The author volunteered at Gulf Coast Kid's House, finding it heartbreaking but also feeling inspired by children's resilience. Statistics on child abuse in the area were alarming, with over 4,300 reports annually and Gulf Coast Kid's House assisting over 150 new abuse investigations and 162 child victims in a recent month. The author later participated in a fun run that donated proceeds to Gulf Coast Kid's House.
