A. Objectives: The art historical canon privileges the Western perspective and is incomplete. Most of what we study in this chapter is based on Western art (Europe and North America). Browse through the partner museums and select one that has a "Museum View" or "Street View"
(typically if you scroll to the bottom, it will appear above the map).
It is important to make sure your selected museum has a
"Museum View"
or
"Street View"
of inside the galleries of the museum - not all do. Please confirm this before moving to step two. For example, the National Museum of Art in Washington DC doesn’t have a Museum View so you can’t pick it but MoMA or the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum does!
Please also make sure to pick an art museum, as you’ll need to write about a work of art. So, sadly, no history museums like the Anne Frank House, NASA, or Smithsonian National History Museum.
STEP 2: Select a work of art from your museum within the Museum/Street View or collections page.
You’ll want to pick a work here so that you can analyze where it’s located, what’s next to it and what kind of frame it has. It will look like this or if you found it by looking through that museum’s collection, it will look like the second image.
STEP 3: When you’ve found your artwork, click on the entry to learn more about your individual artwork. Spend some time clicking around the room it's in, seeing what’s next to it and what the architecture of the space is like.

Sources
: you need at least two sources (cannot include Wikipedia) and to include Works Cited that is correctly formatted in MLA style.
You should also use in-text citations when referring to information that is taken from your sources. This lets the reader know what are your ideas and words vs. those that are from someone else.
You’ll include citations if you paraphrase, directly quote, or refer to information and concepts that come from other people.
Remember that what you list in your Works Cited page are sources that you actually cite in your report. This is not a bibliography so it's not sources that you used for research.
The artwork alone and by itself is not considered a source. If there was an essay that accompanied it, then yes, you can list that as one of your sources.

Writing about Art
Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of
both works in relation to a particular element or a well thought-out combination of

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be
to define and evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your
intellect and perception, arouse interest and convey meaning. In most cases, then, you
will be translating the visual (what you see, or observe) into language (what you write).
In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—your observations.
This means that your description will incorporate a large portion of your essay. Remember
to be attentive to the vocabulary of the discipline of Art. I f you do not know what a word means, better not to use it.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the artwork you have chosen.
Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to make that
point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of
essays in the Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an
organized format and structure, clear and coherent paragraphs, and a command of
grammar and style.
Comparison and Contrast
In many beginning Art History courses, and in more advanced ones as well, you
will be asked to write a paper in which you make a comparison and contrast between two
works of art. This type of essay usually requires a substantial comparative judgment of the two works, which will function as your thesis statement.
One option for a thesis statement for this kind of comparative essay could be based on how you see the two works in relation to each other and to some aspect of the human condition, or culture, or history. It could be, for example, that both artists painted peasants working in a field, but one painting suggests the oneness of humans and nature, perhaps because the figures appear to be an integral part of the field in which they are working, while the other painting emphasizes the separation between humans and nature. The evidence you provide for your thesis will include your interpretation, analysis, and description of the characteristics of both works, and must at all times relate to your thesis. For example, if you are discussing horizontality or verticality, you need to first accurately and clearly describe these elements in both works and then evaluate how these visual orientations demonstrate the validity of your thesis concerning humans as a part of nature or separate from it.
Unless the assignment specifies a work-by-work approach, it is usually best that
you do not divide the paper into two discrete sections: a discussion of one work of art
followed by a discussion of the other. Instead, each paragraph can include discussion of

providing an essay with its judgmental focus.
Perhaps, though, in writing about art you might want to offer a well thought-out central idea rather
than an overtly argumentative statement. For example, “African art was a major influence on the work of
Pablo Picasso” states a well-documented and widely shared opinion that is interesting but uncontroversial.
Of course, a paper on this topic would have to fully elaborate on that relationship and offer examples of it.
The difference between an idea and a thesis statement is in their degree of contention. The above
example of a central idea could be debatable, but mainly the disagreement would arise if the writer does not
adequately explain and illustrate the idea through detailed description, intelligent criticism, and analysis,
and not because of the idea itself.
However, in a thesis statement—such as, “Picasso’s treatment of women in his art mirrors the
distorted vision he had of women in general”—it is more obvious that readers will either strongly disagree or
agree, by the very nature of the claim itself. Moreover, even if the writer advances a stimulating argument
with impressive evidence in defense of the thesis, because the claim is so contentious, a reader may still
disagree.

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.

work of art. Provide notated research (inquiry) to further interpret the background of the artist and the

This theoretical orientation can be organized as a continuum from theoretical constructs that are independent and concrete as with the Behavioral/ CBT theories, to theoretical constructs that are interdependent and abstract as with the Psychodynamic theories (Fatehi, Gordon & Florida, N.D.). Family systems and Humanistic/Existential are theoretical midpoints (Fatehi, Gordon & Florida, N.D.). Trait theory tends to focus on the premise that we are born with traits or characteristics that make us unique and explain our behaviors (Cervone& Pervin, 2019). For example, introversion, extroversion, shyness, agreeableness, kindness, etc. all these innate characteristics that we are born help to explain why we behave in a certain manner according to the situations we face, (Cervone& Pervin, 2019). Psychoanalytic perspective on the other hand focuses on childhood experiences and the unconscious mind which plays a role in our personality development, (Cervone& Pervin, 2019).
According to Freud, (Cervone& Pervin, 2019) our unconscious mind includes all our hidden desires and conflicts which form the root cause of our mental health issues or maladaptive behaviors. The main difference between these two perspectives is that trait theory helps to explain why we behave in a certain manner, whereas psychoanalytic theory only describes the personality and predicting behavior and not really explaining why we behave the way we do. There is no such evident similarity between the two perspectives, but kind of rely on underlying mechanisms to explain personality. Also, there is some degree of subjectivity present in both the perspectives. Trait theories involve subjectivity regarding interpretations of which can be considered as important traits that explain our behaviors, and psychoanalytic theory is subjective and vague in the concepts been used like the unconscious mind. My opinions accord with the visible contrasts between the two, one focused on internal features describing our behaviors in clearer words, whilst other concentrating on unconscious mind in anticipating behavior which is ambiguous and harder to grasp.

Art is a provocative medium, and your challenge in writing about art may often be to define and
evaluate the artist’s choices and techniques, which, according to your intellect and perception, arouse interest
and convey meaning. In most cases you will be translating the visual (what you see) into language (what you
write). In order to do this, you will have to be extremely attentive to the characteristics of the work—which
means that description will incorporate a portion of your essay—and be attentive to the vocabulary of the
discipline of Art.
You must also be able to develop a thesis statement with a detailed analysis and argument about the
artwork you have chosen. Therefore, you must consider what it is you want to say, and use description to
make that point. In many ways, writing an Art History essay is similar to writing other types of essays in the
Humanities. It requires a clear and focused topic, an arguable thesis, an organized format and structure, clear
and coherent paragraphs, and a command of grammar and style.
Thesis Statement
Most academic essays seek to persuade readers to understand a specific issue in a specific way—the
writer’s way. The writer’s thesis statement offers this substantial but concise assertion of her/his
understanding (usually in one to two sentences in the introduction or near the beginning of the essay), thereby
providing an essay with its judgmental focus.
Perhaps, though, in writing about art you might want to offer a well thought-out central idea rather
than an overtly argumentative statement. For example, “African art was a major influence on the work of
Pablo Picasso” states a well-documented and widely shared opinion that is interesting but uncontroversial.
Of course, a paper on this topic would have to fully elaborate on that relationship and offer examples of it.
The difference between an idea and a thesis statement is in their degree of contention. The above
example of a central idea could be debatable, but mainly the disagreement would arise if the writer does not
adequately explain and illustrate the idea through detailed description, intelligent criticism, and analysis,
and not because of the idea itself.
However, in a thesis statement—such as, “Picasso’s treatment of women in his art mirrors the
distorted vision he had of women in general”—it is more obvious that readers will either strongly disagree or
agree, by the very nature of the claim itself. Moreover, even if the writer advances a stimulating argument
with impressive evidence in defense of the thesis, because the claim is so contentious, a reader may still
disagree.

A good research paper often includes evidence from both primary and secondary sources. Whether you are
using primary or secondary sources, remember to explain and analyze the passages that you have chosen from
the texts (or elements you have chosen from the works), and what th.

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.

· Color – analyzing color is to identify the different hues (red, blue, green, etc.) Also what particular range of colors (primary colors, secondary colors, etc.)
· Line – distinguish if the work emphasizes line and linear contours. Does it emphasize the play of light and dark? Is it a strong line and continuous, or broken up into many small hatches or pieces?
· Space and Mass – does the work indicate whether the image conveys a sense of three-dimensional space? Mass – describes the space created by the work. Does the work convey a sense of substantial form – as if it has weight or volume?
· Scale - does the work hold a consistent scale? Are different scales used to emphasize or deemphasize certain elements in the image?
· Composition – describe how the artist placed all of the above elements together in the work. You can start by asking yourself some questions. Ex. What first attracts your attention? How does the artist emphasize the features? What does the artist emphasize visually? How can you describe the idea or emotion evoked by this work?

be interested in writing about in the mode of art criticism, including how the artwork relates to a
topic or theory we have covered in class, and using at least two sources (at least one of which should

According to Freud, (Cervone& Pervin, 2019) our unconscious mind includes all our hidden desires and conflicts which form the root cause of our mental health issues or maladaptive behaviors. The main difference between these two perspectives is that trait theory helps to explain why we behave in a certain manner, whereas psychoanalytic theory only describes the personality and predicting behavior and not really explaining why we behave the way we do. There is no such evident similarity between the two perspectives, but kind of rely on underlying mechanisms to explain personality. Also, there is some degree of subjectivity present in both the perspectives. Trait theories involve subjectivity regarding interpretations of which can be considered as important traits that explain our behaviors, and psychoanalytic theory is subjective and vague in the concepts been used like the unconscious mind. My opinions accord with the visible contrasts between the two, one focused on internal features describing our behaviors in clearer words, whilst other concentrating on unconscious mind in anticipating behavior which is ambiguous and harder to grasp.

A significant issue addressed by the study is the nursing “staffs’ perspective towards indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) and evaluation of changes in their perspectives towards indwelling urinary catheter (IUC) use after implementation of a 1-year quality improvement project” (Niederhauser et al, 2019). the process of the research was conducted in “seven acute care hospitals in Switzerland” (Niederhauser et al, 2019). With a “sample size of 1579 staff members participated in the baseline survey and 1527 participated in the follow-up survey. The survey captures all nursing and medical staff members working at the participating hospitals at the time of survey distribution, using a multimodal intervention bundle, consisting of an evidence-based indication list, daily re-evaluation of ongoing catheter needs, and staff training were implemented over the course of 9 months” (Niederhauser et al, 2019).
Determining the strengths and weaknesses
A great strength of the study is a large sample size of over 1000 and the use of well-constructed and easy-to-read heading for better understanding. Also, the use of figures, graphs, and tables make the article less cumbersome to read. Another strength is the implementation of the ethical principles of research by enabling informed consent and voluntary participation as well as confidentiality and anonymity of information.
On the other hand, the study has several weaknesses such as the use of “the theory of planned behavior to model intentions to reduce catheter use, but it is not possible to know if changes observed in staff perception led to a true change in practice” (Niederhauser et al, 2019). Another weakness of the study is the repeated survey design which allows assessment of changes in staff perspectives after implementation of a quality improvement intervention but the sustainability of the effects over time could not be evaluated.

In this experiment, examining the equivalence point in a titration with NaOH identified an
unknown diprotic acid. The molar mass of the unknown was found to be 100.78 g/mol with pKa
values of 2.6 and 6.6. The closest diprotic acid to this molar mass is malonic acid with a percent
error of 3.48%.
Introduction:
The purpose of the experiment was to determine the identity of an unknown diprotic acid. The
equivalence and half-equivalence points on the titration curve give important information, which
can then be used to calculate the molecular weight of the acid. The equivalence point is the
moment when there is an equal amount of acid and NaOH. Knowing the concentration and
volume of added NaOH at that moment, the amount of moles of NaOH can be determined. The
amount of moles of NaOH is then equivalent to the amount of acid present. Dividing the original
mass of the acid by the moles present gave the molar mass of the acid.
In this particular titration, there were two equivalence points as the acid is diprotic.
Consequently, the titration curve had two inflection points. The acid dissociated in a two-step
process with the net reaction being:
H2X + 2 NaOH Na2X + 2 H2O
This was important to take into consideration when calculating the molar mass of the diprotic
acid. If the first equivalence point was to be used, the ratio of acid to NaOH was 1:1. If the
second equivalence point was used in the calculations, the ratio became 1:2 as now a second
set of NaOH molecules reacted with the acid to dissociate the second hydrogen ion. The
titration curve also showed the pKa values of the acid. This happened at the half-equivalence
point where half of the acid was dissociated to its conjugate base (again, because of the diprotic
properties of the acid, this happens twice on the curve). The Henderson Hasselbalch equation
pH = pKa+log(A-/HA)
shows that at the half-equivalence point, the pKa value equaled the pH and was visually
represented by the flattest part of the graphs.
Discussion:
The titration graph showed that the data was consistent with the methodology and proved to be
an precise execution of the procedure and followed the expected shape. One possible source of
error was the actual mass of the acid solid. While transferring the dust from the weigh boat to
the solution, some remained in the weigh boat this could have altered the molar mass
calculations and shifted the final the final mass lighter than actual.
The Vernier pH method was definitely a much more concrete method of interpreting the results.
It was possible to see which addition of NaOH gave the greatest increase in pH ( greatest 1st
derivative of the titration graph). The relying solely on the indicator color would make it very
difficult to judge at which precise point the color shifted most, as the shift was a lot more gradual
compared to the precise numbers. This may have been a more reliable method if there was a

Here at the beginning of the semester I want to say something to you about academic integrity.[2]
I’m deeply convinced that integrity is an essential part of any true educational experience, integrity on
my part as a faculty member and integrity on your part as a student.
To take an easy example, would you want to be operated on by a doctor who cheated his way through
medical school? Or would you feel comfortable on a bridge designed by an engineer who cheated her
way through engineering school. Would you trust your tax return to an accountant who copied his
exam answers from his neighbor?
Those are easy examples, but what difference does it make if you as a student or I as a faculty member
violate the principles of academic integrity in a political science course, especially if it’s not in your
major?
For me, the answer is that integrity is important in this course precisely because integrity is important in
all areas of life. If we don’t have integrity in the small things, if we find it possible to justify plagiarism or
cheating or shoddy work in things that don’t seem important, how will we resist doing the same in areas
that really do matter, in areas where money might be at stake, or the possibility of advancement, or our
esteem in the eyes of others?
Personal integrity is not a quality we’re born to naturally. It’s a quality of character we need to nurture,
and this requires practice in both meanings of that word (as in practice the piano and practice a
profession). We can only be a person of integrity if we practice it every day.
What does that involve for each of us in this course? Let’s find out by going through each stage in the
course. As you’ll see, academic integrity basically requires the same things of you as a student as it
requires of me as a teacher.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the White House and a coalition of leading research groups have prepared the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset (CORD-19). CORD-19 is a resource of over 44,000 scholarly articles, including over 29,000 with full text, about COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, and related corona viruses. This freely available dataset is provided to the global research community to apply recent advances in natural language processing and other AI techniques to generate new insights in support of the ongoing fight against this infectious disease. There is a growing urgency for these approaches because of the rapid acceleration in new coronavirus literature, making it difficult for the medical research community to keep up.
Call to Action
We are issuing a call to action to the world's artificial intelligence experts to develop text and data mining tools that can help the medical community develop answers to high priority scientific questions. The CORD-19 dataset represents the most extensive machine-readable coronavirus literature collection available for data mining to date. This allows the worldwide AI research community the opportunity to apply text and data mining approaches to find answers to questions within, and connect insights across, this content in support of the ongoing COVID-19 response efforts worldwide. The rapid progress of VoIP over traditional services is
led to a situation that is common to many innovations

different than the public circuit-switched telephone net-

Switch Telephone Network (PSTN), dial up, local loops

constructed in various ways by using both proprietary

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. It tends to leave out artists and voices from other regions we've studied (Middle- east, Africa, South America, Oceania, Asia, Australia, and indigenous, non-white, non-CIS-gender populations). Our task - find an artist which fills in that gap. How-to: Choose a w ork from a time period covered in class this week, but from a region we didn’t discuss or didn't discuss enough (see above) Not sure how to find a work we haven’t discussed together? Along with the work you make, please include a brief explanation telling us how it is a response to the reading and discussion material. As a disclaimer, there is a good chance this option will take a little longer- but you may also find it quite interesting and rewarding. So what could you make? You could draw a replica of a work you see in the chapter - just spending time "recreating" a work helps us become more aware of composition, value, line, etc - all the choices the artist made. You could make an altered version of a work you see in the chapter - consider how the two new versions of Magritte's pipe (on page 9) add to and change the meaning. This is great because you can be really flexible about the materials you have around the house. You could generate your own work, based not on an example pictured in the chapter - but based on an idea from the text. Maybe there is a concept you want to reflect upon visually. Or a question based on the reading that you could try to communicate via a work of visual art.
