INTRODUCTION
 Social responsibility is a moral obligation on a company or an
individual to take decisions on action that is on favour and useful
to society.
 It is also known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
 CSR is being seen as the source of new competition edge for the
banking sector of Bangladesh. Almost all the banks in Bangladesh
are doing CSR from their own perspective and capacity.
IMPORTANCE 0F CSR IN BANKING
 CSR builds customer trust with banks .
 It provides positive customer outreach.
 Consumers activity appreciate CSR
initiatives.
 A positive boost to employee productivity
and engagement.
 Community CSR programs drive real value.
AREA OF CSR ACTIVITIES
 Health Sector
 Education Sector
 Poverty Alleviation
 Charity Activities
 Cultural Enrichment
 Youth Development
 Women Empowerment
 Sports
 Contribution in different construction sector such as school,
 Madrasha , Mosques.
HOW CSR IS ACHIEVED
Csr as a concept must be integrated in to the bank's DNA. CSR should be
practiced from the start.
 A good corporate governance (transparent accounting, oversight Over business
practices, regular auditing of the bank's procedures and processes) is the most
important step towards keeping employees, shareholders happy and hence the 1st
step towards practicing CSR.
HOW CSR IS ACHIEVED (CONTD.)
 A bank has to follow the
'pyramid of corporate social
responsibility' defined by Archie
Caroll in 1991. The pyramid
include Economic, legal, ethical
and philanthropic responsibility.
THE PRACTICE OF CSR IN BANGLADESH BANKING
SECTORS
1) Dutch Bangla Bank: Famous for the social campaign on acid violence, dowry, pregnancy. Issues of
mother etc.
2) Islami bank Bangladesh: Contributes in different social activities through “Islamic Bank Foundation”.
3) Pubali Bank Limited: Focus initiatives on health care, sports, education and youth development, the
arts and charitable activities. Donated Tk 25,00,000 to the victims of Nimtoli Tragedy.
4) United Commercial Bank: Providing financial support to underprivileged children, donating to reduce
health hazards and less fuel consumption over 30 years.
5) Rupali Bank Limited: National development through ethical, legal and commercial conduct.
THE PRACTICE OF CSR IN OTHER COUNTRIES
 United States Of America: Interest of major stakeholder’s group and community interest.
 United Kingdom: Four main aspects - Environment, Society, Marketplace and Workplace.
 Japan: Three way satisfaction - seller, buyer & society
 Russia: CSR activities to help children, public health and environmental protection.
 China: Community outreach, environmental health and safety (EHS), and environmental protection.
 Australia: According to stakeholder group, dimension or themes.
Banks’ CSR Activities In COVID Situation
EBL & BRAC Ltd.
Provided masks, healthcare support and
vaccination assistance.
Contributed 1 crore 60 lac as financial aid to
fight against coronavirus pandemic.
Standard Chartered Bank Ltd.
Announced Tk 13.5 crore strategic COVID-19
response action plan that supports healthcare and
immediate assistance, regenerate livelihood and
catalyze long-term growth.
National Bank Ltd.
Arranged COVID-19 test for the employees
posted in the Dhaka division.
Overall CSR
Banks’ CSR spending in health sector up 200%.
Spent almost Tk 238 crore in health sector from
January to June in comparison of last year
increase Tk 160 crore .
CONCLUSION
As a socially responsible corporate institution, the function of banks should not be limited to dealing with
financial & economic challenges. Rather, every bank should be socially responsible to adopt policies that
promote the well-being of society and the environment while lessening negative impacts on them. Banks
should take social responsibility as an ethical framework to ensure a bank’s active compliance with the
spirit of the law, ethical standards, and national or international norms. In the long run, Practicing these
social responsibilities will benefits society & build a positive image of the bank as well.
