We gave a workshop at the Digital Media Conference introducing beginner-friendly free software tools to social change activists. The slidedeck includes links for all the software we talked about and specific instructions for using pictures in LibreOffice. Many of the web-based projects on the prism-break.org website are described in detail.
The “right to fork”, a consequence of the “hack on copyright” that is copyleft licensing, helps keep open source and open content project leaders honest. Forking is a political act as much as a version control command, and it used to be that both were a big deal. But now that distributed version control systems (DVCS) have made forking trivial, are there implications for the political act as well? How does political forking work within collaborative prose text projects (i.e. wikis)? English Wikipedia is so large as to be practically unforkable - it essentially has an unassailable monopoly, and unchecked power, in the English language encyclopedia market. One of the core Wikipedia rules is “one topic, one article”, which would seem to prohibit forking, but could we adhere to this principle and still take advantage of DVCS? Can a community be forked while keeping the shared project goals intact?
Audience members will benefit from a grasp of version control, distributed version control and the workings of wikis and Wikipedia.
Presented at the 'Freedom in the Cloud' miniconf, Monday January 24 2011 at linux.conf.au.

A drone, also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as well as many other names, is a device that will fly without the use of a pilot or anyone on board. These ‘aircraft’ can be controlled remotely using a remote control device by someone standing on the ground or by using computers that are on-board. UAV’s in the beginning were typically controlled by someone on the ground but as technology has advanced, more and more aircraft are being made with the aim of being controlled via on-board computers.

Where do non-profit boards come from? Who serves on them and why? More importantly, if you are on a board or you are setting up a board, how do you make sure you get great people who will serve your mission and keep your organization healthy and growing? While there's no one grand plan that fits every organization, there is a large body of knowledge on this topic.
Board members are at their best when they feel supported and have a clear sense of purpose. This talk will go through the different kinds of non-profit boards, long-term strategies for success and some ways to course correct when it feels like things could be better.
Software Licensing and Compliance: It's All About Communityfreedeb
Software licenses seem a little intimidating, but they don't have to be! If free and open source software is a critical part of your business plan, then you owe it to yourself to learn a bit about licensing and compliance. This talk will help you learn about the various categories of licenses and how to make a plan for handling licenses correctly in your own work. Attendees will learn about:
* Free and open source software licenses and where they came from
* Common misconceptions about license compliance
* What resources are available for further learning
If you're just getting started then you probably have questions about who should be at the table for licensing discussions in your company or project, what your responsibilities are and how to approach license compliance work. Background on the communities that wrote the common free and open source licenses and how they use them will help you make better decisions and forge amicable longterm relationships with your upstream communities. The free and open source software community wants you to get this right, so there's a wealth of resources out there for you.
Make it Official: In Praise of Official Programs for Diversity & Inclusionfreedeb
Diversity and inclusion programs with metrics, funding and official support from the top perform better, last longer and are more impactful. Well-articulated goals help projects tout successes, which in turn inspires more participation -- so let's make it official!
Once the hard work of choosing strategies to increase diversity and improve inclusion is done, set aside some budget. It's not fair or sustainable to ask employees to do diversity work "on the side." New hiring protocols, outreach programs and promotion systems take time and training to implement if they're going to succeed. Dedicating resources to inclusion programs creates an environment where it is ok for employees to be transparent about the time and effort they're spending, which is crucial for collecting honest metrics.
Making diversity part of your company or project's success story, demonstrates sincerity and commitment that will help you attract more people that share those goals and will gladly work to achieve them.
Harmonize or Resist: A Survey of Global Strategies for Freedom and Fee Softwarefreedeb
There's a lot of pressure from the US (and some of it's allies) to "harmonize" with American ideas about patents and copyrights. The response by different nations has been wildly different -- some have chosen to play along while others have chosen to resist. What makes sense for one country won't make sense for another and it's all in the details. This talk examines existing legal patterns, the state of local economies and varying trade relationships in an effort to survey what kinds of resistance are possible or effective.
These issues have implications for not only free software activists, but for anyone who is concerned about local sovereignty and freedom of expression. Laws are written for the powerful to help them maintain their power, and resistance is always difficult. But what if we could share not only our code, but our strategies for passing laws, rearranging policy and carving out a safe place for free software and free culture to flourish?
This is a top level survey of the global state of software patents and copyright law. Both local and global policies affect our ability to build things that are needful or locally useful, even when they aren't profitable. Local innovation is our best chance to solve many of our local problems, so let's get to it!
Several different patent clauses are embedded in modern open source licenses and there's some confusion about exactly what they each mean. Most developers would prefer to have nothing to do with patents or patent clauses, but avoiding the topic isn't a smart strategy. None of the popular clauses have been tested in court, so no one can predict exactly how the courts might deal with hybrid copyright and patent licenses.
Outside the courts, the opinion of a particular foundation, industry group or technical community is often much more important than a judge's decision but this important knowledge often isn't well documented. Familiarity with this unwritten knowledge will lead to easier open source integration and smoother participation in the large projects using these licenses. Examples from companies already using these clauses may guide decision-making, but ultimately, every company's situation is different.
That said, savvy open source participants can still make some reasonable assumptions based on the license author's intentions, trends in patent law and the way other common open source licenses have functioned. Understanding the players and the history that lead to patent clauses in open source licenses will help practitioners make informed choices about what licenses to apply to their own work and how these various licenses can help large multi-stakeholder projects.

Patents, Copyrights & Trademarks: Why the Future Might Curse Us (OpenWest)freedeb
Patents, copyrights and trademark rights have been growing and expanding in scope and application. In most cases, it seems the original intent of spurring innovation or protecting creators has gotten a bit lost, if not completely inverted. Certainly, there must be a way to support inventors without enabling predators and protect creators without empowering trolls. We need to slay our own monsters, instead of leaving them for the next generation. If you've ever wondered why a smell can be trademarked or why math can, no... can't, well... maybe gets patented, then this talk is for you.
In the developer community, nobody cares where their collaborators are physically located. Project leaders and company executives need a high level understanding of the complex interplay between patents and copyright, the varying scope of patentability in different regions, as well as the impact of governmental and international bodies seeking to simplify or regulate the international production and use of software. This talk will give the audience a feel for current trends and offer resources for further education on many of the specific issues.
Conflict sucks! The FOSS community is full of passionate people with many, many differing ideas on how to achieve our shared goals. We want the free software movement to keep growing and one facet of successful movement building is embracing a multi-generational community. The good news is that there is no age requirement for using, promoting and contributing to free software. The bad news is that we aren't always doing a great job of facilitating a diverse, inter-generational movement. We'll take a look at what we're currently doing to bring in young people, how we are treating older people in our communities and where there is room for improvement.
Using examples from other movements and inter-generational communities, we'll identify tactics that aren't being used to build the free software community and see what we can collectively port over. We plan to inspire the audience to find ways to recruit and retain young people, inspire older people to participate and maintain an unbroken thread of free software conservatorship. If the long-term success of the free software movement is important to you, then you should come to this talk!
Software Patents After Alice: A Long and Sad Tailfreedeb
The United States Supreme Court's ruling in the landmark Alice vs. CLS Bank case has finally given the lower courts some tools they could use to overturn obvious and vague patents. Many judges have found for the defendant and overturned obvious patents. For entities with the time and money to fight bad patents in court, this is fantastic news. As many as four out of five of the software patents on the books in the US might be found invalid under the new doctrines. For everyone else, this is a mixed bag.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

I'm not affiliated with the prism-break.org website
I don't consider myself free
I consider myself on the road to freedom
prism-break.org is the website that put me on that road and a tremendous resource
the problem is...it is overwhelming: covers 30 categories of software and services
at first, I simply got stuck staring at the page
Corporations and the government can learn a lot about you based on what you search online
This can be used for advertising purposes, which sometimes I'm OK with – if I'm in the market for a new car, perhaps I don't mind seeing ads for new cars
Other times this can be intrusive, e.g. when third-party companies build profiles of you (sometimes inaccurate ones) and sell them to advertisers
Duck Duck Go using the term "bubble" to mean Google, Bing, etc. put you into a bubble and only show you results they think you'll like, e.g. political messages...but sometimes you want to learn about all sides of an issue or simply not be profiled in this manner.
Proxies Google search results
Respects your privacy by not tracking what you search
Imagine if a company kept a database of all your searches forever
And accidentally or purposefully released that database to the public or to the government
DON'T LIKE ABOUT STARTPAGE:
Ads blend in ← Don't like this
LIKE ABOUT IT:
Date range settings on left are convenient
Yahoo search results
Highlights ads better
No date filters, but sort by date option handy
Image search takes you back to Google or Bing
Locking down your browser is probably the easiest thing you can do
These plug-ins were very well together, in a cascading manner
Meaning, what one doesn't catch, the next one does
Scripts from at least 19 different websites blocked for this one webpage
Ads are blocked on the right
User comments didn't render because they required Javascript – may be a good thing
If I let everything pass through NoScript and RequestPolicy add-ons unblocked...
Disconnect catches 69 trackers
Disconnect reports 30% faster load
and 18% less data
The first step to joining Diaspora is to pick a pod
Friendica calls nodes portals
Start by viewing the pod uptime list
I originally wanted to sign up for diasp.org because of its rating and it's in my country. There was a Sign In, but no Sign Up option so I opted for https://pod.geraspora.de. I figured there might be an advantage to a pod outside the US as well.
Once signed up...
There was an option to connect to Facebook so that Diaspora could pull my profile pic and other info as well as allow cross-posting so I followed the prompts and logged into Facebook to allow this.
Diaspora asked me for tags based on my interests. I entered several. Posts with the tags you follow show up in your feed.
Looked for my friends so I could connect with them:
Found 2 out of 13 people (all free software users)
One search field, e.g. no search by last name only
Convinced 3 people to join with me (wife, dad, friend)
Problems: can't move pods (need to recreate user and friends need to reconnect) + pod admin can see everything
Needed help of sys admin to install
Still a "temporary" installation in a Python virtual environment
IRC channel was responsive and helpful
Developer responsive via email
Could not get video plug-in to work
Even though I had the least success with MediaGoblin, it's probably the most inspiring project
A federated alternative to YouTube
Sites like YouTube and Facebook centralize user data and create a single point of failure for an attack or a takedown notice
A federated system like MediaGoblin routes around damage when a node goes out and makes it much more difficult to takedown content because it is distributed throughout the network
Jitsi uses SIP as well as other protocols
Sign up and install were relatively easy
Convinced my Spanish teacher in Guatemala (normally use Skype) and my father to sign up
Both are Windows users and were able to get SIP ostel.co accounts
After about 30 minutes of debugging issues, had a high quality video chat with my Dad who is in NY
Spent 1.5 hours across 2 days trying to get Jitsi to work for me and my Spanish teacher, but never quite got there.
Still hopeful.
Email need to consider both service and client
Currently use Gmail and feel locked in by it
Have had trouble moving to Thunderbird because of overall slowness and unreliability of search
However, use Thunderbird when I want to send or receive an encrypted message with GPG
Tried Sylpheed and looks promising, but not enough experience
I can run my own mail server, but it's a headache, especially with Spam
Signed up for a MyKolab account – calendar, filesharing too, about $10/month/user
Could not get OwnCloud installed in time to report on it, but it looks the most promising to me.
SparkleShare works via git repositories and was relatively easy to setup.
Found synchronization slow, but not enough experience to say for sure.
Sparkleshare: good for file sharing within the context of a project especially when version tracking/history is needed
Not ideal for backing up whole computer or photo libraries because everything gets versioned
Tor is very easy to install
No package to install
Just download binary
I'm not ready to use TOR exclusively, but use it occasionally when paranoia sets in
Best practice is to avoid using external programs to view browser media, e.g. Flash, VLC
Download and then play in a virtual machine without Internet access
Or use a Tors LiveCD such as Liberté Linux or TAILS
I couldn't bypass this warning even when downloading rather than viewing (TOR detects filemanager as Internet-enabled program)
Won't always be the best choice from a technology or user interface or features perspective.
But it's the right choice ethically:
* for ourselves
* for our neighbors
* for our community
* and for those who don't depend on security & privacy as they work on our behalf
