Moshoeshoe was the founder of the Basotho Nation. He was born in 1786 in Leribe, Lesotho and was given leadership advice by Mohlomi that helped him build his nation, such as choosing peace over war, marrying wives from different clans, and not killing people accused of witchcraft. Moshoeshoe used strategies like borrowing cattle to his subjects (mafisa), marrying across clans to form marriage alliances, allocating land to subjects (mokobobo), and paying tribute to stronger chiefs to avoid wars. He successfully united many clans under his leadership to establish the Basotho Nation.

 The Basotho Nation was founded by Moshoeshoe

 Basotho are people who speak Sesotho as their first
language.
 They live in both Lesotho and Free State.
 It is the only nation that is built on the bases of
Ubuntu(botho).
 They are a nation that greet each other as a way of
showing love and care amongst themselves.

3. Who was Moshoeshoe?
 He was the son of Mokhachane.
 He was born in about 1786 at Leribe,
Menkhoaneng.
 His birth name is Lepoqo.
 When he was growing up he was named
Tlaputle.
 He was given the name Letlama at the
initiation school.
 He later named himself Moshoeshoe.

4. How did he become a great chief?
 He got advices from Mohlomi.
For example:
 He adviced him to choose peace rather than war.
 He told him to marry many wives from different clans.
 He told him not to kill people accused of witchcraft.
 He observed and learned the skill of leadership in his
father’s court(pitso).
