Brenda Deyo wrote a paper for her CJA 314 class at the University of Phoenix under Professor Renee Grengs. The paper cites statistics showing that the number of U.S. women killed as a result of domestic violence between 2003-2010 was 11,766, which is higher than the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq during the same period, which was 6,614. - #2 Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior. This is when one person wants gain power in their personal lives. They need to feel that they are the ultimate ruler in the relationship; this will be accomplished by the use of violence. When a man and women are married the conceptions is they can’t be raped by their own husband, this is not true it is entirely possible to be raped by your husband it is something else to prove which is why it often goes unreported. When an abuser is not successful in keeping the woman from leaving it may be stalking that is the offense. The nest few slides will discuss the different types of abuse that woman suffer as well as the children.
- #3 Physical Violence is the most visual type of abuse as it shows in the way of bruises and black eyes. The abuser may use a weapon, but most common is the hands on punching, slapping, pushing, and restraining when she tries to get away are some of them.
- #4 Emotional abuse is done with insults and belittling. They will convince the victim that it is their own fault they are being beaten. They convince them that nobody else would want them. This is how they chip away at the victims self- esteem. The pets are used as a threat, if things don’t go their way they will harm the pet. Psychological abuse is the same way, an attack on a person’s psychological wellness (after a while they sometimes get the Stockholm syndrome) they blame themselves for the situation. Verbal Abuse is the other way they control by humiliating and degrading the person.
- #5 Economic Abuse is another form of control. They make certain that they earn the money and control it. The abuser will pay the bills and withhold money from the victim. They don’t allow them to go to school or work. An abuser will isolate the person they want to control for fear of outside influence, and I say abuser as a person as it could also be a same sex partner, this abuse is not only a heterosexual problem it is also with the gay community.
- #6 When the victim is out of sight of their abuser they are interrogated, this line of questioning will often include the children. The children often get involved in the abuse, they will be questioned and the abuser will be so convinced the victim is lying they will interrogate the children to get them to say something incriminating.
- #7 The battering is a learned behavior. The unintended victims are the children they see the abuse and are so helpless that it makes them angry or depressed and they grow in to adults with major emotional problems. Some will carry on the family tradition and abuse their own family. Some children are aggressive in school and out in public being a bully, some are the opposite and are withdrawn and introverted.
- #8 There are 1,500 shelters for battered women in the United States. There are 3,800 animal shelters. (Schneider, 1990). Women between the ages of 15 to 44 are the major target age of abused partners. All over the world the same is true where violence against women is concerned. Women are usually the target and it is done in the home more than anywhere else. When there is abuse in the home everyone suffers in terms of long-term emotional and physical damage. The fact that there is still so much tolerated and not taken seriously is a real sad statement for this country’s criminal justice system.
- #9 The popular attitude is “well if it is so bad why don’t they just leave” Well, they do leave and look for help in shelters and community programs. However they find that economically they cannot survive. The other thing they face is the justice system where, until it is not law written and executed predominantly by men, then it is just another hurdle for them. These can be overwhelming particularly if the woman has children. Remember she has been beaten down, not allowed to work, and isolated from family and friends, this can just be too much for some to endure and choose to stay behind and take the beatings
- #10 Many times the woman who chooses to defend themselves and fight back end up in prison as the self-defense is argument generally does not hold up in court, it all reverts back to a lack of understanding and not getting why they just didn’t leave. The fact that the abuser is sleeping or not expecting it is when they gain their courage to exact revenge. The reason for this is that they are powerless against them when they are awake and on their game.
- #11 A third of all women's injuries coming into our emergency rooms are no accident. Most are the result of deliberate, premeditated acts of violence. And frequently they occur over and over until the woman is killed. (Dr. Kevin Fullin, American Medical Association, public service ad, Time magazine.) There is a 74% chance if a child is raised with domestic violence they will become an abuser. The percentage of men who abuse that grew up with it is 81%. The assumption is that it is a learned trait and after being raised watching it or actually being a victim as well as their mother then it is likely they too will be abusive. The child is so often a product of their environment. To get behind these women and give them more support is the goal and should be a big priority of criminal justice systems.
