The AGINFRA PLUS project received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research program to accelerate user-driven innovation in e-infrastructure for food and agriculture. The three year project involves seven partners across Europe led by AGRO-KNOW IKE. It aims to develop innovative applications and workflows powered by open e-infrastructures to strengthen the AGINFRA virtual research environment for the agriculture and food domains. Three initial pilot applications will focus on agro-climatic and economic modeling, food safety risk assessment, and food security issues.

Smart Farming is a development that emphasizes the use of information and communication technology in the
cyber-physical farm management cycle. New technologies such as the Internet of Things and Cloud Computing
are expected to leverage this development and introduce more robots and artificial intelligence in farming.
This is encompassed by the phenomenon of Big Data, massive volumes of data with a wide variety that can be
captured, analysed and used for decision-making. This review aims to gain insight into the state-of-the-art of
Big Data applications in Smart Farming and identify the related socio-economic challenges to be addressed. Following
a structured approach, a conceptual framework for analysiswas developed that can also be used for future
studies on this topic. The review shows that the scope of Big Data applications in Smart Farming goes beyond
primary production; it is influencing the entire food supply chain. Big data are being used to provide predictive
insights in farming operations, drive real-time operational decisions, and redesign business processes for
game-changing business models. Several authors therefore suggest that Big Data will cause major shifts in
roles and power relationsamong different players in current food supply chain networks. The landscape of stakeholders
exhibits an interesting gamebetween powerful tech companies, venture capitalists and often small startups
and new entrants. At the same time there are several public institutions that publish open data, under the
condition that the privacy of persons must be guaranteed. The future of Smart Farming may unravel in a continuum
of two extreme scenarios: 1) closed, proprietary systems in which the farmer is part of a highly integrated
food supply chain or 2) open, collaborative systems inwhich the farmer and every other stakeholder in the chain
network is flexible in choosing business partners as well for the technology as for the food production side. The
further development of data and application infrastructures (platforms and standards) and their institutional
embedment will play a crucial role in the battle between these scenarios. From a socio-economic perspective,
the authors propose to give research priority to organizational issues concerning governance issues and suitable
business models for data sharing in different supply chain scenarios.

New exascale HPC techniques to energy industry simulations.
The document outlines a 2 million Euro and 6 million Reais project called HPC4E to apply exascale high performance computing (HPC) technology to energy industry simulations in wind, oil and gas, and biomass. The envisioned solutions include using HPC to efficiently design wind farms, forecast daily wind power production, predict biomass fuel performance, and obtain detailed images of deep hydrocarbon reservoirs. Research outcomes will be published and disseminated to the scientific community and industrial partners will have direct access to innovative ideas and tools to apply internally. The long term goal is to more efficiently manage energy resources through HPC resulting in cheaper, cleaner, and safer energy production.

The EU4Energy Initiative is part of the Eastern Partnership. In this specific initiative, the European Union works with the six Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine), as well as the five states of Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the region. The EU finances projects and programmes that promote energy market reforms and sustainable energy solutions to assist partner countries in reducing their energy dependency, making them more resilient, whilst also reducing their carbon footprint. These measures also help households and businesses manage more efficiently their energy consumption.
Under the EU4Energy Initiative, the European Union is working with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the secretariats of the Energy Community and the Energy Charter more specifically to improve the quality of energy data and statistics, to shape regional policy-making discussions, to strengthen legislative and regulatory frameworks, and to improve access to information in the partner countries.

This document provides information about Prof. Vesna Bengin and the BioSense Institute in Serbia. BioSense is a public research institute focused on information technology in agriculture and food systems. It has 84 permanent staff and 50 part-time staff conducting multidisciplinary research. BioSense's mission is to apply information technologies to address challenges in agriculture through projects like their Digital Farm, which demonstrates technologies like sensors, drones and satellite imagery to farmers. Fostering Business and Software Ecosystems for large-scale Uptake of IoT in F...
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to be a real game changer that will drastically improve productivity and sustainability in food and farming. However, current IoT applications in this domain are still fragmentary and mainly used by a small group of early adopters. The Internet of Food and Farm 2020 Large-Scale Pilot (IoF2020) addresses the organizational and technological challenges to overcome this situation by fostering a large-scale uptake of IoT in the European food and farming domain. The heart of the project is formed by a balanced set of multi-actor trials that reflect the diversity of the food and farming domain. Each trial is composed of well-delineated use cases developing IoT solutions for the most relevant challenges of the concerned subsector. The project conducts 5 trials with a total of 19 use cases in arable, dairy, fruits, vegetables and meat production. IoF2020 embraces a lean multi-actor approach that combines the development of Minimal Viable Products (MVPs) in short iterations with the active involvement of various stakeholders. The architectural approach supports interoperability of multiple use case systems and reuse of IoT components across them. Use cases are also supported in developing business and solving governance issues. The IoF2020 ecosystem and collaboration space is established to boost the uptake of IoT in Food and Farming and pave the way for new innovations.
Steering science through output indicators & data capitalism
This presentation was given at the 23rd Congress of the European Society of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition held at the University of Turin. It describes how commercial companies create operating systems with highly integrated services, which scientists use in every phase of their daily work and which by the way produce data about this work. These data, in turn, are processed by the commercial providers and converted into further products, which are now offered to the science bureaucracy as a tool for recruitment and research planning. The structure and marketing of both the tools for scientists and the controlling tools for the administration have features that are widely known from electronic environments (compliance through convenience, vendor-lock-in), but also features that show at the same time elements of the centrally planned economy and (although at first sight incompatible with it) a strong competitive connotation. The presentation also discusses the possible consequences of such a data-driven science control for individual researchers as well as for science as a social enterprise.
Livestock GRACEnet
The Livestock GRACEnet mission is to develop livestock management practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide accurate measurement and modeling of emissions. The group aims to collaborate with scientists and stakeholders, support policymakers with consistent data, and efficiently share new knowledge. Livestock GRACEnet includes 24 scientists across 13 locations focusing on beef, dairy, poultry and swine emissions. The goals are to create emissions measurement protocols, develop factsheets on management practices, build an emissions database, enhance scientist collaboration, and interact with agencies on emissions information. The website provides factsheets and information on the group's work measuring and reducing livestock emissions.

Realising a Science Gateway for the Agri-food: the AGINFRAplus Experience

The Internet of Food and Farm 2020 Large-Scale Pilot (IoF2020) addresses the organizational and technological challenges to overcome this situation by fostering a large-scale uptake of IoT in the European food and farming domain. The heart of the project is formed by a balanced set of multi-actor trials that reflect the diversity of the food and farming domain. Each trial is composed of well-delineated use cases developing IoT solutions for the most relevant challenges of the concerned subsector. The project conducts 5 trials with a total of 19 use cases in arable, dairy, fruits, vegetables and meat production. IoF2020 embraces a lean multi-actor approach that combines the development of Minimal Viable Products (MVPs) in short iterations with the active involvement of various stakeholders. The architectural approach supports interoperability of multiple use case systems and reuse of IoT components across them. Use cases are also supported in developing business and solving governance issues. The IoF2020 ecosystem and collaboration space is established to boost the uptake of IoT in Food and Farming and pave the way for new innovations.
Steering science through output indicators & data capitalism
This presentation was given at the 23rd Congress of the European Society of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition held at the University of Turin. It describes how commercial companies create operating systems with highly integrated services, which scientists use in every phase of their daily work and which by the way produce data about this work. These data, in turn, are processed by the commercial providers and converted into further products, which are now offered to the science bureaucracy as a tool for recruitment and research planning. The structure and marketing of both the tools for scientists and the controlling tools for the administration have features that are widely known from electronic environments (compliance through convenience, vendor-lock-in), but also features that show at the same time elements of the centrally planned economy and (although at first sight incompatible with it) a strong competitive connotation. The presentation also discusses the possible consequences of such a data-driven science control for individual researchers as well as for science as a social enterprise.
Livestock GRACEnet
The Livestock GRACEnet mission is to develop livestock management practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide accurate measurement and modeling of emissions. The group aims to collaborate with scientists and stakeholders, support policymakers with consistent data, and efficiently share new knowledge. Livestock GRACEnet includes 24 scientists across 13 locations focusing on beef, dairy, poultry and swine emissions. The goals are to create emissions measurement protocols, develop factsheets on management practices, build an emissions database, enhance scientist collaboration, and interact with agencies on emissions information. The website provides factsheets and information on the group's work measuring and reducing livestock emissions.

trend of Smart Farming, introducing more sensors, robots and artificial intelligence, encompassed by the
phenomenon of Big Data.
This presentation will give a quick insight into the state-of-the-art of Big Data applications in Smart Farming
and identify the related challenges that have to be addressed. It shows that the scope of Big Data
applications in Smart Farming goes beyond the farm; it is influencing the entire food supply chain. Big data
are being used to provide predictive insights in farming operations, drive real-time operational decisions, and
redesign business processes for game-changing business models.
It is expected that Big Data will cause major shifts in roles and power relations among different players in
current food supply chain networks. The landscape of stakeholders exhibits an interesting game between
powerful tech companies, venture capitalists and often small startups and new entrants. At the same time
there are several public institutions that publish open data, under the condition that the privacy of persons
must be guaranteed. The future of Smart Farming may unravel in a continuum of two extreme scenarios: 1)
closed, proprietary systems or 2) open, collaborative systems.
The development of data and application infrastructures (platforms and standards) and their institutional
embedment will play a crucial role in the battle between these scenarios. A major challenge is therefore to
cope with governance issues and define suitable business models for data sharing in different supply chain
scenarios.

Realising a Science Gateway for the Agri-food: the AGINFRAplus Experience

E-Infrastructure for open agri-food sciences - The landscape
eROSA has received funding from the European Union to map out the technical ecosystem for open agriculture and food science data. The mapping is based on analyzing various eROSA, RDA, and other project activities and identifies organizations, initiatives, data sources, and research infrastructures. The landscape analysis found that while there is massive data production, data is often siloed and difficult to find or access due to immature practices around data management, sharing, and analysis. Challenges include technical issues like long-term preservation and semantics standardization as well as cultural challenges engaging communities and developing sustainable governance models.

Pathways for EOSC-hub and MaX collaboration
1) The MaX Centre of Excellence aims to enable high-throughput materials design through automated simulations and tracking of provenance using the AiiDA platform.

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

Agro-climatic & Economic Modelling AGINFRA+ will help the discovery, reuse and exploitation of heterogeneous data sources towards producing multi-model, multi-crop and multi-location simulation ensembles that will be linked to multi-climate scenarios to perform consistent simulations of future climate change effects. Food Safety Risk Assessment AGINFRA+ will support data-intensive applications powered by the FoodRisk-Labs suite of software tools, including the extension of their capabilities to handle large-scale datasets, to visualize complex data, mathematical models as well as simulation results and to deploy generated data processing workflows as web-based services.
