1. INTRODUCTION
Information security and assurance management is vital for
the success of organizations. It is particularly relevant for
global companies whose customers demand a high level of
security for their products. Meeting such high expectations
requires companies to study security best practices,
continually invest in technical and human resources, and
implement a secure corporate environment. The goal of this
paper is to discuss some security challenges faced by global
organizations and to provide suggestions to IS academics
concerning security curriculum to effectively educate the
next generation IT workforce to meet these challenges.
2. SECURITY CHALLENGES FACED BY GLOBAL
COMPANIES
This advisory focuses on security challenges faced by global
companies. For instance, security challenges faced by a
multinational company operating manufacturing plants in
several countries are likely to be much different than those of
a company with a manufacturing plant in a single location.
The goal of this section is to present some security
challenges faced by global companies.
What many companies do in terms of security is driven
by the needs of their customers. For instance, consider the
case of a global manufacturing company that makes
hardware for a smart card. Smart cards include embedded
integrated circuits and customers generally provide the
manufacturer with a detailed list of functional and assurance
requirements for security. The manufacturer of the hardware
is expected to comply with the specifications of the
customer. If the company decides to manufacture in two
plants in Europe and the U.S., it becomes important for the
manufacturer to have uniform security standards in both

African Americans men are at a greater risk for developing prostate .docx
African Americans men are at a greater risk for developing prostate cancer than the white men. In every six individuals from this ethnic group, there is one who is at risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime. African Americans are 1.8 times more exposed to the risk of developing the disease and 2.2 times more likely succumb from this disease as compared to white men. The increase in the higher risk of prostate cancer among Africa Americans is linked to socioeconomic status. There is a lower socioeconomic status of African Americans and this exposing to high cases of prostate cancer as a result of poor medical check-up and poor healthcare outcomes (Owens et al., 2014).
There are also racial biases and this is harming African Americans in terms of preventive care since they have lower chances of being provided with the PSA test. Recent studies reveal that men from this ethnic group are unlikely to have early diagnosis for the prostate cancer. They are also not likely to be treated in time for the disease like the white men. There are several treatment options and learning sources about the options for prostate cancer. Therefore, the evidence-based, primary care health promotion recommendation to deal with prostate cancer among African Americans involves the prevention programs that are tailored to African Americans to help in the reduction of health disparities (Jackson, Owens, Friedman, & Dubose-Morris, 2015).
There is a need to incorporate culturally suitable and targeted messages and the images, the performance of faith-based initiatives, and the delivery of the educational programs in non-traditional venues for example the common place where people gather. It is also important to include key partners and the stakeholder in the planning, implementation, and assessment of the health and the cancer educational programs to help in the improvement of the health of the community and supporting community engagement. The development of the IDM education program for African American families through working with the community and the clinical partners is helping in the reduction of prostate cancer diseases (Jackson et al., 2015).

The 16-year-old boy in the discussion scenario presented to the clinic with specific complaints that are common in Strep Throat infection. He complained of a sore throat for 3 days. He denied recent cold, influenza, ear infections, or allergies. Redness, +3 tonsil edema, positive anterior and posterior cervical adenopathy, low-grade temperature, and pharyngeal exudate were noted by the practitioner on the exam. A diagnosis of Strep Throat was confirmed by a positive rapid strep throat culture. Penicillin was prescribed.
Strep Throat is not a genetic disorder, but an infectious one caused by A. Streptococcus bacteria. It is not gender-specific. Strep throat most commonly occurs during the late winter or early spring months as a direct result of people being grouped closely together indoors allowing it to spread easily via direct contact (American Academy of Family Physicians, 2016).
The patient’s symptomology and positive culture confirm that he was infected by A. Streptococcus bacteria. His body’s response to A. Streptococcus bacteria is the body’s initial inflammatory response to this bacteria; redness, swelling, heat, and pain (Kahn Academy, 2010). The patient’s anaphylactic response to penicillin was mediated by ‘IgE antibodies that are produced by the immune system in response to an environmental allergen’ (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). These allergens include pollens, animal dander, dust mites or fungi (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). The patient’s anaphylactic response to penicillin, a fungus, was unknown prior to its administration.
When a bacterial infection occurs, the body releases mast cells that are activated by chemokines to attack the infection (Kahn Academy, 2010). Histamine is released causing vasodilation (Kahn Academy, 2010). Endothelial cells are pushed apart and capillaries become larger and dilated, causing swelling to occur (Kahn Academy, 2010). The capillary walls become more porous allowing more cells to pass through them (Kahn Academy, 2010). Neutrophils act as the first responders and are attracted to the chemokines (Kahn Academy, 2010). They roll along the endothelial wall, squeezing through to eat up bacteria and damaged cells (Kahn Academy, 2010). Specific action via B and T cells are also activated to attack and destroy the bacteria (Kahn Academy, 2010).
The patient's anaphylactic response, Type I hypersensitivity reaction, to IgE antibodies is produced by the ‘immune system in response to environmental allergens’ (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). If left untreated, it can result in a life-threatening or irreversible injury that includes death (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). While the patient did not have a known allergy and it was disclosed that he had none, Type I hypersensitivity reactions occur after a previous sensitization (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). Dr. Steven Deck has over 25 years of experience developing and
implementing risk management, environmental health and safety,
international safety and security, emergency response, and continuity of
operation programs and processes in higher education and in biomedical and
pharmaceutical industries. Dr. Deck has also lead efforts to identify and treat
risks associated with implementing a strategic plan at a large research
university. Hence, he has experience managing risks at both the operational
and strategic level. He holds a doctorate in management, an MBA, and a
bachelor’s degree in safety and industrial hygiene management. Dr. Deck
also holds an associate in risk management and is a certified industrial
hygienist, safety professional, and hazardous materials manager.
Dedication
This book is dedicated to the people who tirelessly work to reduce
risks organizations face in today’s fast-paced world. Their efforts sometimes
go unnoticed since, if successful, risk managers prevent adverse events from
occurring or significantly reduce their impact on the organization. A good
day for a risk manager is one that is uneventful with operations continuing
without interruption. However, their work is critical to an organization’s
ability to achieve its mission. By reducing risks that threaten an
organization’s survival, risk managers preserve the organization’s ability to
offer people opportunities to earn a living and provide for their families.

Symptoms of adult/geriatric depression disorder
A patient with geriatric depression disorder will be seen to have issues of mood swings as the main symptoms of the condition. The other symptoms that will be evident will include issues of the feeling of despair and sad and the patient will have issues of pain and aches in all parts of the body. Laird et al. (2019) allude that a patient with the health condition will have risks of loss of appetite and lack of hope or lacking any willingness to get help. There are risks of the patient as well as lacking any morale in improving their condition.
Causes
Vlasova et al. (2019) allude that one of the main risk factors that increased the chance of a patient getting geriatric depression is old age. As such, a patient who is old will be at high risk of being affected by the health condition. The other risk factor is that women are at higher risk of suffering from the health issue as compared to their male counterparts. The people who have a low-level education as well as those that have physical illnesses and influencing the standard of thinking of the person.
Thus, there is a need for healthcare providers to help in the education of the patients who are at risk of suffering from the health condition. The patients who are found to be making use of various drugs and that have psychological stressors are at high risk of being affected by the health concern. The patients as well may lead to affecting the patients who have white matter changes.
Patient case
This is a case of 32-year-old patients of Hispanic origin and who came to the US for his education. The patient has his mother passing on while he was in school and ended up being admitted to the healthcare facility as a result of depression issues. On having an assessment, it is found that the patient does not suffer from any other health issue and the patient has presented that he has had pain and stiff parts of the body.

Chandler Corp: Choosing the Right Costing Method to Evaluate New Products

INTRODUCTION
Over many years, Chandler Corporation has become a profitable business by making
awnings, pavilions, and other types of shade shelters. Most of the customers are
municipalities looking for shelters for state parks or school districts that want covered
walkways for students. Every job is custom, because each customer has different
needs, and each location has different features. Chandler makes products when it
receives an order; it does not produce products for inventory. While a customer might
order multiple units for its site, the durability of the products means that the customer
will not have to reorder replacements for decades.
So, when Ned Beale, the vice president of Sales and Marketing at Chandler, received
a call from a swimming pool retailer in Florida that wanted a continuous supply of
identical shelters, he was excited about the potential sales but a bit unsure as to
whether Chandler could handle the order. The previous week he had gotten a similar
call from a landscaping company inquiring about lattice-covered trellises the company
wanted to incorporate into its landscape designs. He immediately texted Dan Smith, the
CFO of Chandler, requesting a meeting to discuss whether to accept the new orders.
COMPANY BACKGROUND
Chandler Corporation, located in Chandler, Arizona, has been in the business of
manufacturing fixed outdoor shade shelters for more than 30 years. Its customers are
often public agencies (for example, city planners, schools, public parks, and so on), but
they sometimes are landscape architects and designers who are developing outdoor
areas for private customers (such as businesses, daycare centers, homes, and so on).
The products are produced in a wide variety of configurations, including amphitheaters,
pavilions, gazebos, trellises, transit shelters, walkway covers, dugout/bleacher covers,
and fabric shade structures. These are all engineered to the customer’s specification
and are quick to install, which minimizes building time and disruption. Chandler provides
a complete turnkey service from concept to completion with custom products for each
site. The primary value driver is a quality design that can be easily installed on site.
PRODUCTS
Chandler specializes in shelters with tubular metal frames. Because of state and local
building codes and site-specific constraints, Chandler’s products are custom engineered
and made for each location. A typical structure includes a steel frame, roofing, and other
decorative and functional options. The frame consists of columns and supports for the
roof, which can be painted in any color. Columns vary from simple designs, which use
uprights consisting of one rect.

Acute sinusitis affects millions of persons in the United States every year and is among the most common reasons for physician visits, prompting over 3 million visits annually. Patients with sinusitis present with congestion and blockage of the nasal passages, usually in response to viral infection or allergic rhinitis but occasionally to other stimuli. The paranasal sinuses become inflamed, and mucus cannot drain properly, providing an environment where bacteria, or rarely fungus, can thrive. Suggestive symptoms of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) include nasal congestion and obstruction, purulent nasal discharge, maxillary tooth discomfort, and facial pain or pressure that is worse or localized to the sinuses when bending forward. Other signs and symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, hyposmia or anosmia, ear pressure or fullness, headache, and halitosis. Patients may also have signs and symptoms of eustachian tube dysfunction (e.g., ear pain, fullness or pressure, hearing loss, or tinnitus) (Patel & hwang, 2019). Sinus cavity opacity on transillumination suggests sinusitis. Facial tenderness to palpation or percussion may be present and most easily appreciated over the frontal or maxillary sinuses. Diagnosis of acute cases of sinusitis is usually established clinically. However, imaging or endoscopy should be considered if symptoms fail to improve within 7 days of diagnosis or worsen during the initial management of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. Laboratory tests: to determine underlying condition if suspected (e.g., nasal cytology allergic rhinitis, HIV test, sweat chloride test for cystic fibrosis). Imaging include X-ray of sinuses (poor sensitivity): decreased transparency of sinus, air-fluid levels may be seen; CT of sinuses (imaging modality of choice) may show soft tissue swelling, mucoperiosteal thickening, and air-fluid levels, bony erosions and extension in cases of invasive mucormycosis infection and fungus balls in the case of chronic aspergillosis infection. MRI may be considered to confirm soft tissue extension in invasive disease. Nasal endoscopy may reveal mucosal erythema and edema, with sinus ostia and nasal passages blocked by discharge, necrotic mucosa in the case of invasive mucormycosis infection. Biopsy and culture may be performed (hyphae in fungal disease, eosinophils in allergic sinusitis) (Bickley, Szilagyi, & Hoffman, 2017).
The differential diagnoses of sinusitis include allergic rhinitis and migraine. Allergic rhinitis differentiating signs and symptoms include ocular and/or nasal pruritus, sneezing, rhinorrhea, headache, purulent discharge, and facial pain/pressure are less common. Differentiating test include allergen skin-prick testing: wheal and flare reaction after specific allergen is introduced into the skin is 3 mm larger than negative (saline) control. In vitro-specific IgE determination: specific allergen response. Migraine differentiating signs and symptoms include reports a history of "recurrent sinus.

What Does “Non-Recurring” Really Mean
Many companies incur restructuring charges as they attempt to reduce costs. They often label these items in the income statement as “non-recurring” charges, to suggest that they are isolated events, unlikely to occur in future periods. The question for analysts is, are these costs really one-time, “nonrecurring events” or do they reflect problems that the company will be facing for many periods in the future? If they are one-time events, then they can be largely ignored when trying to predict future earnings. But, some companies report “one-time” restructuring charges over and over again. For example, Procter & Gamble reported a restructuring charge in 12 consecutive quarters, and Motorola had “special” charges in 14 consecutive quarters. On the other hand, other companies have a restructuring charge only once in a 5- or 10-year period. There appears to be no substitute for careful analysis of the numbers that comprise net income.

African Americans men are at a greater risk for developing prostate cancer than the white men. In every six individuals from this ethnic group, there is one who is at risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime. African Americans are 1.8 times more exposed to the risk of developing the disease and 2.2 times more likely succumb from this disease as compared to white men. The increase in the higher risk of prostate cancer among Africa Americans is linked to socioeconomic status. There is a lower socioeconomic status of African Americans and this exposing to high cases of prostate cancer as a result of poor medical check-up and poor healthcare outcomes (Owens et al., 2014).
There are also racial biases and this is harming African Americans in terms of preventive care since they have lower chances of being provided with the PSA test. Recent studies reveal that men from this ethnic group are unlikely to have early diagnosis for the prostate cancer. They are also not likely to be treated in time for the disease like the white men. There are several treatment options and learning sources about the options for prostate cancer. Therefore, the evidence-based, primary care health promotion recommendation to deal with prostate cancer among African Americans involves the prevention programs that are tailored to African Americans to help in the reduction of health disparities (Jackson, Owens, Friedman, & Dubose-Morris, 2015).
There is a need to incorporate culturally suitable and targeted messages and the images, the performance of faith-based initiatives, and the delivery of the educational programs in non-traditional venues for example the common place where people gather. It is also important to include key partners and the stakeholder in the planning, implementation, and assessment of the health and the cancer educational programs to help in the improvement of the health of the community and supporting community engagement. The development of the IDM education program for African American families through working with the community and the clinical partners is helping in the reduction of prostate cancer diseases (Jackson et al., 2015).

The 16-year-old boy in the discussion scenario presented to the clinic with specific complaints that are common in Strep Throat infection. He complained of a sore throat for 3 days. He denied recent cold, influenza, ear infections, or allergies. Redness, +3 tonsil edema, positive anterior and posterior cervical adenopathy, low-grade temperature, and pharyngeal exudate were noted by the practitioner on the exam. A diagnosis of Strep Throat was confirmed by a positive rapid strep throat culture. Penicillin was prescribed.
Strep Throat is not a genetic disorder, but an infectious one caused by A. Streptococcus bacteria. It is not gender-specific. Strep throat most commonly occurs during the late winter or early spring months as a direct result of people being grouped closely together indoors allowing it to spread easily via direct contact (American Academy of Family Physicians, 2016).
The patient’s symptomology and positive culture confirm that he was infected by A. Streptococcus bacteria. His body’s response to A. Streptococcus bacteria is the body’s initial inflammatory response to this bacteria; redness, swelling, heat, and pain (Kahn Academy, 2010). The patient’s anaphylactic response to penicillin was mediated by ‘IgE antibodies that are produced by the immune system in response to an environmental allergen’ (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). These allergens include pollens, animal dander, dust mites or fungi (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). The patient’s anaphylactic response to penicillin, a fungus, was unknown prior to its administration.
When a bacterial infection occurs, the body releases mast cells that are activated by chemokines to attack the infection (Kahn Academy, 2010). Histamine is released causing vasodilation (Kahn Academy, 2010). Endothelial cells are pushed apart and capillaries become larger and dilated, causing swelling to occur (Kahn Academy, 2010). The capillary walls become more porous allowing more cells to pass through them (Kahn Academy, 2010). Neutrophils act as the first responders and are attracted to the chemokines (Kahn Academy, 2010). They roll along the endothelial wall, squeezing through to eat up bacteria and damaged cells (Kahn Academy, 2010). Specific action via B and T cells are also activated to attack and destroy the bacteria (Kahn Academy, 2010).
The patient's anaphylactic response, Type I hypersensitivity reaction, to IgE antibodies is produced by the ‘immune system in response to environmental allergens’ (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). If left untreated, it can result in a life-threatening or irreversible injury that includes death (Justiz-Vaillant & Zito, 2019). Chandler Corp: Choosing the Right Costing Method to Evaluate New Products

INTRODUCTION
Over many years, Chandler Corporation has become a profitable business by making
awnings, pavilions, and other types of shade shelters. Most of the customers are
municipalities looking for shelters for state parks or school districts that want covered
walkways for students. Every job is custom, because each customer has different
needs, and each location has different features. Chandler makes products when it
receives an order; it does not produce products for inventory. While a customer might
order multiple units for its site, the durability of the products means that the customer
will not have to reorder replacements for decades.
So, when Ned Beale, the vice president of Sales and Marketing at Chandler, received
a call from a swimming pool retailer in Florida that wanted a continuous supply of
identical shelters, he was excited about the potential sales but a bit unsure as to
whether Chandler could handle the order. The previous week he had gotten a similar
call from a landscaping company inquiring about lattice-covered trellises the company
wanted to incorporate into its landscape designs. He immediately texted Dan Smith, the
CFO of Chandler, requesting a meeting to discuss whether to accept the new orders.
COMPANY BACKGROUND
Chandler Corporation, located in Chandler, Arizona, has been in the business of
manufacturing fixed outdoor shade shelters for more than 30 years. Its customers are
often public agencies (for example, city planners, schools, public parks, and so on), but
they sometimes are landscape architects and designers who are developing outdoor
areas for private customers (such as businesses, daycare centers, homes, and so on).
The products are produced in a wide variety of configurations, including amphitheaters,
pavilions, gazebos, trellises, transit shelters, walkway covers, dugout/bleacher covers,
and fabric shade structures. These are all engineered to the customer’s specification
and are quick to install, which minimizes building time and disruption. Chandler provides
a complete turnkey service from concept to completion with custom products for each
site. The primary value driver is a quality design that can be easily installed on site.
PRODUCTS
Chandler specializes in shelters with tubular metal frames. Because of state and local
building codes and site-specific constraints, Chandler’s products are custom engineered
and made for each location. A typical structure includes a steel frame, roofing, and other
decorative and functional options. The frame consists of columns and supports for the
roof, which can be painted in any color. Columns vary from simple designs, which use
uprights consisting of one rect.

Patients with sinusitis present with congestion and blockage of the nasal passages, usually in response to viral infection or allergic rhinitis but occasionally to other stimuli. The paranasal sinuses become inflamed, and mucus cannot drain properly, providing an environment where bacteria, or rarely fungus, can thrive. Suggestive symptoms of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS) include nasal congestion and obstruction, purulent nasal discharge, maxillary tooth discomfort, and facial pain or pressure that is worse or localized to the sinuses when bending forward. Other signs and symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, hyposmia or anosmia, ear pressure or fullness, headache, and halitosis. Patients may also have signs and symptoms of eustachian tube dysfunction (e.g., ear pain, fullness or pressure, hearing loss, or tinnitus) (Patel & hwang, 2019). Sinus cavity opacity on transillumination suggests sinusitis. Facial tenderness to palpation or percussion may be present and most easily appreciated over the frontal or maxillary sinuses. Diagnosis of acute cases of sinusitis is usually established clinically. However, imaging or endoscopy should be considered if symptoms fail to improve within 7 days of diagnosis or worsen during the initial management of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis. Laboratory tests: to determine underlying condition if suspected (e.g., nasal cytology allergic rhinitis, HIV test, sweat chloride test for cystic fibrosis). Imaging include X-ray of sinuses (poor sensitivity): decreased transparency of sinus, air-fluid levels may be seen; CT of sinuses (imaging modality of choice) may show soft tissue swelling, mucoperiosteal thickening, and air-fluid levels, bony erosions and extension in cases of invasive mucormycosis infection and fungus balls in the case of chronic aspergillosis infection. MRI may be considered to confirm soft tissue extension in invasive disease. Nasal endoscopy may reveal mucosal erythema and edema, with sinus ostia and nasal passages blocked by discharge, necrotic mucosa in the case of invasive mucormycosis infection. Biopsy and culture may be performed (hyphae in fungal disease, eosinophils in allergic sinusitis) (Bickley, Szilagyi, & Hoffman, 2017).
The differential diagnoses of sinusitis include allergic rhinitis and migraine. Allergic rhinitis differentiating signs and symptoms include ocular and/or nasal pruritus, sneezing, rhinorrhea, headache, purulent discharge, and facial pain/pressure are less common. Differentiating test include allergen skin-prick testing: wheal and flare reaction after specific allergen is introduced into the skin is 3 mm larger than negative (saline) control. In vitro-specific IgE determination: specific allergen response. Migraine differentiating signs and symptoms include reports a history of "recurrent sinus.

Illustration: Assume that during 2017 Acro Energy Inc. has income before income taxes of $800,000. During 2017, Acro discontinued and sold its unprofitable chemical division. The loss in 2017 from chemical operations (net of $60,000 taxes) was $140,000. The loss on disposal of the chemical division (net of $30,000 taxes) was $70,000. Assuming a 30% tax rate on income.
Prepare Acro’s statement of comprehensive income for the year ended December 31, 2017.

What Does “Non-Recurring” Really Mean
Many companies incur restructuring charges as they attempt to reduce costs. They often label these items in the income statement as “non-recurring” charges, to suggest that they are isolated events, unlikely to occur in future periods. The question for analysts is, are these costs really one-time, “nonrecurring events” or do they reflect problems that the company will be facing for many periods in the future? If they are one-time events, then they can be largely ignored when trying to predict future earnings. But, some companies report “one-time” restructuring charges over and over again. For example, Procter & Gamble reported a restructuring charge in 12 consecutive quarters, and Motorola had “special” charges in 14 consecutive quarters. On the other hand, other companies have a restructuring charge only once in a 5- or 10-year period. There appears to be no substitute for careful analysis of the numbers that comprise net income.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
