In the fast-paced environment in which nurses work, small differences in decision making, processes, work ethic, and personal characteristics can quickly escalate
As a nurse manager, you need to develop and model skills that effectively address conflict situations. Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, offers sound advice that can be applied to conflict management and resolution. In Habit 4, Think Win-Win, Covey (2004) explains, “[m]any people think in terms of either/or: either you’re nice or you’re tough. Win-win requires that you be both. It is a balancing act between courage and consideration.” Ultimately, how you manage conflict in your setting will determine whether you foster an environment that breeds contempt or one that fosters growth.
Conflict abounds in any workplace; it is a normal part of organizational life. Instead of avoiding or ignoring conflict, the role of the nurse manager is to coach employees through conflict situations and to exercise judgment on how and when to intervene. When managed effectively and focused on substantive issues, conflict can actually lead to better outcomes. However, when interpersonal conflicts go unaddressed, employee morale and engagement–two factors that can seriously impact quality of patient care—will dwindle.
When nurse managers observe employees engaging in toxic or inappropriate workplace behaviors, they must prepare to give difficult feedback. Delivering difficult feedback can be challenging for nurse managers, as they must address employees in a way that is authoritative, supportive, and resolute. One strategy nurse managers can use to deliver difficult feedback is to employ the scripting framework. In this week’s Discussion, you gain experience with using the scripting framework to resolve a conflict situation that you have observed in your past or present workplace.

1. Earlier in the class, we considered the various numeric types available in VB. We even talked about the bounds for these numeric types. Please identify each of the numeric types in VB and their numeric bounds (e.g., from 2 to 63). Order those types from smallest to largest by their upper bound. Once you have done that, find an example of something in the world that fits between the upper bound of its predecessor and its own upper bound.
For example: if you have a class that goes from 1 to 5 and another that goes from 1 to 20, you could say that there are 16teams in the American Football Conference in the NFL (16 is between 5 and 20).
Your answer should include each of the types, their bounds, AND an example.

Research shows that the quality of the patient–provider relationship (Beach, Keruly, & Moore, 2006) and the communications between the patient and provider (Piette et al., 2003) influence a patient’s course of treatment and health outcomes. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to good communication in the patient–provider relationship. Health professionals debate about the best strategies for effective communication.
The initial steps of the Generalist Intervention Model support engagement and building of rapport between a patient and a social worker. Medical social workers are trained to be effective listeners and communicators. Given their unique skills, medical social workers are often called upon to support and navigate the relationships between patients and other providers on the health care team as advocates, liaisons, and mediators.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Consider patient–provider communications as an integral part of delivering social work services to patients. Review this week’s resources and think about how to deliver effective communications within the patient–provider relationship.

Evidence of nonverbal communication
between nurses and older adults: a scoping
review

Abstract
Background: Communication is an integral part of life and of nurse-patient relationships. Effective communication
with patients can improve the quality of care. However, the specific communication needs of older adults can
render communication between them and nurses as less effective with negative outcomes.
Methods: This scoping review aims at describing the type of nonverbal communication used by nurses to
communicate with older adults. It also describes the older adults’ perceptions of nurses’ nonverbal communication
behaviors. It followed (Int J Soc Res 8: 19-32, 2005) framework. Grey literature and 11 databases were systematically
searched for studies published in English and French, using search terms synonymous with nonverbal
communication between nurses and older adults for the period 2000 to 2019.
Results: The search revealed limited published research addressing nonverbal communication between older
adults and nurses. The studies eligible for quality assessment were found to be of high quality. Twenty-two studies
were included and highlighted haptics, kinesics, proxemics, and vocalics as most frequently used by nurses when
communicating with older adults; while studies showed limited use of artefacts and chronemics. There was no
mention of nurses’ use of silence as a nonverbal communication strategy. Additionally, there were both older
adults’ positive and negative responses to nurses’ nonverbal communication behaviors.
Conclusion: Nurses should be self-aware of their nonverbal communication behaviors with older adults as well as the
way in which the meanings of the messages might be misinterpreted. In addition, nurses should identify their own
style of nonverbal communication and understand its modification as necessary in accordance with patient’s needs.

Communication is a multi-dimensional, multi-factorial
phenomenon and a dynamic, complex process, closely re-
lated to the environment in which an individual’s experiences
are shared [1]. Regardless of age, without communication,
people would not be able to make their concerns known or
make sense of what is happening to them [2]. Communica-
tion links each and every person to their environment [3],
and it is an essential aspect of people’s lives [4]. In healthcare
settings, communication is essential in establishing nurse-
patient relationships which contribute to meaningful engage-
ment with patients, and the fulfilment of their care and social
needs [5]. Effective communication is a crucial aspect of
nursing care and nurse-patient relationships [6–8]. In health-

Given the complexity of bio-psycho-social-spiritual influences, people with mental illness should be provided with multifaceted treatment and multi-system intervention. Mental health care teams are therefore expected to achieve interdisciplinary collaboration (IDC) to ensure delivery of safe, high-quality and well coordinated health care. There is increasing evidence to suggest that IDC leads to better patient outcomes. A growing body of research has shown that IDC is more effective than standard care in terms of clinical outcomes such as improved quality of life and alleviated depressed mood in people with mental disorders-with reducing healthcare costs. Despite advances in research, there is still a lack of conceptual clarity of IDC, resulting in inconsistent models of care and inconsistent findings. The ambiguous conceptualization of IDC impedes the standardisation of evidence-based practice and also limits practical applicability and comparability. In order to make decisions about the value of any research study for practice, it is important to understand the general processes involved in analyzing research data. By now, you have examined enough research studies to be aware that there are some common ways that data are reported and summarized in research studies. For example, the sample is often described by numbers of participants and by certain characteristics of those participants that help us determine how representative the sample is of a population. The information about the sample is commonly reported in tables and graphs, making use of frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Information about the variables (or concepts) of interest when quantified are also reported in similar manner.
Although the actual data analysis takes place after data have been collected, from the initial planning of a research study, the researcher needs to have an awareness of the types of questions that can be answered by particular data analysis techniques.

with patients can improve the quality of care. However, the specific communication needs of older adults can
render communication between them and nurses as less effective with negative outcomes.
Methods: This scoping review aims at describing the type of nonverbal communication used by nurses to
communicate with older adults. It also describes the older adults’ perceptions of nurses’ nonverbal communication
behaviors. It followed (Int J Soc Res 8: 19-32, 2005) framework. Grey literature and 11 databases were systematically
searched for studies published in English and French, using search terms synonymous with nonverbal
communication between nurses and older adults for the period 2000 to 2019.
Results: The search revealed limited published research addressing nonverbal communication between older
adults and nurses. The studies eligible for quality assessment were found to be of high quality. Twenty-two studies
were included and highlighted haptics, kinesics, proxemics, and vocalics as most frequently used by nurses when
communicating with older adults; while studies showed limited use of artefacts and chronemics. There was no
mention of nurses’ use of silence as a nonverbal communication strategy. Additionally, there were both older
adults’ positive and negative responses to nurses’ nonverbal communication behaviors.
Conclusion: Nurses should be self-aware of their nonverbal communication behaviors with older adults as well as the
way in which the meanings of the messages might be misinterpreted. In addition, nurses should identify their own
style of nonverbal communication and understand its modification as necessary in accordance with patient’s needs.

Given the complexity of bio-psycho-social-spiritual influences, people with mental illness should be provided with multifaceted treatment and multi-system intervention. Mental health care teams are therefore expected to achieve interdisciplinary collaboration (IDC) to ensure delivery of safe, high-quality and well coordinated health care. There is increasing evidence to suggest that IDC leads to better patient outcomes. A growing body of research has shown that IDC is more effective than standard care in terms of clinical outcomes such as improved quality of life and alleviated depressed mood in people with mental disorders-with reducing healthcare costs. Despite advances in research, there is still a lack of conceptual clarity of IDC, resulting in inconsistent models of care and inconsistent findings. The ambiguous conceptualization of IDC impedes the standardisation of evidence-based practice and also limits practical applicability and comparability. In order to make decisions about the value of any research study for practice, it is important to understand the general processes involved in analyzing research data. By now, you have examined enough research studies to be aware that there are some common ways that data are reported and summarized in research studies. For example, the sample is often described by numbers of participants and by certain characteristics of those participants that help us determine how representative the sample is of a population. The information about the sample is commonly reported in tables and graphs, making use of frequency distributions, measures of central tendency, and dispersion. Information about the variables (or concepts) of interest when quantified are also reported in similar manner.
Although the actual data analysis takes place after data have been collected, from the initial planning of a research study, the researcher needs to have an awareness of the types of questions that can be answered by particular data analysis techniques.

The 12-week psychoeducational support group for survivors of trauma I facilitated consisted of eight women (five of whom identified as Caucasian and three of whom were Hispanic in origin) who had a history of sexual abuse and/or incest. Leslie Hurtado’s passion for working in the media industry as a news anchor was sparked when she realized she wanted to follow her dream and (needs parallel structure here -: “to …”) a call for empathy and a voice for others less fortunate in the community. Her ambitions as a TV news anchor evolved due to her cultural heritage. Explain.
When asked what her zeal was, she replied, “I hate following the crowd because it makes one lose his sense of belonging and start imitating others,.” Leslie remarksshe said. “I am a unique person when surrounded by people who embrace me for who I am and for an unapologetic character.” Nice quote.
Leslie devoted much of her adolescence in learning English. Is she a native Spanish speaker? Wasn’t she born here? This makes it sounds like she may have come as a young child. “I feel great enthusiasm when working with it, whether in a casual or formal setting,.” she said. Studying in the USA particularly helped her gain key language and social skills. She gained ground for attaining a prospective career and a vigorous lifestyle as well.
Leslie's interest in journalism and media was not always present but was initiated by the school, where he was asked to write blogs and short articles on all-rounded relevant topics. “The thrill from writing did not make me feel self-assured or confident at that time,” she said.. Nonetheless, she was well-received, and that was the snowballing of her confidence in the language and creative writing. Ever since her confidence sprang out, Leslie has been regularly writing and posing articles in the school articles as well as a local newspaper, which altogether increased his her valuable experience.
Leslie is of Latino descent. Her grandparents migrated from Portugal to Chicago during the colonial era and war between Spanish and America to avoid violence. Interesting. Leslie's parents were born and raised in Chicago, but they still navigate their ethnic culture. How? Moreover, they regularly visit their ancestral home in Europe and Portugal, where they have roots.
