The Role of Festival Mega Events in the
Enhancement of City’s Image: Case study of
Rajahmundry, East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh

ABSTRACT
In the historical city Rajahmundry, Godavari pushkaralu, held once in every 12 years,
going to be celebrated in July 2015. Nearly eight crore pilgrims would participate in
the forthcoming pushkarams as against four crore pilgrims in the 2003. This study is
about the impacts and roles of mega events in the revitalization of the local economies,
creating infrastructure and improving the city’s image. Furthermore it focuses on the
positive and negative aspects, issues, problems, opportunities and achievements
associated with the event. The aim is to predict and analyze how festival event could be
the best used to leverage it as a toll for the development of the city and its
infrastructure in the long term by studying the last 1991 and 2003 pushkarams. The
whole point is about how this event used to deal with the problems facing by the city
like development of new infrastructure, improvement of the transportation system,
effective management of the financial resources and reduction in the time required for
the city’s expected growth.
