Another visit to HMS Victory
A Look around the ORLOP DECK Located beneath the Lower Gun Deck and therefore below the waterline. Considered a safe area of the Ship. This was where the Doctor set up his ‘aid station’ in times of battle  William Beatty was the Ship’s Surgeon
The more senior Midshipmen lived in an area of the ORLOP Deck known as the After Cockpit. This was in fact the same area that the Doctor used to set up his ‘aid station’ in times of battle………..
Areas of The ORLOP Deck The Purser’s Issue Room The daily rations were collected from here by the ‘cook of the mess’ The Doctor’s Cabin, showing some of his ‘tools of the trade’ .  Note his ‘chamber pot’ you could not expect the Doc to join the rest of the crew in the ‘heads’ way up forward out in the wind and rain….
Areas of The ORLOP Deck “ The Carpenters Walk” Port Walk Looking Fwd Port Walk Looking Aft These enabled the Carpenter’s staff to check the condition of the ships timbers, below the waterline
Located right forward on the Orlop is the Gunners Workshop, with it’s racks of muskets and boxes of Cutlasses. Directly below is the Main Magazine where 35 Tons of Gunpowder was stored William Rivers age 50 was the Victory’s Gunner
The ‘chippie or Carpenter had his cabin and workshop on the Orlop. Mr Bunce, was Victory’s Carpenter. It’s said he was 2 metres tall. Below is the bunk in his cabin
The Boatswain also has his workshop and cabin on the Orlop
The men’s Sea chests’ were stored on the Orlop, Those that were lucky enough to have one were allowed access at certain times of the day. Other personal possessions were kept in Havre’ sacs. Hence the term ‘haversacks’
A small piece of the flag used to cover Nelson’s coffin at his funeral is on display on the Orlop After being shot, Nelson was brought to the Orlop along with the other wounded where he died some 3 hours later His last words were “ Thank God I have done My Duty”
