HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM
AND DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS
The four-year high school curriculum offers the Cambridge (CIE) IGCSE examinations forYears 10 and 11, and the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) for Years 12 and 13. Cambridge IGCSE is one of the world’s
most rigorous international qualifications for 14 to 16 year olds, and broadens opportunities for students who
wish to further their education either domestically or internationally. St. Louis School’s core curriculum for IGCSE
candidates includes a First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, one Natural Science and Global
Perspectives (optional for those who wish to study Additional Mathematics). Students also choose several elective
courses ranging from Social Sciences to Creative Arts. Assessment takes place at the end of the course and includes
written coursework, oral and practical assessment, and externally marked exams. The grading system used by
Cambridge for the IGCSE ranges from A* (A+) to G, with A* and A considered outstanding work.
The IB Programme is a challenging college preparatory curriculum, in which students are tested both internally
through coursework and externally through final exams in six core subject areas. Students take three subjects at
higher level (HL) and three subjects at standard level (SL) and must achieve a minimum score of 24 out of 45 points
to graduate. In addition, they must complete a Theory of Knowledge course, 150 hours of Creativity, Action and
Service work (CAS), and a 4000 word research essay on a subject of their choice (Extended Essay), which can earn
the student an additional three points. The IB grading scale is from 1 to 7, with 4 as a passing mark and 6 and 7
representing outstanding work (equivalent to A and A* (A+) respectively).
The Academic Program
St. Louis School follows the British National Curriculum throughout the school years whilst also offering elements
of the Italian National Curriculum for students wishing to take the national exam at the end of Middle School.
