Responding to austerity…
In response to budget cuts NFRS have reduced the number of
managers by 25% and lowered the number of fire engines from 36
to 32, without closing stations. However, the we are still facing a
budget shortfall of £2.4 million between the years of 2015-2017.

In order to keep up with the pace of change in the digital world, NFRS
needs to be captivated with the advantages and evolution it can
bring. Transformation delivered through disruptive change, emerging
technologies and constant evolution are the status quo now.
Embrace new ways of working
Digital is not only outward focused but is an opportunity to evolve
the internal processes used within NFRS. As an organisation we
must become more knowledgeable around our processes and be
prepared to change them dramatically (and painfully).
Drive the digital mindset
NFRS staff should be digitally literate, creative and collaborative. Our
internal processes should adopt digital best practice. Therefore the
Senior Leadership Team must first embody and then drive this new
mindset throughout the organisation, so that NFRS has a digital core.

So what is Unified Communication?
Unified Communication (or UC) refers to the integration of
communication tools that help people exchange ideas and
do their jobs more effectively. The goal of unified
communications is to integrate telephony (fixed and
mobile), instant messaging, video and email together so the
user has easy access to all tools from any computing device.
So what is NFRS doing?
ICT and risual have been working
since early 2015 to implement
Skype for Business across NFRS.
Our HQ site is now live and the
project intends to have all wholetime
stations live by the end of May 2016.

So what is Unified Collaboration?
The goal of Unified Collaboration is to connect up the
software that provides document management, unified
communications and information productivity to deliver an
efficient information management and collaboration
solution across the entire organisation.
So what is NFRS doing?
ICT and risual have started work on
building a new SharePoint 2013
system in January 2016. The
infrastructure was built within a
month and work has started on
replacing the NFRS website.
The new SharePoint solution should
be live by the end of April 2017.

So what is Connected Workforce?
This will enable the delivery of a flexible working culture
across NFRS that can be characterised as being:
Agile – allow the user to work across multiple devices, with
access to their documents, email, calendars, contacts and
team sites that support them in their role;
Flexible – encouraging and stimulating interaction without
the need for the user to be in the same location;
User centric – focused on ensuring that applications and
data follow the user across devices.
So what is NFRS doing?
ICT are currently working with
various partners to roll out new
software, systems and hardware
such as Office 365, tablets,
smartphones and CFRMIS Ops Intel.
Free calls – all calls within NFRS are internal
using the upgraded Wide Area Network
Phonebook – single person directory across all
connected desk phones, PCs and mobiles
Voicemail – listen to your messages within an
email on your PC or Windows smartphone
Chat – instant text communication
Presence – see when your colleagues are
available using a ‘traffic lights’ display
E-Meetings – reduced travel for meetings
through instant messaging, desktop sharing,
conference calls and video conferencing

Agile Working – Microsoft Surface Pro 3
tablets and Windows 10 smartphones offer
enhanced portability and connectivity
Flexible Working – work from any
location across multiple devices (Desktop,
Laptop, Tablet, Mobile phone), with access to

CFRMIS – will enable
NFRS operational staff to
collect risk data using
Windows 10 Linx tablets
Website – a new and fresh SharePoint website for NFRS
Intranet – a revised intranet delivering News, Blogs and more
Dashboards – a personalised intranet page for all users displaying
information, data and documents that is relevant to them
Efficient Information Management – a ‘single source of truth’ for all
documentation and information used within NFRS
Team Sites – increased collaboration, reduced task and document
duplication and better project working amongst teams and departments
Enterprise Search – find documents and information easily
Work flows – to allow existing (documented) processes to be automated
