This document provides information about a baseline survey conducted in Mutyanatti village in Belgaum, Karnataka by two students for Hindalco Industries Ltd. It includes an introduction to Hindalco, a declaration by the students, a certificate from their research guide, acknowledgements, a table of contents, and lists of diagrams. The purpose of the baseline survey was to collect data on the demographics, socioeconomic conditions, health, education, and basic needs of the village population.

INTRODUCTION
COMPANY PROFILE:
HINDALCO industries Ltd, a flag ship company of the Aditya Birla group, are one of
the leading producers of aluminum and copper. The aluminum units of HINDALCO across
the globe encompass the entire gamut of operation, from bauxite mining, aluminum smelting
to downstream rolling, extrusions, along with power plants and coal mines.
The copper unit, Birla copper producer cathodes, cast copper rods and other by-
products, such as gold silver and DAP (DI-ammonium phosphate) fertilizer.
The units of HINDALCO are ISO 9001; 2000, ISO 14001; 2004 and OHSAS 18001
certified. Several units have gone a step further with an integrated management system
(IMS), combining ISO9001, ISO14001, and OHSAS 18001 into one business excellence
model. The company was accorded the star trading house statues in India. HINDALCO’s
aluminum metal exchange (LME). The copper quality standards are also internationally
recognized and registered on the LME with grade an accreditation.
A nonferrous metal power house to close to global scale, it ranks among India’s top 10
companies in terms of market capital. During FY 2005 HINDALCO recorded a turnover of
RS 9523 corers. HINDALCO in FY 2000 acquired a majority stake in Indian Aluminum
products and a leader in special aluminum from Alcan of Canada.
This was the unit of HINDALCO, which started with the facilities –Alumina plants and
smelter plant. The main products of this unit are alumina power and specified grade alumina.
The alumina plant had a capacity of 1, 60,000 tones of alumina powder year and smelter
plants had a capacity of 73000 tonners of metal per year. Now due to the link in the power
rate the pot lines in the smelter had to be de energized. The subsidiary of smelter plants
carbon paste and block plant is still in operations. Presently the alumina capacity has been
increased to 360kt to 50kt per annum.

The special alumina a small branch of alumina plant manufacturing specialty grade of
hydrate and alumina is being expanded from 25kt to 50kt per annum.
HINDALCO, an Aditya Birla Group Company, has been a part of India’ Alumina
industry for over six decades. In-corporate in 1983, HINDALCO is today vertically
integrated through all stages of the Aluminum business from mining alumina refining power
generation, aluminum smelting, to semi-fabricated products of sheet, foil and extrusion as
well as aluminum scrap recycling.
Creating and adding value to HINDALCO’s nation-wide spread of mines and offices
gives it advantages of being in proximity to various regional markets within and outside the
country. The company enjoys a leading market position in India for special alumina
chemicals and value added products of aluminum sheets, foil and extrusions.

1987: Nathaneal V Davis Alcan Owl for best safety performance.
1996: National award for energy conservation (aluminum sector) from Ministry of
power, Government of India.
2001: National Energy Conservation award for Belgaum. First prize for energy

HINDALCO is a market leader in the aluminum rolled segment. HINDALCO’s sheet
business has its rolling located in Belur (near Calcutta), West Bengal and Taloja (near
Mumbai), Maharashtra. With sate of the art equipment customized product development,

INTRODUCTION:
Research provides answer to questions to a great extent through the application of
scientific procedure. Methodology is a systematic and scientific description of how a study
has been carried out .Its gives clear idea about the research conducted. It is very important
that the investigations be done systematically along a particular line. Methodology is the
blue print of the study. It is very important aspect because a minor error could affect the
entire study. This chapter deals with objectives, research design, universe and sampling
techniques and procedure, methods and tools processing and analysis of data, limitations of
the study and the report.
MEANING:
“A systematic search for an answer to a question or a solution to a problem”
DEFINITION OF RESEARCH DESIGN:
A research design is a method and procedure for acquiring information needed
to solve problem. A research design is a nothing but the basic plan that helps in
data collectionor analysis, it specifies the type of information to be collected, the
source and data collectionprocedure. A goodresearchdesignwill ensure that the
data collected relevant to the objectives to be achieved.
2.1 OBJECTIVES:
To study the personal profile of respondentlike age, religion, culture & housing status.
To known there economic background, what are the sources of income and what are
the other sources that helped them for economic development.
To know about the health care centre, distance, facilities available, cleanness, service
provided at the time of emergence and are there sufficient doctors available within the
centre.
To know the education status of the people, to know the reason for illiteracy, facilities
available at the school and number of dropout within the Muttyannatti village.

To know about the social problems like child marriage, child labour and anti- social
activities.
To know about the basic needs like water, shelter, food, bank & post office.

RESEARCH DESIGN:
The research design involves the entire process of planning and carrying out a research
study. By research study it means the plan procedures for data collection and analysis that
are undertaken to evaluate a particular theoretical perspective.
TOOLS OF DATA COLLECTION:
The investigator used a questionnaire method for the survey of 35 respondents. The
questionnaire method is structured in such a way as to obtain relevant information related to
the objectives. It had both open ended.
UNIVERSE OF THE STUDY:
The universe selected for the study comprised company of “ATHANI SUGAR’s LTD,
NAVALIHAL.
SAMPLE:
In the 35 selection of respondents the investigator used stratified random sampling method
to conduct the research. There are around three hundred and fifty, employees in the
organization. There are around thirteen departments & we selected three sampling in each
department. This is the method we used for sampling because it was to easy to analyze.
DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETION:
Data were collected, classified, edited and coded with the help of the code book. They
were transferred to the master sheet, the data was processed manually. The raw data were
converted into percentage and presented in the form of tables and charts.

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation and data obtained from 40
respondents. After classifying the responses obtained, the coded data were transferred to the
excel-sheet, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted.
The purpose of analysis is to arrange tabulated data and interpret the observation in
Such a manner that gives answers to research questions. The main objectives of the study are
as follows:

Diagram 3.1.3 shows that majority of the members are in the group of 4-6 of about 48%, in
the group of 6-8 of about 39% & in the group of 2-4 of about 13%.According to the survey
conducted by us the data, says that majority of families are following the culture of joint
family, also we can see that slowly people are realizing the importance of family planning.
Due to this awareness, we can see some of the nuclear families.

of 45-55 years, 9 respondents are between the age group of 35-45years, 6 respondents are

Diagram3.1.5 shows that 80% of the respondents are living in Pakka house in spite of their
economic status are low. The reason for this may be there are involved in anti-social
activities or may be they had agricultural land before that made them economically strong.
We can also see that remaining 20% are living in kachcha house due to un-employment &
low income.

this is the people are not having agriculture land to be self employed, 10% of the respondents
are government employees the reason for this the people are educated. There are aware about
the education, 7% respondents are Agriculturist because there are interested in agriculture.

Remaining 3% are un-employed because there are illiterate & some people are in search of

3.2 ECONOMIC BACKGROUND
3.2.1 RATION CARD

Diagram 3.2.1 shows that 88% of respondents are having BPL card, its surprising that in
spite of having good housing condition the people are having BPL card the reason may be
there are involve in anti-social activities & the government is unaware of their economic
status. Remaining 3% of people are having APL card because there are employed in
government, 3% Antodaya & 6% without ration card because they had done certain mistake
while filling the application form.
3.2.2 NEED OF TRAINING IN THE VILLAGE

need of vocational training,15% of respondents need of self-help programme training & 10%
respondents need of other training. According to the people there is a need of other trainings

like candle making, agarbhatti making, various arts like painting, drawing; hair style making
etc. By providing training it may help them to improve their economic status & to help them
stand on their own feet.
3.2.3COMMUNITY LEVEL

Diagram 3.2.3 above diagram shows that there are around 26 groups but previously they
where around 41 groups the reason for reduction of the groups is no proper facilities &
communication gap. There are around 3 youth groups but, previously they where around 5
groups, the reason for reduction may be lack of knowledge about the facility available and
there are only 5 farmers in the village because there is no agricultural land, according to us
there is a need to start SHG &Youth group which helps will people to start small business.
3.3 HEALTH
3.3.1 COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS FACED BY THE VILLAGE

Diagram 3.3.1 shows that 65% of people are suffering from fever, 60% of people are
suffering from chicken gunya, 50% of people are suffering from cold & 40%of people are
suffering from malaria. The reason for the health problems is unhygienic food, dirty
environment, polluted water & lack of knowledge about the diseases. The best way to cure
the health problems is proper treatment, awareness about symptoms, clean environment,

drinking boiled or filtered water. According to us there is need to provide awareness among
people by conducting camp about health.
3.3.2 DISABLED WITHIN THE VILLAGE

Diagram 3.3.2 shows that 90 male are physically disable and 10 female are physically
disable according to the respondents. This disable people have been getting pensions,
scholarship & reservation of government seats in schools, colleges and government jobs.
3.3.3 AWARENESS OF THE DISEASES

Diagram 3.3.3 shows that 85% of people are aware about the diseases and 15% people are
not aware about the diseases. The reason for awareness is because the health care centre has
conducted awareness programmes like awareness about HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Mal-nutrition &
family planning.

Diagram 3.3.4 shows that 70% people are commonly going for treatment to Muttyannatti,
60% people are commonly going for treatment to Belgaum & 18% people are commonly
going for treatment to Kakati. The reason why people go to Belgaum and Kakkti for
treatment is there is no availability of proper treatment & medicine within village.
3.4 EDUCATION
3.4.1 EDUCATION STATUS IN THE VILLAGE

secondaryeducation, 10% have pursed U.G and 0% P.G. The reason why most of the people
have pursed primary & secondary education because there are unaware about the importance

of education, another reason may be the environment within the village. As all the people
belong to ST caste they have scholarship to pursue education, but people are not utilizing the
benefits.
3.4.2 REASONSFOR ILLITERACY

according to are observation people are not interested in studies, so they give reason that
there are economically poor.

sincerely, wont be on time, wont teach properly nor the teacher nor the people are bothered
about the education of the children.
3.4.4 SITUATION OF DROUPOUT IN THE VILLAGE

reason for this is some children are orphan or parents are carelessness towards child
education.

Diagram3.5.1 shows that number of widow are around 210, number of divorce are 26,
number of child labour 2 & child marriage 0. According to our observation the reason for

habits. The reason for divorce is the partner being cheated by each other, communication
gap, misunderstanding or torture by family members to the women. We can see that people
are aware about child marriage & child labour.

Diagram 3.6.1 shows that 90% of power supply in the village, 50% road is
damaged, 20% people have constructed toilets in their home and 80% of people are not
having toilets. There is only 10% of drinking water and people are facing problems has there
is no adequate supply of water, roads. There is no post-office, bank and sewage facility.
According to us there is a need to provide facilities like drinking water, transport facilities,
post-office so that people have to not travel long distance for this needs.

MAJOR FINDING, SUGGESTION AND CONCLUSION
MAJOR FINDING:
Majority of respondents are having own house, among this most of the
having pakka house and few having kachcha house. We observed that in
spite of their economic condition is week & majority of the people being
illiterate their housing condition is good.
Majority of the people are working as casual labour in industries because
of illiteracy & few are un-employee as there education status is to week.
We also observed that majority of people are BPL card holders, in spite
of their housing condition being good, few are APL & Antodaya card
holders as there are working as government employees and few of them
are without ration card.
When it comes to health situation, people are aware about diseases like
HIV/AIDS, Cancer, & its precautions .We could also see that some of
the people have been suffering form common diseases like chicken
gunya, fever, cholera, cold and malaria.
Majority of the people have pursed primary education, few secondary
education .The reason why people have not pursed higher education is
lack of money, lack of knowledge about the importance of education or
lack of interest in education.

We also visited school there we could find the negligence of teachers
towards teaching, towards student and towards their duty.
Majority of the people are unaware about education & parents are
negligibly towards education of children.
We could also observe that majority of people are aware about child
marriage, child labour.
We could also observe majority of divorce cases & most of window
within the village.
The major reason we could find for divorce are communication gap,
cheated by partner, misunderstanding & torture by family members.
We could find there was a need of basic facilities like drinking water,
proper road, post-office, bank, and toilets.

SUGGESTIONS:
To conduct awareness programme about family planning and birth
control.
Improve the economic status of the people by giving them job in private
and government sector.
To start SHG's this can help for economic growth, development & for
the welfare of people.
To create awareness about education to the youngsters & awareness
about schemes available to them.
The health care centre is not providing good treatment to the people. So
the company should provide medical facilities.
To conduct awareness programme about diseases like chicken guniya,
cholera, dengue, malaria and its symptoms.
To conduct awareness programme to the pregnant women about mal-
nutrition, child nutrition and reason for child mortality.
To conduct a lecturer to the youngster, what is the importance of
education in their life.
To conduct night schools for the middle age people.
To conduct Rally (JATA) on education in the village.
To conduct awareness programme to the people about the girl child
education through drama, puppet show, dance etc.

CONCLUSION:
Hindalco Industries LTD,is providing various facilities to the near by
villages like drinking water ,vocational training to the women , job to the people
and scholarship to the children of employees .It has also started health care
centers in village Yamanpur. It is benefiting the people of 3 villages Yamanpur,
B.K.Kangralli & Gounwad.
It is helping the poor and needy people. It is also providing various facilities
to the villages Muttyanntti & Kanbargi. Before starting village survey there is
need to prepare a proper format, so that survey becomes easy , while conducting
a survey there is need to understand the problems of people & then do the
analyze on the problems.
According to us there is need to create awareness about education to the
youngsters & about the benefits available to them by government. To keep the
surrounding clean. According to what we observed there are too many problems
and the company should try to provide the facilities to the people.
