Solar irradiance is the power per unit area received from the sun and is measured in watts per square meter. There are different types of solar irradiance including total solar irradiance, direct normal irradiance, diffuse horizontal irradiance, and global horizontal irradiance. Solar irradiance is used to plan solar power systems and in building design to maximize winter heating and minimize summer cooling through window placement. It is also used in civil engineering models to estimate snowmelt runoff rates.
