David Mandessi Diop was a revolutionary African poet born in France to West African parents. He highlighted the problems brought by colonialism through his involvement in the Negritude movement and in his poems published in "Presence Africaine" and his book "Coups de pillon". In his famous poem "Africa my Africa", Diop expresses longing for Africa despite never having visited, describing the "proud warriors" and "beautiful black blood" of his heritage. He criticizes the exploitation and slavery of colonialism. While urging Africans to stand up to humiliation, a "grave voice" counsels patience, comparing Africans to a strong young tree that will eventually bear the "bitter fruit of liberty
