2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

A strange trip
1. A Strange Trip
Billy is a good kid who loves soccer. He and his friend Ted are planning to go to
a soccer camp during the weekend. He goes to his friend’s house to talk about
the camp. He gets to Ted’s house but something is wrong. Ted is in bed next to
his mother. Billy greets, “Hello Mrs. Jennings, hi Ted! What’s the matter? Why
are you in bed?” Ted with very soft voice answered, “I got the flu Billy. I don’t
feel well.” Then, Billy asks, “What do you feel Ted?” Ted is almost asleep but
he answers, “I have a headache. I feel very tired. The muscles of my whole
body hurt. I got a cough, runny nose and chills. I really feel terrible Billy!” Then
Mrs. Jennings says something that shocks Billy, “I don’t know if Ted will go to
the soccer camp.” Billy opens his mouth widely and his disappointment is
evident. But even though he wants to go with his friend to the soccer camp, he
is worried about Ted’s health and he wonders why this is happening to him.
Billy gets home and tells his mother about the disease that Ted has and the
symptoms he is having. He also tells her that Ted may not go to the soccer
camp. The boy asks his mother, “Mom why is Ted feeling bad? What’s wrong
2. with him?” and his mother answers, “Billy there is nothing wrong with him.
Ted got a virus.” Billy tries to understand what his mom just tells him. “A virus?
What is a virus?” He is very confused. He does not know what this thing is
called virus.
The kid goes to bed but he is still thinking about the situation that happened to
his friend. He lies in bed when a light shines in his window. Then, he sees a
flash of light in his bedroom. He cannot believe what he sees. It is an alien. The
figure gets closer to Billy’s bed and he is afraid. The alien says to Billy, “Don’t
be afraid. I am a friend. I’m not going to hurt you. I come to help you understand
what a virus is. I study your human body. Many of my friends investigate all of
the different processes that your human body does. It is very fascinating how
the human body works. I study your body’s diseases and how your body reacts
to them. Do you want me to explain it to you?” Billy is still afraid but he really
wants to understand how this virus made his friend feel so bad. The boy says,
“Okay you can explain it.” The alien tells him that a virus is a microorganism that
transports a disease into the human body. Then, he explains many types of
viruses, the symptoms and how the body reacts. But Billy does not understand
a thing. The alien looks at Billy’s face and asks him, “Do you understand?” and
Billy says, “Not a word.” So the alien thinks of a better way to explain it to Billy.
3. The alien tells Billy that his name is Eok. He is an alien from the planet Quartz.
They are a very technological planet. Eok has a spaceship that can take Billy
inside Ted’s body, in this way he can explain better how a virus can affect a
person’s health. Eok says to Billy, “Do you want to get inside your friend’s body
to see how the flu affects him?” Billy thought for a while then he told him, “If it is
not dangerous I”ll go with you!” Immediately, a spaceship appears in Billy’s
bedroom and they get in it. They go to Ted’s house and get in the bedroom and
Billy asked, “How are we going to get inside his body?” The alien responds,
“Don’t worry my spaceship has the ability to shrink to get into his body. Are you
ready?” Billy said with a worried face, “Ookay let’s gooooo!” And at once the
spaceship shrinks and gets into Ted’s nose.
4. Eok tells Billy, “Look there, they are the flu microorganisms. They are attacking
Ted’s body.” And Billy says, “But how did they get here Eok?” The alien
answers, “Well they are transported in the small drops of saliva and they go
from person to person. Look they are going inside Ted’s pharynx. Let’s follow
them.” Eok and the boy follow the germs and they see that they are attacking
Ted’s throat and nose. Billy whispers to the alien, “I understand why Ted has
cough and runny nose. His body is trying to protect him from the attack of these
germs.” “Yes” says the alien, “the body gives an alarm to the rest of the body
that something is wrong by producing fever, chills and tiredness.”
The alien is explaining Billy how the germs multiply and attack the body when
suddenly many of the microorganisms attack the spaceship and one can get
inside it. The germd tells Eok and Billy, “Get out of this, you are my prisoners.”
The two of them walk out of the spaceship. The germs attach and took them to
the esophagus where all germs are working to produce a sore throat. In there,
they see the leader of the germs that is giving orders of how to attack the
muscles and the head of Ted.
5. The germ says, “Who are you intruders? Are you some other virus? We got
here first! The alien say to the germ, “No, we are exploring this body.” The
leader reacts with anger, “No, you are a new medicine that is trying to destroy
us, but we are going to destroy you first.” Then, the leader tells the germs to
bring their virus syringes to contaminate them. While the germs are looking for
the syringes, Billy can untie his hands and runs into a dark canal; in there he
finds an army of white blood cells that are trying to find the germs. Billy tells
them, “I don’t want to hurt you. I’m escaping from the germs!” “Germs” said the
leader white cell, “We are looking for those germs. They hide very well. Can you
tell us where are they?” “Yes”, said Billy “Follow me.” Billy and the white blood
cells army are going to the esophagus. When they get there the white blood
cells army took by surprised the germs and they fight fiercely. The germs shoot
their contaminated syringes but the white blood cells use their shields. They
could destroy them completely. “Thank you”, said the white blood cells leader,
“We couldn’t destroy the germs without your help.” The alien and Billy says
good-bye to the white cell and he tells them, “Remember to eat plenty of fruits
6. and vegetables to be strong and healthy.”
The alien and Billy get to their spaceship and go out of Ted’s body. Billy is very
happy because he could help the white cells to destroy the flu germs. Eok
congratulates Billy and he tells him that he wants to be his friend. Billy answers,
“Yes, of course I’ll be your friend.” Then, the alien says good-bye. He gets into
his spaceship and goes into the space. Billy is very tired so he goes to sleep.
The next day, he visits Ted’s house and surprise! He is completely recovered
from his flu. He wonders if he really was in Ted’s body with the alien or if it was
a dream. Anyway, Ted is healthy again and they can go to the soccer camp
they wanted to. Ted says to Billy, “Well, let’s plan our camp. You know,
yesterday I had a dream about having somebody inside of my body. How crazy,
isn’t it?” “Yeah! How crazy!” said Billy and they go to play soccer.
