Introduction (297 words, 2.5 minutes)
The Problem
Welcome! My name is Ray...Ray Barreth. And I have the privilege of speaking to you about how Agora Enterprises works to achieve Sustainability and Transformation in our 21st century postmodern world.
I recently returned from China. When I was in China, I connected with the owner of a luxury leather manufacturing company. As we climbed the stairs to the fifth floor, to tour his facility, we passed by several other manufacturing companies. These manufacturing facilities were all filthy dirty and dimly lit, totally disorganized with product and trash flung all over the floors, and their employees looked tired, demoralized, and absolutely miserable.
I was so pleased at arriving at our leather manufacturer. Firstly, I was pleased I climbed 5 flights of stairs on a sultry summer’s day without a cardiac event, secondly, because of what I saw in this leather manufacturing plant. The facility was beautiful, well organized, with sparkling floors and freshly painted walls. It was brightly lit. The employees were happy, grateful to have a job that paid well, and motivated to work. They had good jobs. They even got to take a nap after lunch. What an awesome idea. I tell you...the next time I negotiate my employment contract...I want to include a nap after lunch!
Jim Clifton, the CEO of Gallup, writes in his book summing up the results of Gallup’s World Poll that “what the whole world wants is a good job.”
Unfortunately, leather goods are not the only luxury item in China…Good jobs are a luxury too.
The Gallup poll concluded that there are 3 billion adults on the earth who want or need to work and only 1.8 billion jobs to go around. That’s a 60% shortage of jobs.
Sending Aid does none of that!
Abraham’s school has four campuses, educates 3600 paying students, and employs hundreds of teachers. Agora is partnering with Abraham in starting a technical trade school to train mechanics and engineers. Agora is also launching a Business Development Center to train and launch local entrepreneurs as a part of Abraham’s technical school.
Here’s the kicker. Are you ready for this? 1100 house churches have been born. 28000 believers have come to Christ all from Abraham’s school. 120 full-time pastors shepherd those 28,000 people. The profits from Abraham’s school pay 25% of their salary.
Abraham’s school is a picture of the kingdom. It started with him bringing enterprise to the least of these. He brought job opportunities. He brought hope for a future. He enriched minds with the knowledge of the world God created. His school has been good news to the community. It has brought people to Jesus. It has bridged cultural divides and conflicts. It has been a wellspring for connecting people to Creator God.

At Agora, we believe that unleashing entrepreneurship is the best way to accomplish this goal. When profitable, scalable businesses create good jobs for people who had none, poverty will not thrive.
Our mission at Agora, is all about equipping entrepreneurs to start businesses that enhance the spiritual, social, and economic prosperity of the community.

How We Equip these Entrepreneurs???
As the video said, Agora is in the business of putting poverty out of business.
But this begs the question: how do we bring enterprise to the developing world.
