Accessible ePub3 Features

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Celebrate stories of independence our clients have achieved. Cultivate further independence they require in order for them to achieve to goals And ePub3 part of the independence that we are currently exploring to help our clients.
  • #4 It is an Open Electronic Publishing Stand that is built upon the Open Web Standard The main core open Web Standards that is being used for the development of ePub3 is html5 and CSS3. Other popular Open webs standards that are also used in ePub3 is Math Markup language, WAI ARIA, Scalable Vector Grappic SVG and SMIL Syncronised Multimediao Integration Language
  • #5 -equal accessible to publications for all -accessibility universally benefits everyone, not only those with disability Avid technology users gain tremendous benefits in using technology
  • #6 Temporary limitation that someone faces when viewing an ebook or media due to their environment or situation at that time. For example, the need for us to zoom into a section of text on the phone because the text to too small. Without realising we are using assistive technology like zooming software to read the text better.
  • #7 Amy Bookworm – loves to read, expecially books on art and craft. Struggled in school. Reading ability improved when she started using ePub3 books Media over or audio and text synch Hear narration in the background, while text is highlighted. This multi model sensory of seeing and hearing text read aloud has reconnected Amy’s mind to decode more words easier and better
  • #8 Kavitha who also, studies in the same school, often use media overly to learn new languages, like French and Arabic and al read complex books like literature for school. She finds it easier to articulate with the combination of text and sound.
  • #9 Lisa is a Blind user, Enjoying reading on her iPhone, especially ePub3- -cookbooks and short stories. -understands small number of books are recorded in human narration -She uses text to speech engine (conputer generated voice)on her phone called voiceover. - -Lisa is able to use voiceover "on the go" without relying on anyone. -appreciates well structure ePub3 that reads headings and sections of the book to highlight important part of the document. -Lisa also uses headings as nevigation points to jump to different parts of the book. Kavitha, on the other hand uses uses her time to study her ePub3 georgaphy textbook when she takes the train and bus back home. -weakest subject midsem coming up in 3 weeks time. -She get very frustrated having to hold her iPad on a crowded train transiting from train nad bus and waling home from the bustop. Instead she activates voiceover, and listens to the textbook when she encounters these situations
  • #10 -Manu watches isnpirational videos -relies of captions because of his hearing imparment. Manu, Lisa and Kavityha recently downlaoded VisAbility the ePub3 stories of indepence from the VisAbility website. Manu got excited because there is a video in this publcation. Enjoyed wathcing the video due to captions and subtitiles. He was also able to enlarge the video and downlad the video to show his parents.
  • #12 Ali Loves mathematics and this is one of his favorite subjects in school. He aspires to be a math professor when he grows up and is working very hard towards achieve his dream. He would have to constsntly zoom into yje equations in schools to gain better clarify to solve the questions. Sadly, the equations are quite often converted to images like JPEG and they are mostly pixelated and blurry once zoomed in. Ali use to struggle in school and relayed on his teachers and parents to helping him with homeworks.   Now with the introduction of MathMark Language, Ali can easily zoom in without loosing resolution and listen to them using voiceover on his way home.
  • #13 Ali
  • #14 Similarly, the same concept applies to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) for Ali. Previously, ePub JPG or PNG illustration suffer a singnificant loss of quality when zoomed in. However, Ali can now zoom into SVGs, like mathml regardless of the size, which looks smooth and show more details without loosing resolution. Plus, he gets to listen to the description of the image with alternative text.
  • #15 The accessibility features on palyback tools have increased over a number of years. Ali for example who ahs low vision prefers high contrast text in relation to the backgournf. Therefore, he always reads on balck background and white text Alternatinvely Kavitha, also read on white text on black background, whenver she is reading on her dech on a bright sunny day to avoid the glare hitting her ipad screen
  • #20 Enhance semantic markup, in which the publication has a proper narratic and heiry structure using thml5 tags ePub3 supports multiple m=langueages and handles vertical, horizontal and left to right writings. Enhance matedate
  • #21 VisAbility has started embracing ePub3 by converting and adding ePub3 talking books along with DAISY and Braille. Our goal moving forward is to convert all publications into ePub3 once we have streamlined workable process that is robust and efficient.   Some of the work that I have converted so far is our: Accessible Information brochure VisAbility Book of Values and; The Lonely Exhibition Catalogue, for an Accessible Art Exhibiton that is taking place in Fremantle.
