This document presents an architecture called SHINE that orchestrates cloud infrastructure with heterogeneous access and core networks. The goal is to provide cloud services to customers while enabling network function virtualization. The key components are an active remote node that can scale bandwidth between end users and the core network, micro data centers placed in core locations to accelerate content delivery and reduce latency and traffic, and dynamic orchestration of the distributed data centers and network segments. The SHINE architecture aims to provide unprecedented quality of experience while greatly reducing costs by coordinating the network and cloud and facilitating service chaining through network function virtualization.
