth Violation – 12 month suspension
• During any given suspension, users may not have access to devices
or the internet except for that which is required for academic
purposes and even then, only at location designated by a parent
(such as the kitchen table). This will include music, videos and social
interaction online. Music will only be accessible on non-internet
devices. Devices will be turned in to the parent for storage.
