This document provides an instructional module that discusses Jose Rizal's annotations to Antonio de Morga's 1609 book "Sucessos de las Islas Filipinas", which describes the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Philippines. Rizal's annotations, published in 1890, aimed to establish a sense of Philippine national identity and consciousness by highlighting pre-Hispanic Filipino culture, civilization, and religion. The annotations disputed Morga's biased portrayal and emphasized that Filipinos had their own culture and identity prior to colonization. They showed Filipinos did not need Spanish "civilization" and could have developed independently without colonization. The module assesses students' understanding of pre-Hispanic

A. REFLECTIVE WRITING.
From the annotations of Rizal, what can you say about the culture, economy, and political aspects
of the Filipino people prior to the coming of the Spaniards? (25 points)
The book Sucessos de las Islas Filipinas narrates the history of wars, intrigues, diplomacy
and evangelization of the Philippines in a somewhat disjointed way. Modern historians including
Rizal have noted that Morga has a definite bias and would often distort facts or even rely on
invention to fits his defense of the Spanish conquest. The importance of Rizal’s annotation is to
create a sense of national consciousness or identity.
Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas is one of the most essential pieces in our history for it holds
every part of the Spanish Colonization era. It’s published in year 1609 by Antonio de Morga – a
high-ranking colonial official in the Philippines from New Spain, Peru. He led the Spanish in that
naval battle against Dutch and wrote the first formal history literary piece about the story of the
Philippines during the conquest by Spanish. The book narrates the history of wars, intrigues,
diplomacy and evangelization of the Philippines.
The said book brought different impressions from different people who have read it. It was
in some way kind of biased due to its part about the evangelization of the Philippines that showed
off distorted facts and sugarcoated lies defending the Spanish conquest. Above all, it impressed Dr.
Jose Rizal that later then annotated the said book in Paris at year 1890, fully printed with nothing
censored or whitewashed. The annotated version implies us various purposes as to how our
National Hero wanted the literary piece to reach us. It helps us be knowledgeable about the
innocence of Filipinos’ glorious past, it also proved that Filipinos are already civilized even before
other countries came to colonize us (specifically Spain) showing the Filipino customs, traditions,
manners, and religion before and during the Spanish conquest, strongly imposing that Filipino
citizens have their own culture, and ways of living even before the Spanish came to colonize the
Philippines.
Jose Rizal strongly emphasized that Filipinos have their own culture, that we have our
own identity that was stained through time as we were being under the Spanish Colonial era. Rizal
implied that it was important to show a testimony from an illustrious Spaniard who colonized our
country, seeing things from their perspective from the beginning of that new era to the last moments
of our ancient nationality. It was also given emphasis on the annotated version about how Filipinos
did not need a new religion or ‘civilization’ from Spaniards for Filipinos could have stood on their
own if it were not because of how the colonization period took chances for our country to grow on
its own.

The sense of patriotism, national consciousness, and identity was what made importance
in this annotation of Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas. Rizal made us aware of the history or what had
happened in the past according to the concepts that correspond to contemporary ideas. annotated
version discussed a more clarified details about the civilization of the Philippines before the Spanish
Colonial Era.
Our identity as Filipinos was unveiled along the annotated version of Rizal. Our National
Hero made sure to be making to clear, reaching out every Filipino’s heart to be well aware that we
have our own personality before we were taken over by everyone who colonized us. We have an
original version of our culture that was later on been stained out of cruelty, greed, and power to
control over other countries. The realities of Filipino civilization were shown in no distorted way as
Rizal wants us to have a clearer view of our real identity. This identity was decimated, exploited,
demoralized, and ruined by during the Spanish Colonial Era.
Knowing one’s identity as a whole gives our nation something to hold on to as one. It
empowers our unity knowing that we were not stained out by any other culture and hold on to the
fact that we were once our own people. Identifying ourselves as Filipinos gives us a freedom to
show off that we are our own country without the need of any help from any other country.
During this modern time, era of GenZ and Millennials, we are still able to empower our
identities even though we ought to stay at home due to quarantine caused by the Pandemic. There
are different social media platforms being used for Webinars, online organizations, or just new
trends promoting real Filipino culture, making us aware of whatever has happened in the past, and
making sure that we don’t forget our identity as Filipino citizens. These kinds of trends are really
helpful for everyone because GenZ and Millennials are more of empowered individuals in the
modern time and holding such knowledge will make our history still grow fonder in the hearts of
every Filipino – so be it youth or the next generations that will pass in time., flourishing the real
identity of being a Filipino spirit in us.
