SETTING THE SCENE
Olivia is an interactive media designer who was approached by a man named Oscar on LinkedIn. Oscar had seen Olivia’s work and offered to commission her to
assist with designing a lounge area for his proposed home office amalgamation in the mountains. He gave her creative control and welcomed the idea of the
project having a mixed reality approach to enhance the imagination and help him and his wife decide on a design.
summary
Oscar’s original office was located in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Australia. As the area has a high-density of-
fice population, many of his clients worked nearby. To keep things interesting, Oscar would often have meetings in
various alternative locations in Broadbeach. Some days he would meet by the beach for coffees, a restaurant on
Surf Parade, or his partner’s office above Oracle Boulevard. This way of conducting business introduced Oscar to
a broad spectrum of possible working environments. Over the years, Oscar developed a particular taste and learnt
what it was that he would hope to recreate when the time was right.

Oscar’s children have now grown up and left home, so the time has come for
him and his wife to build their dream home. As Oscar and his wife are profes-
sionals, developing and maintaining strong relationships with their clients is an
integral part of business. Due to this, the couple have a strong desire to build a
home that contains a comfortable yet sleek space where they can hold business
meetings, and also just relax.

THE ORACLE’S RESIDENTS LOUNGE
During Oscar’s time in Broadbeach, he had always admired the Residents Lounge in tower one of The Oracle. The Oracle is a luxury two-tower high-rise apartment building that was
developed by Niecon and designed by Design By Innovation (DBI). The Residents Lounge is a large space that is comfortable, quiet and sleek, which made it a brilliant place to conduct
long meetings. Oscar fell in love with the sophisticated colour scheme, clean lines, modern yet welcoming soft furnishings, and warm wood finishes.

MMDE12-250 | ASSIGNMENT #2 | OLIVIA MEREDITH
COMMENCING THE PROJECT
Oscar had been looking around for someone to help him design their home office space, and that’s when he came into contact with Olivia. Oscar had seen Olivia’s LinkedIn profile and
portfolio, and he particularly liked how Olivia was an emerging interactive media designer with knowledge in a broad number of areas.
After initiating contact, back and forth communications began. Olivia was excited by the opportunity to use her eye for design alongside her practical skills, so she bounced some
ideas off Oscar and they made an agreement.
Oscar asked Olivia to provide 2D renders of 3D models (that could eventually go to the architects and builders) that visualized a recreation of the space to suit his needs. Equipped
with images and measurements of the Residents Lounge, Olivia worked towards recreating the space although with some adjustments. In addition to this, Olivia would develop an
immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience, so Oscar and his wife could explore the design as though they were there.

MATERIALS - RATIONALE
the built environment
The material made for use on the built-in wooden wall panels, bookshelfs and cabinets contains vertical grain details similar to those seen in the reference photo-
graphs. A Blinn shader was used to give the surfaces a shiny specular/reflective finish. This high gloss effect makes the space feel bigger as well as projecting a
sense of luxury, both of which are factors that appeal to the client.
The material made for the wooden floor has a very similar purpose and effect, although with a slightly more retro feel. This provides some balance alongside the
ultramodernity of the overall design.
The wall backing the wooden wall elements is covered with a lambert shader in matte black, which creates a sense of depth and a nice backdrop for the statement
wood pieces.
the furniture
The black chairs use a lambert shader to create a matte leather effect whose depth and realism is aided by a bump/normal map. The lounge suite has a matte
lambert shader in a neutral colour which is elegant and versatile. It being very a very texturised material contrasts well against many of the other hard shiny sur-
faces, which aims to help the client/s look more fondly towards the design’s potential as a meeting and relaxing zone.
The legs of the chairs, lounge suites, coffee tables and side tables have all been textured with the Arnold chrome preset that results in a high gloss and reflective
finish. Having a common material across multiple pieces of furniture brings the design together and creates a sense of unity.
The rug’s geometric pattern makes the room pop and the material’s bump/normal map gives the illusion of depth and texture, this creating a more realistic result.
MMDE12-250 | ASSIGNMENT #2 | OLIVIA MEREDITH
LIGHTING STUDY
14
natural - As the immense amount of natural light that floods into the Residents Lounge at
Oracle is one of the client’s favourite parts about the space, it was important for me to closely consider
how I could recreate a similar look and feel for this project.
As two sides of the space are floor to ceiling windows, the scene is filled with light that comes into con-
tact with surfaces rather evenly. The abundance of light results in shadows being soft and subtle. The
sunlight coming in through the windows opposite the wooden wall and shelves can be seen reflecting on
the wooden surfaces. This can be replicated by using a Blinn shader with specularity and reflection on
the surface. The ceiling lights above the wooden panels project a diffused spot light-type shape on the
wall, although due to the sunlight, these lights aren’t seen to reach the floor like they are at night.
artificial - The Residents Lounge at The Oracle is lit at night by multiple white lights in the ceil-
ing (centered panel parallel to the wooden shelves wall) as well as two downlights near the wooden panels
that possess a warmer temperature.
The white ceiling lights cover a broad range of surfaces with their centered brightest point being the
middle of the lounge and touching on the coffee tables, which is then projected in a dissipating circular
shape. The ceiling lights above the wooden panels project a decaying spot light-shape reflection on the
wall, which is significantly less intense about half way down the wall. Despite the noticable decay, a soft
semi-circle of light can be seen on the floor below.
MMDE12-250 | ASSIGNMENT #2 | OLIVIA MEREDITH
LIGHTING THE SCENE
15
Directional lights were considered
to be the most effective light source
to infiltrate the space by coming in
through the windows as natural light
would. As directional lights create a
broad and evenly lit effect, they worked
to achieve this natural lighting with
soft and subtle shadows by having the
glass between the source and scene,
as well as being slightly rotated along
the negative x-axis.
day time
MMDE12-250 | ASSIGNMENT #2 | OLIVIA MEREDITH
LIGHTING THE SCENE
16
night time
The illumination of the wooden walls and shelv-
ing units have been represented by spot lights
with a 4000 colour temperature to recreate the
warmth seen in the reference photographs.
This type of light was chosen for this scenario
because of the way they have a position that
they then emit light from in a cone shape, as
well as for the mood they create.
The central light sources have been replicated
through the use of point lights with a quadrat-
ic decay rate and excluding the use of colour
temperature so they emit a white light.
The space has been designed to use dynamic
smart windows with electrochromic glass that
has the ability to change from transparent to
opaque and dark with the click of a button (trig-
gers a small voltage). This reserves the need
for curtains or blinds and means the client can
reduce reflection (if watching television) and
block out incoming heat if he so desires.

IN CONCLUSION
23
it is with hope that the client, Oscar, is pleased with the designs for his family’s
versatile space in the mountains.
The space has been designed by drawing much inspiration from The Residents Lounge at The Oracle, however the client’s values have been of utmost importance. In order to design a
space that fulfilled Oscar’s dreams, it needed to be spectaclar to match the location, whilst maintaining a balance between being professional, luxurious, comfortable and welcoming.
The curved wall consisting of floor-to-ceiling windows allows for natural light to fill the space during the day, as well as making the most of the location by providing ample views of
the beautiful surrounding mountains and the lake below. This outlook and lighting situation has been designed as an ideal space Oscar to meet with his clients or to relax in style as
he and his wife enjoy what they have achieved in their lives.
With the goal of bringing Oscar’s dreams into actuality, 3D modelling and virtual reality technology were incredibly malleable tools that allowed for ideas and concepts to become
incredibly accurate and realistic visualisations. By offering the client the design in the form of both 2D renders as well as in virtual reality, he was able to get a good feel for what it
would be like if he decided to build these models. The virtual reality in particular would have had a huge impact in terms of actually traversing the space, as being immersed in the
creation with everything to scale communicates the impact of the expansive scenery behind the glass wall, the size of the space, and the feeling the colour scheme instills. It provides
an additional element to the client’s imagination that increases its impact.
