1. ACE questions: how to respond to

Step 1
Answer the question by rewriting the question…make sure you add your
answer and that it is in a complete sentence! *BANISH THE LETTER “I.” No “I
think,” “I believe,” “I feel,” etc. Use formal language.
Step 2
Cite! Use a quote to back up your answer. You have to prove what you are
talking about by using evidence from the text. Make sure you put quotation
marks around my evidence. Make sure to set up the quote. Make sure the
quote matches your answer. Remember, without text evidence that makes
sense, you will not pass the state exam.
Step 3
Expand/Enlighten/ Enrich/Explain / Extra—You have to answer the “so
what?” What does it mean? Analyze your answer and quote. Show the reader
that you understand the text in a meaningful way. Why should your reader care
what you have just talked about? DO NOT!!!! Just repeat what you’ve already
said. WE CAN READ YOUR QUOTE.
- Be careful that you don’t introduce new ideas. Stick to topic. You only have 10
lines. (Fifteen if you are using regular college-ruled paper.)
