Presentation delivered at Illinois Valley Community Libraries - Cave Junction branch on April 8, 2015. We are facing a food crisis where every 3 seconds a person dies of hunger, meanwhile 1 in 3 Americans are now Obese, including 6 million children. The solution is simple and growing already! We can plant fruit trees, and forests of food, in civic space to bring communities together and ensure a healthy abundant future. This presentation introduces 5 inspiring stories of the pioneers of the civic fruit movement.

Building Community Is Not a Project, It Is a Process - John Blue.
The AgChat Foundation (AgChat.org ) is focused on empowering farmers and ranchers to connect communities through social media platforms. The process of building and sustaining a community is not a project but a process, one that must evolve and adapt. In this session you will learn what engagement approaches have been tried, why partnerships are key, and how to utilize seasonal themes to support community involvement. You will also learn about specific tools (Like DataSift, ThinkUp, and APIs ) to help discover information of value for the community and how the AgChat Foundation evaluates what to use next.
From the 2014 National eXtension Conference in Sacramento, California.

Charles Dushek on: Why is agriculture important? The concept of 'food security' is fundamentally important, and for that reason, agriculture is important. The task of feeding its people has been perhaps the first priority of its rulers throughout history. As such, agriculture is considered to be the very basis of political and social stability of a nation since times immemorial.

Experiential Education & Narrative Writing: Gateway To User EmpathyJennifer B
The inclusion of experimental narrative writing opportunities throughout an educational program interjects critical thinking and emphasizes the importance of student experiences. Scenarios and simulation based activities were created to help students understand the role of feelings in shaping the human experience in relation to their physical environment. Hands-on activities that create tangible associations with the disabled (or diverse user groups) is the most valuable technique for developing and encouraging positive action. They allow students to filter out personal biases and guide tactical decision making. Research indicates that autobiographical accounts of people create empathy and help students understand the world in different ways rather than relying on preconceived ideas; therefore, reflective narrative writing creates opportunities for students to identify with personas of the populations they research.
The simulation and writing activities were implemented within a junior level interior design course relating to understanding building codes for various user groups in society. Pretests were administered to students related to understanding, empathy, and critical thinking in design as it relates to different user groups. Narrative assignments were integrated and user profiles were created for simulation activities based on the information gathered from pretests. Critical writing rubrics were developed and classroom teaching tools were researched and purchased for simulation activities. Students performed simulation activities, writing assignments, class discussions, and reflections. Post tests were administered and evaluated to assess the success of narrative focused activities. The success of student development tracked through the course and was compared to previous year’s final grades and course evaluations.

Breaking the food-system divide with Smart Food - good for you, the planet an...ICRISAT
For decades the vast majority of investments have flowed to the ‘Big 3’ crops- Wheat, maize and rice. Whether it is R&D, private industry investment, policy support, product development, or even development aid, the Big 3 have received the lion’s share across the globe. This is a problem because it has led to crops being grown in inappropriate agroecologies. This can negatively impact on the natural resources, and increase risk for farmers. It is also well known that globally we need more diversity on-farm, we need more diversity in our diets and more nutritious diets. We have to change peoples’ habits of eating mainly one food such as rice. If we do not change habits then there are not going to be the changes in global diets that are needed, both nutritionally and environmentally and for farmers’ sakes. Therefore we have set up the Smart Food movement.

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed

(May 2015) A Sustainable Foodture is Growing Now!
1. Kristen Reya Steele, Eden Regeneration Alliance
Presentation for Conscious Living Expo, Crescent City, CA - May 16, 2015
2. 3 Things I want to cover in this talk:
• 1. Why am I speaking with you?
• 2. What I think is the single biggest
contributor to all the worlds problems.
• 3. The easy (and obvious) solution that is
already growing a new movement to save the
world.
17. Why are we here?
Food Production Has Evolved to Separate People from Food

We can do it again!
We can rapidly shift the story about food:
28. Introducing ERA
Eden Regeneration Alliance (ERA) shares research,
technology, and resources to support the
transformation from a food system that harms
the health of people and the planet, to one that
brings people and food together creating health
and harmony.
29. “…a revolution could begin.” -
In my opinion, if 100% of the people were farming it would be ideal. If each person were
given one quarter-acre, that is 1 1/4 acres to a family of five, that would be more than
enough land to support the family for the whole year. If natural farming were practiced, a
farmer would also have plenty of time for leisure and social activities within the village
community. I think this is the most direct path toward making this country a happy, pleasant
land.” Masanobu Fukuoka, The One-Straw Revolution
30. Back to our roots, and fruits…
Let us ask what foods promote maximum health and
vitality.
31. It’s waiting for us to grow
A Healthy abundant future is already growing…

• Heal all sickness and disease
• Reforest the world

• Restore our connection to Mother Earth
• Build community
• Restore abundant food sources for all beings

Fruit is falling on sidewalks
In Los Angeles, CA
Senator Cynthia Villar (second from left), environmental activists, health advocates, organic consumers and traders celebrate Philippines' rich and diverse agricultural heritage by forming a food art installation made out of 1,700 kilograms of ecologically produced fruits and vegetables at the Quezon City Memorial Circle on October 18, 2014. The food mandala (Sanskrit word for circle, harmony, balance and unity) also dramatized the call for the agriculture department to promote ecological agriculture instead of risky genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The US Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service estimates that 23.5 million people live in food deserts. More than half of them (13.5 million) are low-income. Approximately 2.3 million people (2.2 percent of all US households) live in low-income, rural areas that are more than 10 miles from a supermarket (USDA).
As part of the war effort, the government rationed foods like sugar, butter, milk, cheese, eggs, coffee, meat and canned goods. Labor and transportation shortages made it hard to harvest and move fruits and vegetables to market. So, the government turned to its citizens and encouraged them to plant "Victory Gardens." They wanted individuals to provide their own fruits and vegetables.Nearly 20 million Americans answered the call. They planted gardens in backyards, empty lots and even city rooftops. Neighbors pooled their resources, planted different kinds of foods and formed cooperatives, all in the name of patriotism.Farm families, of course, had been planting gardens and preserving produce for generations. Now, their urban cousins got into the act. All in the name of patriotism.
