The abacus is one of the earliest counting devices, believed to have originated in Central Asia. It spread from there to Europe and East Asia between the 12th-13th centuries. An abacus uses a wooden or plastic frame with sliding beads to teach place value and perform calculations through visualization. Using an abacus can improve math skills, concentration, memory, observation skills and mental calculation speed through dual-brain engagement. It remains used as a learning tool in some primary schools.
