WHAT IS COMPUTER SCIENCE?
• Computer Science is the study of the
theory of computation and/or the design
of computers.
• Pursuing a degree in computer science
involves learning how to develop
computer programs using different
programming languages and learning
how to manipulate algorithms.
COURSE PATHWAY
1. YEAR: First year is the year that the principles of
computer science are introduced. The foundations of
problem solving and mathematics are built.
2. YEAR: Second year’s modules aim to build up on the
previous year. Data structures and algorithms are studied.
Modules include digital systems, operating systems,
databases and information systems.
3. YEAR: Third year is where students choose the major that
they want to focus on. They can either continue computer
science or they can study computer science with data
science regarding their career preferences. Modules in this
year focus on the applications of programming such as OOP
(Object Oriented Programming), Artificial Intelligence, Big
Data Programming, Computer, Networks and Internet
Systems.
4. YEAR: The students have a choice to continue their
studies or do an internship for the fourth year. If the student
wish to continue his/her studies, he/she can learn more
about the computer science field such as Machine Learning,
Ethical Hacking, Cloud Computing, App Development.
BRANCHES OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
Computer Science’s major 2 branches are:
1.Theoretical CS: involves studies such as
Theory of Computation, Information and
Coding Theory, Algorithms and Data
Structures, Programming Language Theory,
Formal Methods, Concurrent, Parallel and
Distributed Systems, Databases and
Information Retrieval.
2. Applied CS: involves studies such as
Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning,
Computer Architecture and Engineering,
Computer Graphics and Visualization,
Computer Security and Cryptography and
Software Engineering.
WHY COMPUTER SCIENCE?
I have always been intrested in maths and
solving problems. I knew that I wanted to
pursue a degree in either science or
engineering, but I did not know which field I
was more interested in. After learning more
about the applications of artificial intelligence
and machine learning, I became more
interested to the course and wanted to
contribute to the new technologies. Although
pursuing a degree in computer science takes a
lot of hardwork, I am certain that I will enjoy
each and every moment of the journey.
