Introduction to the British Romantics
The Romantic Era in British literature lasted from 1780-1830. Writers during this period reacted against aristocratic society and rationalism, instead emphasizing emotions, nature, and common people. Some major literary trends included critiquing or invoking the past, speaking to common people, love of nature, and nationalism. Famous Romantic authors included Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Blake, Mary Shelley, John Keats, Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelley. Three important concepts were the sublime (passion, terror, infinity), beautiful (beauty with imperfections like love), and picturesque (having a painted quality, rough beauty).

ACE Short Answer Strategy
The document provides a strategy for answering single short answer questions on standardized tests in three steps: A) Answer the question, C) Cite evidence from the text using quotations to support the answer, and E) Explain how the evidence supports the answer and the significance or importance of the evidence. Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, and can indicate when, where, how, how often, how long, or degree something occurred.
Daily Grammar - Verbs
A verb expresses an action or state of being. There are transitive verbs that require a direct object and intransitive verbs that do not. Verbs can also describe a state of being by linking the subject to a noun or adjective. Helping verbs are used to form tenses like past or perfect. Tenses like present, past and future indicate when an action occurs. The subject can perform or receive the action of the verb. Mood shows the tone or attitude of a statement. Some verbs can function as other parts of speech by adding suffixes like "-ing" or "-ed".

ACE Short Answer Strategy
- 1. 1 Mastering the ACE technique
- 2. A stands for answer the question. Before we answer the question, we must RESTATE the question that is asked… For example, How did Jackie Robinson demonstrate the trait of perseverance? 2
- 3. To restate the question we use the same words in the question to form a sentence. Example: How did Jackie Robinson demonstrate the trait of perseverance? Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by… 3
- 4. After restating- we must add our answer. Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not quitting the baseball team despite the discrimination he faced. 4
- 5. After we answer the question, we must CITE our answer by finding a DIRECT SENTENCE (quote) from the story to show support. You MUST put quotation marks around your proof because you are borrowing words from the author that are not your own. 5
- 6. Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not quitting the baseball team despite the discrimination he faced. “At every game he had to put up with abuse from the stands; but something inside him would not let him give up.” 6
- 7. Expanding your answer is a SIMPLE and DIRECT ONE sentence conclusion to your answer. Do NOT introduce any new information in your conclusion statement. Do not make your explanation more than one sentence! Keep it simple! Stay on the main topic! 7
- 8. Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not fighting back or quitting the team when faced with racism and discrimination “At every game he had to put up with abuse from the stands. But something inside him would not let him give up.” By not giving up, Jackie Robinson was able to break color barriers and become the first African-American to play in baseball's major leagues. 8
- 9. Write your answer in paragraph form Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not fighting back or quitting the team when faced with racism and discrimination. “At every game he had to put up with abuse from the stands; but something inside him would not let him give up.” By not giving up, Jackie Robinson was able to break color barriers and become the first African- American to play in baseball's major leagues. 9
- 10. There will be one question on your test that will ask one question about BOTH stories, this is called a connecting question. Connecting questions will still use ACE, just in a different way. 10

- 12. Connect the stories in the first sentence. Provide evidence for BOTH texts and explain how the evidence supports the answer. 12
