African Americans have lived in the Western United States throughout history, though their stories and experiences are often overlooked in popular histories that focus on white settlers. This presentation provides an overview of works that document the literature and scholarship around African Americans in the West, highlighting some of the key sources and studies that can help us better understand this important aspect of the region's history. More research is still needed to fully capture the full diversity of African American lives and communities in the Western states.
