Making Connections: Biliteracy Instruction for Spanish-Speaking English Langu...guest9a5e58
In this presentation, we describe a pilot that provided Spanish literacy instruction one day per week for sixteen weeks to a group of fourth grade Spanish-speaking English language learners enrolled in an English-only instructional environment. The curriculum was not pre-set. Rather, instructional decisions were made based on knowing the students, their backgrounds, and affect toward literacy in English and in Spanish. However, all instruction was guided by 3 main tenets: a) Culturally responsive instruction; b) rich vocabulary instruction; and c) cross-linguistic awareness. Descriptions of the nature of instruction are provided.
Process Design: Re-evaluating Public School Locker ConceptBPMTina
Teaching and reinforcing efficient use of time for high school students may have more to do with ease of access to study materials than anything else. Here is a process for re-evaluating the public school locker concept; one that has not changed since the 1950's.

Whore 1: You will suffer dearly for your sinsRichard Porter
He pushed her against the wall of the dilapidated, deserted building that was destined to be razed for another renewal zone in New York City at the beginning of the 20th century. The new electric streetlights softly lit up her face. She was young thin and frightened. Her body was so small that from a distance, she looked like she might be alittle child, but upon closer inspection, the curves of her tiny frame convinced him that she might be 15 or 18.
1. A Forest Fight
By Alexa Villatoro
“The Ewulf hunting forest is closed, 3 bears are currently loose.
Although there is barely possibility they will come out of the forest…” The news
man’s voice boomed from the television.
“My goodness!” Nick announced. He was a 12 year old schoolboy, who only
cared about television. He was a brunette with two pimples on his cheek. He was
also skinnier than a stick. He stared at the TV hard trying to see the news man’s
tie. “Blue hearts with a stain, never heard of it” Nick concluded. Nick started to
clink his bowl loud enough so that he could not be able to hear his parents
arguing. He couldn’t stand it anymore so he left the cereal bowl untouched and
walked to school.
As he walked down hill to school he drank a soda in one hand and in
the other, threw a rock. He was so mad at his parents. He thought about if they
divorced, died, or even leave him abandoned?
“Oops!” nick yelled. He accidently bumped himself with another kid as he
walked into the school doors.
“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to...” sputtered the other child. His name was Billy.
He was tall and skinny. He had brown eyes and blond hair. He seemed really nice
to nick.
“I know, it’s ok” Nick smiled at him. They started talking about their parents.
Both of their parents argued a lot. They came up with something that would
change their lives forever. And it would happen in just a period of time.
2. * * *
“Ring, Ring, Ring!!!” screamed the lunch bell. Billy and Nick looked at
each other and ran out of the class room, each taking their backpacks. They met
in the bathroom. The bathroom was a totally icky to Nick. They both knew their
last meal was breakfast. They both sneaked through the halls of the big school.
Through the music room, lunchroom, classrooms, and out the main doors. They
ran and ran and ran. Not even knowing each other they would live and survive,
together.
Billy and Nick rapidly found a tree big enough for shelter. They had
spotted 2 bears already. One was still loose though. The bears spotted the two
friends and didn’t hurt them. This was their first day in the forest, and nick was
already frightened.

On the sunniest day ever of September. The plants of the forest
awoke, and the sweet smell of flowers came in through Nick’s nose. Billy and him
were in the close by river when, suddenly Billy spotted a bear running towards
them. “Watch out!” yelled Billy.
“Yikes!” nick screamed. He started running after Billy.
“Zip!” a gunshot of Anastasia hit the bear’s shoulder.
“Roar!!” it roared.
Nick and Billy were trying to hide but they wanted to watch the
police put the bear in the truck. So they did. Then, the police looked straight at
them. They were caught. They both walked into the car, like the police wanted
them to. The policeman started driving. “Stop!” nick announced. He opened the
door and ran to a house, his house. He swung the door open and looked back.
Waved good bye to his best friend and gave his mother the biggest hug ever.

3. HIS mom and dad were going to divorce, well they did. Nick felt more
comfortable now. He would still see them both and, they would not argue
anymore. He was happy. He still worried about Billy though. He would see him
tomorrow at school then. And from that day on he never ran away again.
